Thru Kurt Vonnegut and Ana's Obit
http://anaobits.blogspot.com/2007/04/kurt-vonnegut.html

Not so sure I like the reporting part of all this, but I'm SO happy I
could actually reach someone by telephone to speak the experience
outloud in words. Necesarily so. I'm not so sure I could actually
type this account, not having released some of the energy I just
caught.

Responding to Alan's CNN News Break I spent a little time with
Ana's-obit prepping the corpse. I spent many hours with Kurt... as I
guess you all did.

SO... after posting the blog entry I was doing other, online, when I
heard a message come in my mailer.
It was report of a comment having been left at Kurt Vonnegut's Ana-obit
entry... within less than a minute of having MADE the blog entry...
someone read the post and commented... within a minute? I had a friend
on the phone sharing the experience within a minute of that. AND, it
was ONLY after having made the telephone connection did the WrYter's
Listserve email of Kurt Vonnegut's Ana-obit arrive in my mailer!

I KNOW nothing that praises a man more than time.

WWW2. Abbreviated Instant Gratification is now possible.

From the Globe And Mail, Social Studies column of a Daily Miscellany
of Information by Michael Kesterton, today, quoting Raymond Carver,
Writer's don't need tricks or gimmicks or even necessarily need to be
the smartest fellows on the block. At the risk of appearing foolish, a
writer sometimes needs to be able to just stand and gape at this or
that thing--a sunset or an old shoe-- in absolute and simple
amazement.

Having clipped the article and carried it with me (in my empty wallet)
since this afternoon, intending full well to write to Mr Carver's
quote, I fortunately got to experience Kurt in a very special way.

And so I tend to write about them... or about the staring or the gaping
or the something anyway

Simplex 17

2007-04-12 Thread Dan Waber
from publisher derek beaulieu:

Simplex 17

On December 7, 2005 I sent the following invitation:
this is an invitation to participate in a collaborative / constraint-based
concrete poetry portfolio. Letraset was created as a business tool for the
standardization of lettering in technical drawings and blueprints. Although it
has fallen out of favour due to the proliferation of computers in technical
drawing, letraset continues to be used in concrete poetry. By assigning the
same material to a variety of international concrete poets and artists, this
project examines how content and form interplay in concrete poetry, and will be
an insight in to the malleability of language and materiality through different
visual compositional structures and styles.

Seventeen poets and artists agreed to participate. Each received a full sheet
of Simplex letraset dry-transfer lettering (every participant received the same
typeface, although the size of the face varied due to difficulties i had in
finding enough sheets) and were restricted to using only the material supplied
(i.e.: no additional materials), and responses had to fit on a single sheet of
8 ½ x 11 (or A4 if international) paper.

Simplex 17 contains work by: Bruce Andrews, Jonathan Ball, John M. Bennett,
Christian Bök, Nicole Burisch, Jason Christie, Craig Dworkin, Geoffrey
Hlibchuk, Matthew Hollett, Frances Kruk, Donato Mancini, Billy Mavreas, kevin
mcpherson-eckhoff, Max Middle, Rob Read, Pete Spence, Dan Waber

This portfolio is published in an edition of 60 copies, of which 20 are for
sale at $8 each. for more information, or to order copies please contact derek

Chicago Public School employees info stolen
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=3Dlocalid=3D5190814
A huge breach of security has put thousands of Chicago Public School
employees at risk. A thief stole two laptop computers containing private
information about 40,000 current and former employees. The heist was
caught on tape.
Investigators say its still unclear if the laptops were stolen for the
sensitive information they contained or as a crime of opportunity.
Either way, it has some questioning how the school district safeguards
valuable information.

Cyberbullies, hate and character education.
http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Teachers/safe.html
43% of the youth population say they've been bullied online.
In a unanimous decision, the New Jersey Supreme Court has ruled that
school districts are responsible for stopping bias-based harassment of
students Much like employees in a workplace, students have the right
to attend school without being subjected to repeated taunts from other
children, the court said.
Gender and race still an issue for school leaders

Gender Bias
COLUMBIA, Mo. =AD Women fill the vast majority of=20
classrooms as teachers, but check the=20
administration office, and most of the school=20
leaders are men. A new book details a national=20
survey that reveals a gender gap in America's school systems.
It's shocking to me that in 2007 there is still=20
such a disparity. In 1992, only 5 percent of=20
America's school systems were led by women. Now,=20
that number is 18 percent. I would expect it to=20
be at least 50/50 at this point, said Margaret=20
Grogan, professor and department chair in the=20
University of Missouri-Columbia College of=20
Education's Department of Educational Leadership=20
and Policy Analysis. It's not about education;=20
it is about society. Despite the fact that gender=20
is considered to be a non-issue today, there is=20
still a gender issue when it comes to leadership and management.
The book =AD Women Leading School Systems:=20
Uncommon Roads to Fulfillment =AD was published=20
this month and co-authored by Grogan and C. Cryss=20
Brunner. It is based on the first major national=20
survey of all female superintendents in the=20
country. Nearly 1,200 women representing=20
positions of leadership in school districts=20
responded to the survey. The study was=20
commissioned by the American Association of School Administrators.

Just Another Day

2007-04-12 Thread Thomas savage
Just Another Day*

The day Buddha's birthday and Easter coincide,
I see a play called Before God Was Invented,
Expecting nothing. Joe Franklin, the host
Of a long-dead show called Memory Lane
Strides past me in the waiting area.
  Audience members are prized
At old Theater For The New City,
  Even the dead and rearrived.
Am I a pirate of penance
  Attending a so-called Pagan play?
We sing to all of me.
Why not take that high note, baby?
What a noisy trance you dance to.
  Before the nuclear family,
Did nature create it's own bonds?
Cavemen Bodhisattvas lost in a time warp
Show their muscles and choose women.
  The ghost of Frank Zappa
  Seems to be their leader.
  Carried away--maybe he's just sleeping.
  Prometheus gave you fire
Then skipped out, happily, into the dark.
Time remains mean when moving slowly.
Silence gilds the beautiful young body boy.
Loud fervor fails to impress the moon.
Pretty boy hides behind temporarily happy bush.
  Flowers shiver from his touch.
Follow your own feet without tripping.
Up in a Central Park of the Pleistocene
The animals don't want to be eaten
Though the women men want to fuck.
Oh sod, thy earth is dirty, dirty
In the eyes of near-sighted beholders.
  Two tribes per zoo
  May not be viable long.
Where did they get a rope in prehistory?
Someone knitting, knitting in the dark?
Give away the land to the land.
Make no bad pictures on cave walls
Or magic rock will get you, bad, bad, bad.
  Deep silence and deep sleep
  May not be the same.

only a bimbo wld. introduce a radio verse sayin it had prbs. with craft yet
still worthy of being heard. thats called speaking out of the side of your
mouth,
letting the dirty work of truth, shut down the facts of truth.
that poetry is not craft or nazi factory precision. poetry is whatever poets
decide. not radio. announcers reading it. ina gushhead voice.
with no care for its transient nature. all these old ideas.
such shite. banal. tawdry. poetry is a way of life.
dig. dig the repeats. not the knotted crapola of them behind a microphone.
give me a 'bad' ve rse anyday and a microphone. schizophonia is the space.
of declaration not the sap of macroni.
