Re: [WiX-users] Creating multiple Minor Updates

2013-11-12 Thread Blair Murri
It is anticipated that most products will not need to reference anything
because they wish to update all changes, and the default if you don't specify
anything in your filter is to include all changes.

If you need to filter your changes to only include some of them, then you
reference items and all changes in the self-same fragments are included while
all changes in unreferenced fragments are ignored. That is not the expected use
case for most products.

If you do a repair and need to know the current list of installed applications
you interface with, you can't using the Upgrade table. It is never parsed
during maintenance installs.

Re: [WiX-users] Create .wixmsp

2013-11-12 Thread horana
I will post verbose log shortly.

Do we have to mentioned changed files, binaries in the patch.wxs file

I thought Candle, Torch processes will figure out changed files? Please
let me know how it really works

If we need to mention changed binaries it is difficult, in some cases it may
be running into 100s.

I am more confused now.

Do we have to mention changed binaries (.dlls, .ocxs, .exes) in component

Please someone help here, how to do perfect patch??

I followed steps in Wix 3.5 tutorial, without luck..

Any help would be appreciated.

[WiX-users] Deployment Tools Foundation: ApplyPatch Method

2013-11-12 Thread Jeff Nielsen
I think I've figured out why InstallPackage.ApplyPath method is failing for me,
and I think this is a bug in the DTF code. Phil's comments got me thinking and
I've done my best to debug what's going on in ApplyPatch. I'm a newbie on
several levels here, so forgive me if I've missed something.

The ApplyPatch method does two basic things: 1) applies the transform to the
database and 2) copies the patch cab from the patch and inserts it into the
database. Applying the transform seems to work correctly, but the problem is in
moving the patch cab into the database.

Before moving the cab, ApplyPatch creates a record for the patch cab in the
Media table, using the string renamePatchCabinet ("netfx_PCW_CAB_NDP" in my
case)

string patchPrefix = Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(patchPackage.FilePath) +
"_";
...
string renamePatchCabinet = patchPrefix + patchCabinet;
...
this.Execute("INSERT INTO `Media` (`DiskId`, `LastSequence`, `Cabinet`) VALUES
({0}, '{1}', '#{2}')", renamePatchMediaDiskId, lastSeq, renamePatchCabinet);

When ApplyPatch inserts the cab into the database, the cab is named with the
patchCabinet string ("PCW_CAB_NDP" in my case)

patchCabRec[1] = patchCabinet;
patchCabRec.SetStream(2, patchCabFile);
this.Execute("INSERT INTO `_Streams` (`Name`, `Data`) VALUES (?, ?)",
patchCabRec);

So when I call InstallPackage.ExtractFiles, I get an error message "Stream Not
Found: netfx_PCW_CAB_NDP", as the stream is actually named "PCW_CAB_NDP" in the
database.

If I change: "patchCabRec[1] = patchCabinet;" to "patchCabRec[1] =
renamePatchCabinet;", InstallPackage.ExtractFiles will extract all this files
without any errors.

On a related note, I'm having a challenge with InstallPackage.Commit(). If I
instantiate InstallPackage with DatabaseOpenMode.Transact,

when I call InstallPackage.Commit(), I get a "function failed during execution"
exception with the following StackTrace:

   at Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.SummaryInfo.Persist()
   at Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.Database.Commit()
...

If I instantiate InstallPackage with DatabaseOpenMode.Direct, at the end of my
using() I also get a "function failed during execution" exception with the
following StackTrace:
   at Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.SummaryInfo.Persist()
   at Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.Database.Commit()
   at Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.Database.Dispose(Boolean disposing)
   at Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.InstallerHandle.Dispose()
...

Strangely, I can use instantiate Database with DatabaseOpenMode.Transact and
Database.Commit() seems to work fine. (I haven't tried Database with
DatabaseOpenMode.Direct)

>From what I can tell in the source, InstallPackage.Commit() is inherited from
>Database.Commit(), so I'm a bit perplexed. Any ideas?

Jeff

It's not clear to me what that ApplyPatch method is doing under the covers.
It's not MsiApplyPatch(), because that does an install of the patch. It
appears to actually be MsiDatabaseAplyTransform() judging from the
transform parameter, and that just modifies the tables.

