Re: [WISPA] RIP Vivato

2005-12-19 Thread Tom DeReggi

Sky Pilot has a pretty cool design. Its a much more
usable product now that they have enhanced it to operate at faster
rates. It originally was limited to about 6 mbps agreegate, but now it
supports faster speeds, I think closer to 14-20 mbps, but don't quote me on
it.  The only big problem I see with SkyPilot is that it is limited to
Vertical polarity only, to take advantage of it Phased Array antenna design.
However, even with high power rules, limiting it to Verticle pol, meant it would
not survive our harsh competitive spectrum environment.  I generally can
get full 6 sectors out of Horizontal, and I'm licky to get 1 or two usable
channels out of verticle in my markets. So we never continued our beta test.
Thats what makes Trango so valueable, we don't have to guess in advance or limit
ourselves to the polarity.

If you have a rural environment where Verticle pol
is likely usable and would likely stay that way, SkyPilot is definately worth
considering, otherwise stay clear of it.

From what I know, SkyPilot is in good financial
condition, but then again what do I know, I never knew Vivato had a
problem.

getting through this process.  I guess that most likely, some big

Vivatos own fault, based on their poor decission to over value their
product and try and get $10,000 for a wifi AP, in a world full of tough
competitors.  The technology very well may survive based on
intellectual property that likely will get bought for a fraction of

it becomes an example that incourages investors in our wireless space to

don't use Vivato, so it does not directly effect me, but indirectly when
