Re: [wpkg-users] Set WPKG service to run before network services?
David Petterson da...@ifm.liu.se writes: I run into this problem on a laptop using the WPKG Client 1.3.9: The WPKG service run but did not install any software so I took a look in the log file. It turned out to be the WPKG service had run before the network services had started. I changed the service startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start) and during the next reboot software started to install. Is there a way to change the service dependence to include network services? Maybe using sc config wpkgservice ? I do not have a windows virtual machine right now for the exact command line. [wpkg-users] WPKG Development Status
Is WPKG development dead? Would be nice to have more regular client and server releases. Would also like a web gui to manage installs. WPKGexpress is not being developed on. Current state makes it hard to check 100+ machines for what installed and what did not. Would even pay a small amount to have a more robust server setup. No. Neither community nor development is dead. However nobody can deny that WPKG reached some level of maturity which makes it difficult to extend it as a kind of private project. Reasons are: - WPKG features cover most use-cases in small and medium enterprises. Large enterprises are pretty unlikely to use WPKG. - Integrating into large enterprises requires test environments and effort (spent by volunteers) as well as software licenses. - The amount of users for such advanced features would be small and therefore test effort does not easily justify spending limited resources on features which are used by a small user base. I personally see strong demand in the following area: - Interface for package management as well as machine state tracking. Well WPKGExpress and inventory tools might help here as well as publishing wpkg.xml to a public server (see wiki) but for some admins it's not sufficient. In my environment I've faced both, admins which like XML files and others who ware completely unable to use it unless there is a dummy-GUI presenting XML content in user-friendly format. - Client which displays more information about WPKG state (logon delay, status output). Well wpkg-gp seems to work on such issues but limits imposed by Microsoft make it hard to do it properly. Honestly I didn't even use it yet. Still using WPKG-Client on Win7 installations. I am mainly working on wpkg.js and I am not an exception... Recently I've been very busy with other tasks (yes, sometimes the job I earn money with has higher priority than a community project, my apologizes for this). However I have some changes and enhancements on my task list. Some good fixes have been provided to Bugzilla too. I am looking forward to include them soon into official wpkg.js. If there would be any critical bug which affects lots of users I would of course try fix it immediately. This is by no means an excuse for slow progress, but it gives some reasons. The best you can do is of course to either file bug reports or discuss on the list. For many things there are already solutions available. br, Rainer - wpkg-users mailing list archives http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/wpkg-users/ ___ wpkg-users mailing list wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org http://lists.wpkg.org/mailman/listinfo/wpkg-users

Hi Zach, I do full-quote your text to the list too so others can profit too. I hope you don't mind. On 21.03.2011 20:25, Zach Musselman wrote: You make very good points. I love WPKG and look forward to it's future enhancements. Since I cannot code, I will stick with providing any input usability wise. Thanks for the information. Regular updates about this information on wpkg.org might help grow more users if they see more active development being done. That is one of the first things I look for in an open source project, to make sure it is still active and being developed on. Good work so far to all involved! I look forward to the future of wpkg. Thanks We also need maintainers for documetation and wiki pages :). Some of us are strong at coding and some are good at other disciplines. I would not even count myself as being an outstanding coder but it was sufficient to provide enhancements at a certain place and that's where I started to contribute. You're right that some coordination on the tasks and information about currently ongoing background work might give a better impression on the project to newbies. I am also often looking for activity on a project before I decide for a software because nobody wants to end up in a dead-end. Having a look at the mailing list however shows that we are still active and using the software. br, Rainer - wpkg-users mailing list archives http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/wpkg-users/ ___ wpkg-users mailing list wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org http://lists.wpkg.org/mailman/listinfo/wpkg-users

There are some shortcoming in WPKG Client design - or rather, Windows Vista and later had some fundamental changes which made some of WPKG Client's features not working. Long term, it is likely WPKG Client will be replaced by WPKG Group Policy (wpkg-gp). -- Tomasz Chmielewski http://wpkg.org - wpkg-users mailing list archives http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/wpkg-users/ ___ wpkg-users mailing list wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org http://lists.wpkg.org/mailman/listinfo/wpkg-users

WPKG desperately needs good documentation for new users. There a number of things that are not obvious when starting out. Even if you're not a good writer, starting something makes it much easier for others to come along and improve it. I really wish I had more free time to contribute in this area. At present, I try to maintain the wiki entries for software I use by updating them when I notice new versions and cleaning them up and reorganizing them when needed. You're fully right. I remember some discussions I had with Tomasz already years ago. At this time we also discussed about creating a kind of kick-start guide which guides the user to set up a test environment (just SMB server, WPKG share, WPKG client and a single package). Just to demonstrate how to set up the whole environment in 30 minutes and deploy a single package. After installing such an environment it's usually obvious how WPKG works but as a newbie it's difficult to reach this point if you don't find the right entry point in the documentation. If there would be a simple PDF (10 pages) we could include it in the WPKG download since one could get easily lost within the WPKG wiki but a very simple documentation might help. The current text file is a bit too simple... br, Rainer - wpkg-users mailing list archives http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/wpkg-users/ ___ wpkg-users mailing list wpkg-users@lists.wpkg.org http://lists.wpkg.org/mailman/listinfo/wpkg-users
