According to Ferdinand de Saussure's thesis human language can be divided into three fundamental aspects: the biological preconditions for speaking (langage), the fixed system of rules and signs (langue) and the act of speaking itself (parole). The supposition that the language-system and the speechact are linked reciprocally and that there is no backflow into the system without speaking, it gets clear that the human language withdraws itself from an immediate observation. It can only be examined in the course of the reconstructing its process of appearance, that is, its articulation. LEA Updates
Hi Guys, A few updates from my neck of the woods: 1. I've asked every1 from my list to participate, only one response from joseph so far: -- On 4/11/07, Joseph DeLappe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello Mez, Thank you for thinking of me. This looks to be very interesting. I will definitely consider submitting at minimum something about my work – perhaps an image and a short essay regarding dead-in-iraq. If I can manage I may also submit something as an educator as my advanced digital class has been engaged in a series of group performances in Second Life, first as the Chuck Norris Performance Ensemble – we have been taking on various celebrity and other guises as a group and engaging in performative actions, SL flashmobs if you will. -- This seems exciting + am looking forward to [t]h[eir]is submission. 2. What do you think of the below? I'd be inclined to indicate paintings aren't within the scope of the edition, but don't want to be too narrow if you guys think otherwise? -- -- Forwarded message -- From: Sharon Molloy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Apr 9, 2007 8:54 AM Subject: dispersion: call for entries To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am an artist(painter) and member of art/science collaborations website for both artists and scientists. I saw in their opportunities section your call for submissions for papers and 'artworks' reflecting 'dispersive anatomies' . my work definitly relates to this idea. So my question is: are paintings part of what is allowed? Thank you. regards Sharon Molloy -- 3. I'd like to add another solicitation for the gallery: http://kristusyoshiyuki.blogspot.com/ I'd like your thoughts on this one. 4. What do we think of Nisar's hard-line approach to finished artworks? I think the theme indicates artworks in various stages [especially ongoing] should be considered? 5. I had a quick look through the prostrate cancer paper and my opinion is that it is better geared towards a relevant scientific journal. I'd be inclined to reject it. Recently I traded in for a copy of Sartre, Troubled Sleep, signed by him, scrawled signature to a friend. Barthes was hit by a van I think, all these men and some women but less women - Derrida, Foucault, Deleuze, Guattari, Lyotard, Baudrillard, Althusser, Lacan, bounded by what seems the cold war iron of Badiou. Kristeva, Cixous, Irigaray, Wittig, perhaps are still alive. I raised myself on all of them and now they're divided among the militants, the academics, the pieces of 'deconstruction' applicable to any analysis where something or other falls apart, 'simulacrum' following DeBord's 'specta- cle' where 'revolution' became synonymous with natural skin care and something everyone did against the name of 'freedom.' I don't mean to say anything here, I wonder about the doubting that once swayed the world, Jabes, Blanchot, or what I read as doubting, never say anything unless said to oneself, withdrawn, proffered as kind of a peripheral speech. This wasn't them, my reading, what I garnered, that excitement, Merleau-Ponty, at the birth of the world, its bearing, re-borning. Vietnam is now mute, May 68 almost forty years ago and most of us humans have never thought of burning monks. Tibet is a foregone conclusion; can one imagine the Dalai Lama back at the Potala? Bohm kept on moving; he was close to insane with the stress of homelessness. I wait for my first stroke, but none of the others, none of them, none of you, will speak to me. I'll go to heaven or hell with stitches in my mouth. I'll try to say something about the world. _How the world really shapes up_
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=439315in_page_id=1811 We all know what the world looks like. But a new series of extraordinary maps shows our planet in a very different light. Rather than defining each country by size, these computer-generated modified maps - or cartograms - redraw the globe with each country's size proportionate to its strengths, or weaknesses, in a whole series of categories. For instance, when it comes to military spending, the U.S. appears bloated, but Africa is huge when HIV prevalence is mapped. The cartograms were produced in a unique collaboration between the universities of Michigan in the U.S. and Sheffield. Fun and niftyhttp://writerresponsetheory.org/wordpress/2007/01/07/snap-preview-art/. However, the reason for this post is to direct you to an artist implementation. Code artist Mez has integrated the system into poem[s], utilising the preview as a kind of layered stretchtext or stretchimages. http://writerresponsetheory.org/wordpress/2007/01/07/snap-preview-art/ -- --LFG Curiosity, Play, or Xperimention PST-- -http://netwurker.livejournal.com/ -- sharding.ur.reality.purples

Wikileaks.org
Wikileaks http://www.wikileaks.org/index.html is developing an uncensorable Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. Our primary interests are oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to those in the west who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their own governments and corporations. We aim for maximum political impact; this means our interface is identical to Wikipedia and usable by non-technical people. We have received over 1.1 million documents so far from dissident communities and anonymous sources. We believe that transparency in government activities leads to reduced corruption, better government and stronger democracies. Many governments would benefit from increased scrutiny by the world community, as well as their own people. We believe this scrutiny requires information. Historically that information has been costly - in terms of human life and human rights. Wikileaks will facilitate safety in the ethical leaking movement. -- --LFG Curiosity, Play, or Xperimention PST-- -http://netwurker.livejournal.com/ -- sharding.ur.reality.purples

So Mez created a quick-and-easy blog dis[ap]posable, put up a few technically very simple HTML pages on another server, and linked to them from her poem. Ta-da: instantly a new genre is born. Similar effects have been used, so I suppose it's not exactly a new genre. But there's something about taking disposable, ready-made, super-easy bits and pieces and putting them together as Mez has done that's just really fascinating. Yes, you can do that. Very simply. And by putting the link preview thing to a purpose other than its intended purpose (as Duchamp did with his pissoir) Mez has me seeing it all anew. -- --LFG Curiosity, Play, or Xperimention PST-- -http://netwurker.livejournal.com/ -- sharding.ur.reality.purples
