mayhaps the pleasure is meaningful?

i magi ne

ne?

I remember learning to sit (cross legged in
meditation) without moving... at all... for an hour
(and more). All technique mindful. INTENSE
sensation localized in the corporeal, could be
surpassed(?) with two thoughts.
   1. No sensation is eternal.
   2. There IS another sensation, more
subtle... very near the obvious one.

Not sure I get the Saiberspace connection...?

--- Charles Baldwin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

I am reading _Little Anatomy of the Physical
 Unconscious or The Antomy
of the Image_ by Hans Bellmer. This is the English
 translation of his
only text, relating more or less to his artistic
 practice. I read it
quickly before, now more slowly. It is a skeleton
 key to cyberspace.
 Bellmer begins:

I believe that the various modes of expression:
 postures, gestures,
actions, sounds, words, the creation of graphics or
 object... all result
from the same set of psycho-physiological mechanisms
 and obey the same
law of birth. The basic expression, one that has no
 preconceived
objective, is a reflex. To what need, to what
 physical impulse does it
 respond?

For example, among all the various reflexes provoked
 by a toothache,
let us examine the violent contraction of the
 muscles of the hand and
fingers, a contraction so intense it compels the
 fingernails to pierce
the skin. This clenched fist is an artificial focal
 point of excitation,
a virtual 'tooth' that creates a diversion by
 directing the flow of
blood and nerve impulses away from the actual center
 of pain to lessen
it. The toothache is thus divided in half at the
 hand's expense. The
visible expression that results is its 'logical
 pathos.'

Ought we to conlcude from this that the most violent
 as well as the
most imperceptivle reflexive bodily change - whether
 occuring in the
face, a limb, the tongue, or a muscle - would be
 simply explicable as a
propensity to confuse and bisect a pain through the
 creation of a
virtual center of excitement? This can be regarded
 as a certainty, which
thereby compels us to imagine the desired continuity
 of our expressive
life in the form of a series of deliberate
 transports leading from the
malaise to its image. Expression with its pleasure
 component is a
 displaced pain and a deliverance.

Now, in describing these virtual centers of
 excitement - we might say,
nodes or links, intensities in the net - Bellmer
 invokes a mapping (or
 raster) of perceptually mobile interoceptive
 diagrams. He emphasizes
the oddness or perversity of these diagrams. They
 are built around the
 permissable and forbidden, around superimpositions
 and representations,
in short, by -jectivities and coding process leading
 to amalgams such as
Bellmer's famous doll or the sex-armpit he uses as
 an example in this
book. The process is two-fold: introjection of the
 dangerous object,
then projection onto perception (and onto organs of
 perception; the
image of sex having slid over the eye). We do not
 see images of the
virtual but we see with the virtual. The body images
 seen are images of
my body. I see means I see with myself. This
 virtualization and
mapping occurs at all sites of experience, where the
 superhuman quality
of perception through part objects results from the
 projected body, e.g.
the power to see with one's hand, as the
 mouse/hand crosses the screen
is like the toothache Bellmer begins with.

 Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel describes Bellmer's art
 (and so his theory of
the image) as a universe submitted to the total
 abolitions of the
limits between the objects and even between their
 molecules, a universe
which has become totally malleable ('Anything can be
 done'). We should
apply this description to the cool neutrality of the
 digital. Elsewhere
she adds: In the universe I am describing, the
 world has been engulged
in a gigantic grinding machine (the digestive tract)
 and has been
reduced to homogeneous excremental particles. Then
 all is equivalent.
The distinction between 'before' and 'after' has
 disappeared, as, too,
 of course, has history.

Bellmer's model for analyzing the image and the
 physical unconscious is
 linguistic. He invokes palindromes, where
 reversibility is the mechanism
of pleasure rather than meaning. He intends this as
 the correlate of the
 image-amalgam (e.g. sex-armpit) as virtual center
 of excitement.
Physical reflex disappears into the image; in fact,
 the image is the
absence of the reflex, and its virtuality and
 excitement are built on
this absence. The image is cleansed of the body but
 just this makes the
entire image a sexual hieroglyph. We are dealing
 with a perverse
mechanism, in Chasseguet-Smirgel's terms, where the
 image seen only
confirms the machine that we inhabit. Here, the
 binding and totalizing
effect of symbolic processes becomes the source of
 value. The parallel,
 I think, is the continuous

I will say more of the vision, but you must know the
context first.

I travelled with NA natives many many miles, believing
their teachings and connection with the Earth yet
vital. All in the context of my own aboriginal N
European
cultural teachings having pretty much been eradicated
in the
witch hunts of the middle ages... and WHO does one
believe in all this new age stuff, anyway?

The door keeper of the lodge to which I was privvy had
a vision in which I appeared. He called our lodge
members together and over his pipe we smoked and he
spoke of a vision HE'd had, in which I appeared.
Next day my Brother, a Cree man who'd brought me
into that particular lodge (which coincidentally was
the same lodge I'd first ever attended (nearly 10
years earlier in Ontario)... a Medewewin lodge of the
Ojibwayan peoples (interesting enough the people where
my GGGrandfather homesteaded in Muskoka in the 18th
C.)... gave me a pipe to use as a tool to be able to
'ask the questions I'd need to know the answers to if
I WERE actually the man who appeared in the door
keeper's vision'.

