Cisco 2700 AP

2014-03-31 Thread Andy Page
Has anyone noticed that Cisco has announced their latest AC access point?

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/aironet-2700-series-access-point/datasheet-c78-730593.html

Built-in Wave 1 AC, two gig ports, supposedly the same cost as the 2600.

Cisco says the 2700 will be the same price as the 2600, which is about
$375 less than a 3700, and obviously doesn’t count the cost of the Wave 2

We are able to put APs in rooms if we wanted, but opted to put them in hallways
to limit the amount we would need to deploy, as well as making replacements
easier. We will occasionally put an access point in a room if we have to, but
it not typically necessary.

We have been lucky so far, students don't mess with the access points. In the
last 5 years, I can only think of one instance of a stolen access point, and
none have been destroyed.

We have had some issues with APs in hallways, especially 5Ghz coverage. If
you use a managed RF coverage (we have Aruba), the hallway APs tend to
lower their power (because of the strong neighboring signals), causing some
issues on the fringes of the rooms.

The Cisco 702W looks very promising for our dorm rooms that are very limited
due to legacy infrastructure and I can't wait to try these out. Anyone know an
approximate cost on those yet? Even though Cisco recommends you mount most AP's
horizontally, I have mounted many vertical about 8 feet high onto drywall with
wire mold in dorm rooms and just use a small keyed alike master lock to secure
it. I haven't noticed any negative impact on vertical vs. horizontal yet, but
95% of ours are mounted horizontally.

I've been doing the same thing with our Ruckus units. It should work with
anything that uses twist-clips for mounting on a ceiling grid. The ones I get
are 1/2 wide, so the clips slide on but are very snug. The local hardware
store has them in white and black, which has been fine for the few locations
I've needed them, though it would cost to much more to spray paint them the
necessary color. Plus they are several times cheaper than what the vendors are
pointing me to.

Subject: Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Disabling 802.11b speeds

Sorry to drum up an old thread, but I am contemplating disabling 802.11b. We
have not had any users on 'b' in the last 6 months and are confident about
turning it off. One question I do have for those of you that use Cisco
controllers, is how are you turning 'b' off? I talked to a network consultant
and they said to go into each WLAN and set the Radio Policy option to
802.11a/g Only and that would take care of it. It looks like most in this
thread change the data rates to disabled under Wireless 802.11b/g/n
Network. I am curious to know which method is better and what your settings
look like. We are running code line 7.0 but will be upgrading to 7.2 soon if
that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Alan

We're at the point that we have to turn off the lower connection rates on our

results from the changes. We have disabled 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps in some of
our buildings with great success, but some might argue to just eliminate 1 2
Mbps rates. Also, I'd be interested to hear from schools that have not disabled
these rates and why not.

Prime Infrastructure 1.3

All,

Just a heads-up, Prime Infrastructure 1.3 was released today. This is the
version that supports the 7.4 controller code.

From what I understand, it will work with 1.2, you just won't be able to use
the new features from 7.4.

Indeed, 7.4 was just released, but it requires NCS/PI 1.3, which is not yet
available:

WLC Version 7.4.100.0 will need Prime Infrastructure Version 1.3 to be
managed, Version 1.3 is not yet available to download at this point of time

So we wait...

Not sure if anyone noticed this, but Prime Infrastructure 1.2 was released
yesterday. Looking at the options for download, and a patch must be installed
if upgrading from NCS 1.1.x to Prime Infrastructure 1.2. Is it possible that
there isn’t going to be a NCS 1.2, and this is now what we are supposed to use?

TAC mentioned today that NCS 1.2 was comming out any day (they had the release
notes) and that Cisco Works LMS was being rolled in. Sounds messy. I'm thinking
WCS may be the way to go for the wireless management if that train is going to
be maintained. Any thoughts?

I also see that if using NCS, 1.2 is required (if using NCS) which does not
appear to be available yet.

As well as VM WLCs , it looks like a new huge controller on the block , the

It has some interesting new features like true HA, support for the 2600 series

restored.

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Cisco WLC 7.3 Posted

2012-08-31 Thread Andy Page
Ok, some more supporting documentation to my theory. In the release notes of
WLC 7.3, you will find this…

“The 7.3.101.0 controller software release is not compatible with Cisco Prime
Network Control System (NCS) 1.1.1.24. Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 is
required to support the new features in controllers introduced in the 7.3.101.0
controller software release. Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 is the subsequent
version of Cisco Prime Network Control System (NCS) 1.1.1.24.”

Maybe this is common knowledge to everyone already, but I was expecting a NCS
1.2, which two of our Sales Engineers told me was coming out Today, when in
fact it appears there will not be one. Pretty confusing… but I’m glad I didn’t
upgrade before finding out that it requires WLC 7.3 be installed first, that
could have been bad.

WCS to NCS migration trouble

2012-02-23 Thread Andy Page
Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone else had trouble with WCS to NCS migration...

We just bought Cisco NCS, managed to get it installed (virtual appliance, fwiw)
and seems to work well in the short amount of time I've played with it. We
wanted to import everything from WCS, so I followed the instructions on
upgrading it to a version that allowed for exporting (7.0.230.0), which
produced wcs.zip. On the NCS server (1.1.0.58), we were unable to get it to
connect via ftp to our ftp server to grab the zip, but sftp seemed to work (the
'show rep repname' command worked, where it wouldn't with ftp).

Anyhow, I ran the 'ncs migrate wcs-data wcs.zip rep ncs-ftp-repo' command and
only received the below output...

Initiating WCS 7x DB restore . Please wait...
INFO: no staging url defined, using local space.rval:2

Is this normal? Should I see a status somewhere? I've let the thing go for
hours with nothing else showing up on the screen. Ctrl-C sends me back to exec
mode where I can start ncs again, but after logging into NCS, I see no new data
(controllers, mse, etc).

If you went the WCS to NCS migration route, how was your experience?

Thanks,

Mine ran for 10hrs, and then it was just done. They seem to have left out any
type of progress meter for this as well as when you apply an update to NCS. I
did work with TAC on an issue during an upgrade and they did a rootkit and
where able to run a ps aux from cli to watch the process. He joked that this
was the progress meter. I have put in for a feature request to get some kind
of status bar added for this issue.
