So while installing / uninstalling Qt on this windows machine to troubleshoot
the German Language(tm) issue, I ended up with having the installation
directory different from what I had set in QT5_BASE_DIR and as such cmake
didn't find everything and didn't build the wireshark-qt.exe.

All fine now.

> as per Table 8 "Reason for discard parameter values" from ISO-8473

Or as per Table 9 "Reason for discard parameter values" from X.233, a publicly
accessible resource.

After some digging it becomes clear the iso-options dissector writer tried to
be smart by highlighting the error position in the packet as well as presenting
the error. He forgot however that the data for presentation would be retrieved
from the highlighted position, which is wrong, hence this bug.

Obvious choice would be to feed dissect_option_rfd() with field=0, but the
other users of these functions have to be checked how these expect this to
work.

Surprising that no bug was created to track this issue, it has been known for a
year and two months ago Guy also noticed it:
https://www.wireshark.org/lists/wireshark-dev/201608/msg00064.html

I have been ignoring the gregex test for a while now, it is probably a good
idea to disable the whole test.

Looks like same old https://bugs.wireshark.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=11221,
but was on 1.12

Steps to reproduce:
* Right-click "Edit Resolved Name" on an IP -> "MySevervmispelled"
* Save pcapng
* You're screwed, no way to modify it, or clear this custom name

Ideal would be also to retrieve the existing value when you click a 2nd time on
"Edit Resolved Name" and see again "MySevervmispelled" in the "Name:" form.

This settings are not save... NSIS installer only check if there is already
shortcut...
It is possible there is a bug when upgrade for Legacy...

There is a new installer (with msi) planned for 2.4, may look for save this
settings...

[Wireshark-bugs] [Bug 12990] Remember previous desktop icon and quick launch selections during upgrade on Windows

2016-10-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.wireshark.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=12990

(In reply to Alexis La Goutte from comment #4)
> Ok.. it is (normally) working if you don't uninstalled Wireshark...
> Can you try ?

Sure. Frankly I didn't even think that skipping the uninstall was optional,
but I do see the option to decline uninstallation when the Wireshark installer
prompts for it.

The 1.10.0 to 1.10.1 upgrade still didn't get the defaults right, even when
skipping the uninstallation. The Quick Launch Icon state /did/ reflect my
previous choice, but the Desktop Icon state did not, even though I could
clearly see the previous Wireshark icon still on my desktop. But issues with
1.10.x aren't really the focus here; I'm just saying what I observed from the
same environment tested earlier.

Using a clean Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 machine and installing
"Wireshark-win64-2.0.6.exe" as the initial version, I chose to create a Desktop
Icon for the v2 Wireshark, to not create a Quick Launch Icon for the v2
Wireshark, and to create only the Start Menu Item for the Legacy Wireshark.

During subsequent upgrade to "Wireshark-win64-2.2.1.exe" -- if I decline to
uninstall the previous version -- then the default selections for the v2
Wireshark icon options appear to be correct. But the Legacy Wireshark options
are not correct, and appear to want to do "exactly what we're doing for v2
Wireshark" rather than remembering the previous selections. I have to
de-select the unwanted Legacy Wireshark icon options again before proceeding.

Thanks for pointing out the "do not uninstall" path, since that wasn't a path I
had been observing or testing. But it appears there are issues both WITH and
WITHOUT uninstalling the previous Wireshark version, which prevent the
installer from remembering the current/previous installation icon choices.

I think that helps underscore the specific enhancement suggestion that was
made: "Requesting that the desktop icon creation, quick launch icon creation,
file extension association and all other selections on this installer screen be
made part of the user configuration information that is saved when upgrading
from one Wireshark version to another."

As such -- if these selections were part of the user configuration files being
retained even during uninstallation -- the defaults would be correct during the
subsequent install, regardless of whether the user opted to uninstall the
current version like Wireshark prompted them to or not.

[Wireshark-bugs] [Bug 12989] Check for Updates requires manually exiting Wireshark and asks redundant questions.

2016-10-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.wireshark.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=12989

(In reply to Guy Harris from comment #1)
> So this bug should probably focus on the "automatically shut down and save
> work when updating" part; the full state saving should be done separately.

Makes sense. The reference to "I don't know if there is already Windows
Restart Manager behavior supported in Wireshark builds on Windows" was just
intended to make sure the enhancement leveraged any such support if it was
already present, and not that "save state during restart" was a critical or
required part of the enhancement. Just desirable.

I see now that "Windows Restart Manager" was the wrong technology to have cited
though, and is actually what an installer would use for managing the /request/
to restart specific services or applications.

What I was thinking of was the "Application Recovery and Restart", and the
example in "Registering for Application Restart". This is what should provide
the opportunity for an application to save and restore its state when something
like Windows Update restarts the machine in the middle of the night, etc.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc948909(v=vs.85).aspx
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb525423(v=vs.85).aspx

Agree that if this or some other "save and restore the open application state"
functionality does not already exist in the Windows build of Wireshark,
introducing such functionality would be an entirely different enhancement.

Its only if that functionality already exists that it should be leveraged by
the current enhancement request.

> It is, however, Windows-specific.

Agreed.

(In reply to Alexis La Goutte from comment #2)
> It is strange because work before... (need to retry with last 2.2.x) you
> don't use msi packages ?

When I have downloaded the installation set "manually" for use on upgrading
multiple machines, I download the .EXE installer. (I don't even see where
there is an .MSI installer option? Not even decompressing the .EXE shows me an
.MSI, so maybe I'm missing the point of what the .MSI question is.)

More typically though, I'm just using the upgrade offer or upgrade option that
Wireshark itself offers. So the installer I'm using is "whatever Wireshark
chose to download", and I have no idea that it's specifically .EXE or .MSI.

I don't recall a time when this behavior worked, but it very well might have
worked in the past. I tested just now on a clean Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 US
English machine and installed "Wireshark-win64-1.10.0.exe" as the initial
version. During installation I changed the selection to NOT create a Quick
Launch icon and to DO create a Desktop Icon.

After successful installation of Wireshark and WinPCAP I rebooted, and then ran
the "Wireshark-win64-1.10.1.exe" to upgrade. The uninstall of 1.10.0 prompted
to "Default (keep personal settings)", which is what I let it do. During the
subsequent 1.10.1 install, the icon offer did not remember my previous
selections, and I had to again de-select Quick Launch icon and select Desktop
icon.

So the issue is there at least as far back as 1.10.1, and happens to pre-date
the integration of the "Wireshark v2 vs. Wireshark Legacy"-related concurrent
installation and icon options.

Bug 12945 happened on any platform using CMake for building, which includes
Windows.
Now that Wireshark 2.2.1 is out, I guess it's worth checking the behavior (as
it includes the fix for bug 12945).
I was not able to make my Windows Wireshark crash with the attached pcap file.
If it still crashes, it would be interesting to capture the packets with tshark
/ dumpcap (assuming that they do not crash) so that we can try to replicate it.
