If you want it pre-installed, Asus says that's coming later this quarter
(it's already available in Japan). Or if you're a clever fellow, it's
apparently not too hard to install XP on the units now. (At least that's
what Google says...) Hardware compatiblity isn't a problem, and reports
indicate that the battery life doesn't even change very much.

It's not gonna be a speed demon, but neither is Linux on these units.
There's only so much you can do with the small, low-power hardware they're
built from. If you want small(ish), light, AND high-power, the Macbook Air
is just over there at about five times the price. :P

versions. Not sure how quick/stable they'd be if you needed Win tho.

Get a Panasonic toughbook, seen a video on youtube of them driving cars
over them and even trying to blow one up with dynamite.

They've gotten mutch cheaper over the past 6 months since they released
the new Dual Core mobile's. I bought a used CF-29 with Centrino for
around $700 on ebay and it looks mint, 6 hour battery and daylight
readable screens. I take it up on 150' towers when I line up 3 foot
dishes. Just carabiner the carry handle to my harness and go.

If you were thinking "some assembly required," the One Laptop Per Child
was about that price, and probably insanely rugged for our use. However,

the hardware specs were pretty low, and they're no longer for sale. And
you'd have to fiddle with 'em to install a usable OS (for our purposes,
the kid-friendly environment they ship with doesn't count).

I'm somewhat disappointed they haven't made a more serious effort to
commercialize the OLPC gear, as selling a few of them for a profit would

be an obvious way to fund the distribution of OLPCs to the impoverished
markets they're ultimately trying to reach.

You may also be thinking of the Asus EEE (eeepc.asus.com). It's
pocket-sized, with built-in Ethernet and wi-fi and can be persuaded to
run Windows XP, but I'd hate to have to type on that teensy keyboard. I
still want one, even though the last thing I need is another gadget to
collect dust next to my Nokia 770 Internet Tablet...

Or maybe you're just thinking of "cheap notebooks" and not something
specifically for WISP-use. Right now, a bottom-of-the-line, minimal
features Dell Vostro 1000 is available for $399. It's no speed demon but

would work well enough for most basic use, I imagine.

I used to have a Fujitsu Lifebook, it ran win2k and had a eth port and
a touch screen. The screen was half height resolution (512x768 iirc).