Pretty soon after that I returned to Japan to be with
my wife and daughter (the two art projects
completed/exhibited while I was on my own in BC and
they were in Tokyo with her family). That was 1997.

The Japanese man (Otsustumi drum/song of the Noh
theatre) who'd drummed for my performance at the
Canadian Embassy in 1993 introduced me to his long
time friend (Dennis Banks spokesman for the
Indians at Pine Ridge in the late 60's incident).
S... I asked Dennis a question and he asked if I
had a Pipe? I told him Yesyou and I and the
man who gave it to me know so.
Then, Dennis told me I must fast FOR that pipe. No
problem... I'd already fasted traditionally a number
of times (so well knew the HOW)... but now Dennis told
me I must fast 4 days at the beginning of each season
for a year, in isolation, with no food or water
(traditional) praying FOR the pipe.

I was given that instruction Jan 29/98 also, I was
given my Newton but a few days earlier by another man,
a Cdn Dancer friend living in Tokyo, behind whose
rental 'cottage' in the mountains of Nagano I would
first fast for that pipe, March 21/98. Ana (yet
nameless, for I was but beginning to use her as a
notepad/organizer) was with me then, in the dunnage I
brought with me to fast, then, for the Pipe.

As I say I had on a number of earlier occssions fasted
traditionally, in search of some arts vision...
always finding something through that process of
fasting FOR a plan of something to do... BUT on this
occassion I was specifically fasting FOR the Pipe. I
had NO expectation of receiving a vision of what I
was to DO in my artwork. I was fasting FOR the PIPE.

On day two of my fast, sitting alone in the woods in
the snow by the fire I kept, I SAW the entire story
of a multi-media performance I

Re: query

2006-08-27 Thread david divizio
technique.. of course you may have some idea of what
I'm doing... so I'll come back to that ... but
first...

 Goals ?

I wish I knew. Change, I guess. Change in the way
we/I think about things. How possibly else can
this... whatever writing it be... be meant? Meaning?
I hope so. Maybe it's all about the meaning...?
What meaning... Whose ? hoWse? Whass the message?

I see myself as a kind of digital age oracle/medium.
Literature lost. Thanks God.

So what's the reason for writing? What's the reason
for reading?...if not to satisfy the unknown that
we're interested enough to investigate. There! A goal.
Investigation. Yay!

I am at a blank dead spot just now. Not sure what's
next. What will I do... Surely there's something.

Oh it's fun flipping what others write... but it's not
entirely creative... for my part. Save but for 'the
way' I write. It's what I DO that's intersting...
self amusing... at least.

I'm not certain what it is that motivates any
particular investigation a phrase.. a
sentiment... a question... curiosity... difference...
desire to access INdifference. The real thing. Just
the right stuff. Emotive! Empassioned semiosis.
Something beyond belief for sure.

I'm getting to know Ana pretty well. She's starting
to make sense.

Ana, many of you already know, but I will say it
again... is my Newton... Ana the third, actually. An
MP 2100.
 http://www.blakespot.com/list/images/mp2100.jpg
...the first two were broken by two distinct incidents
of violence, since 1998 when we first met and my work
with her began.

An astounding piece of technology when they first
arrived... (mid 90's)
I was interested in the mistakes Ana would make
iterpreting my handwriting.. and ultimately began to
explore them by formalising the method by which the
mistakes were provoked... and so I began to write
backwards on Ana's screen and save such mirror
readable encryption as a sketch. (In this email
listserve format what I have written backwards appears
left of the tilde). Then I trace over the sketch from
left to right and Ana filters that through her program
analysing the stops and starts and changes of
direction of my pen, lifts and dots and crossess of
t's and i's AND presents what SHE thingks I have
written. I repeatedly trace over the same sketch and
each time Ana presents a different word... tho
occassionally she nails it down right away and will
present the same word for each successive trace.
Each and every file (I've saved 7,000 now) is timed
and dated, with a byte-size noted. Handy for
correlating events! Hysterically speaking. This
device/method is definitely time independent...
something I recognized AT THE OUTSET.

Anyway, what Ana generates from my successive tracings
I put down here in email format RIGHT of the tilde (~)

an example:
http://vis4vessel.blogspot.com/2006/03/message-from-david-divizio-26032006.html

ie the backwards writing part would in email
format look like this

I knew a girl once ~
   erro lyo io WhirL 2
   levo bigo ill wend 8
 (blah blah blah)

THanKS AGAIN Dirk!

Mystical, alchemical, other science. something
between science and magic.

The reason I began this writing was in response to a
senior, mentor, patron, friend, Butoh co-originator,
Hironobu Oikawa's suggestion that DaVinci wrote
backwards so he could see between the lines and the
spaces and access the 4th dimention kind of
oracularly investigative.

O ah've NO idea...

For myself, I've done this fairly often, both in