This might help:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/heaths/archive/2006/02/14/532200.aspx

particularly where he mentions using MsiOpenDatabase on a patch file and
then looking for streams.

Take a look at:

He uses the VSIX extension. (Waiting for VS2012 support in 3.8)

Any updates on this? I would also really like an example for the use of the
VsixPackage element. I mean, if it doesn't work from MSI, then how should
you use this element (and I mean why would it even exist? there must be
some use case!)

If it's really not working, why not add an extension to the Burn
bootstrapper rather than on the component level?

My scenario:
I can get the installer to compile and run, but the VSIX will not get
installed, even if Vital="yes" attribute is set. I'm using Wix 3.7 and
trying to install on Visual Studio 2012 Express and Integrated Shell.

Re: [WiX-users] Does anyone have a VSIX example

2013-11-12 Thread Gonçalo Lopes
Ok, it actually works as indicated above. I actually screwed up some
install condition during my attempts to get it to work...

One last piece of information, though. Initially I was trying to go over
the MSDN recommendations:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2010/06/09/vsix-best-practices.aspx

In here they actually mention that for MSI installed VSIX packages, you
should add the metadata element: true

This makes it so the user has to use add/remove programs to manage the VSIX
installation instead of using the extension manager.

However, if you add this to your VSIX, the WiX installer will actually fail
during installation with some unspecified error.

2013-11-12 Thread Rob Mensching
The feature request is a Bundle thing. Agree with you if this is for inside and
MSI then Upgrade table should do all you need.

I'm curious about what this would do that cannot already be done in the Upgrade
table. You just specify a list of UpgradeCode values, set only detect, and get
a property set. Different version ranges can be done too.

[WiX-users] Error configuring component when installing ComPlus app on 64bit os

2013-11-12 Thread Matt_Lane
I am having trouble using wix to install a 32-bit complus app on a 64-bit
server. The install does work on a 32-bit server.
The error is 'Error occurred while configuring component 'IAsyncProcessor'
with attribute 'System.EnterpriseServices.InterfaceQueuingAttribute'.'
More complete log included below.

The application is a queued component. It is targeting the .net 2.0
framework.

The component that I am installing does have a somewhat complicated class
structure:
1. Dll 1 has the interface definition.
2. Dll 2 has a base class that implments the interface in dll 1.
3. Dll 3 is a subclass of dll 2 and that is the component I am trying
to
install.
It appears that the error occurrs when installing a complus components for
dll 3 and it is trying to find the interface defined in dll 1.

As a test I broke my install out into two separate packages. One to install
all the dependent files in the gac and registers the needed components for
COM.
Then a second install to just create the complus application and install the
appropriate component.

When run on a 64-bit 2008 Server the log looks like this:

Here is the wix code for the component that is failing.

Any thoughts of what might be causing the error would be great.

Re: [WiX-users] util:UpgradeSearch like util:ProductSearch

2013-11-12 Thread Alexey Larsky-RUS
I don't seen feature, but try add a thing.

Now I have troubles with uninstalling old (WiX 2.x) MSIs. Major Upgrade doesn't
work with its.
So could be nice be able to find installed products (with broken / incompatible
Major Update functionality) by UpgradeCode + version condition (like
found_versions < current_ver or all_versions) and uninstall its before start
existence checking in burn bundle.

(Possibly) avoid the Burn bug tickled when you have detect-only Upgrade table
lines and Burn is trying to determine an upgrade.

Re: [WiX-users] Purely WiX patching and FeatureRef

2013-11-12 Thread TimM
Well add my name to this request as well to having this work be put to the
top of the list

Since Purely WiX patching requires generation of the .wixpdb files I would
like to know how these work if the install supports multiple languages? We
had generation of the .wixpdb files turned off as at the time they were just
taking up room and we did not know what the usages of these files were until
we were looking into patching.

My question is do we have to make use of the other language generated
.wixpdb files if the patches we are creating are only application file
updates? Just wanted to make sure that we do not have to generate a patch
file for every language that our software supports as that would be harder
to manage/maintain.

Thank.

The util: Product Search searches by ProductCode.
Can be useful have util:UpgradeCode for searching by UpgradeCode.
