Re: configuration script
Hello, I am actually working for a British university, but a colleague pointed out this discussion to me. I hope you don't mind me posting to your list. As it happens, i have been developing a wireless automatic configuration tool ready for our new academic year in September. It works on much the same principles as the c++ script mentioned previously. The tool i have written will configure Windows XP (SP3 or SP2 with KB update) and Vista clients using the native WLAN API. The tool is currently only in beta, but i am releasing it under a GPL licence so anyone can contribute to it or hack it apart if they wish. It can be found at: https://sourceforge.net/projects/su1x/ It comprises of two parts at the moment: 1. A profile capture tool that you run on a manually configured computer to capture the wireless profile to a xml file. 2. A setup tool that then does all the checks etc and imports the captured profile on a non setup computer. I have written it with easy site customisation in mind, so if you don't want to mess with code you only need to edit the config.ini to change the text and images. Its written in autoit and also takes care of IE/Firefox proxy settings and will work for any SSID. It probably has some bugs etc so i would appreciate any feedback or contributions, and i will add them to the project. Would be good if we could combine our efforts to save duplicating effort. Thanks, Gareth Ayres. Re: configuration script
Here at Williams we wrote an in-house solution based on the Native WiFi API (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms706556(VS. 85).aspx) that is doing the job well so far. If anybody wants to see the source code, feel free to email me and I'l happily share it. The nice thing about this solution is that it deletes saved credentials and sets up the 802.1X network for the user. Also, since it's based on Microsoft's provided API, it's likely to continue working for a while. It works on XP SP2 with the Wireless LAN API up. RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] configuration script
For what it's worth, we did write our own as well in the early stages of what turned out to be a pretty painless 802.1x rollout. We did find that despite having a mostly effective script to pass out, the Xpress Connect service (ID Engines at that time) was more complete, and addressed the moving target aspects of supporting a wide variety of Macs and various Windows flavors than we could without spending significantly more time on ongoing refinements. Personally, I'm still of partial mind (hold your snickers)that teaching people how to do the handful of steps required to configure a supplicant has a lot of merit, as opposed to automating it. The one big gain- many wireless utilities are more robust than the weenie version that is native to Windows. If people understand the handful of basic parameters needed, they can populate their preferred utility/supplicant and off they go. But for automating the process, you are locked into the Windows native client/supplicant. But then again, I'm not on the helpdesk, either:) -Lee Lee H.
