Bay Poetics as Perhaps

2006-12-13 Thread Allen Bramhall
Massachusetts Bay sounds sad, so blue and big, such as a hill passing
the highway. Bay Poetics is a title goosed from some other ether, trial
balloon-sized and after all, we can't all own the sun. the sun ran
behind the blue hill, discussed in terms of praxis and the federated
year. will next year turn callow as we wind the highway up and let it
smooth its association with all blue hills? this is a question for the
end of 2006, when Bay Poetics tries hard for us. is there a bearable way
we can listen to all poems, or only those from the side of the hill and
the blue ocean filling the bay with traces? answers cannot control the
event. Bay Poetics stuck to its principle of pages, and were read aloud
or alone. Stephanie was in charge and that settled only one thing,
correct dawn after night out. then Bay Poetics was austere because even
Oakland crowds tears. and the bay of Massachusetts rose over the hill,
the baying of people who read poems probed the forested hillside as if
lost children were to be found. how do bays accept the ocean? how do
hills accept the sky? Bay Poetics tosses some convivial flower into the
warm ocean and daylights of that coast. winter is in Massachusetts, tho
bought cheap. icebergs falling anywhere are full of frozen cheer. poetry
dumps a load on you know who. thus this story allows itself. you may
serve your Bay Poetics now.

X-RAY RAINBOW. In 1670 Isaac Newton demonstrated the composite
nature of sunlight when he sent a carefully collimated sunbeam
through a prism, which spread out the light into a rainbow of
colors; by sending a beam of single color through a second prism
(with no further spreading) Newton showed that the color was not
being imposed by the prism but was intrinsic to the light itself.
Now physicists using the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National
Lab have spread out a beam of x rays (which are, after all, just a
more energetic version of visible light) into a rainbow of colors.
Trying to reflect x rays from a surface is difficult because x-ray
wavelengths are some 10,000 times shorter than those for visible
light. Glancing reflection of only a few tenths of a degree is
normally possible, and even then the beam of x rays will suffer very
little wavelength-dependent spreading. However, another phenomenon,
Bragg diffraction, allows for scattering of x rays from a crystal
through large angles; in this case the incoming x rays scatter not
merely from a top layer of atoms in the crystal but from numerous
atomic planes. Furthermore, if the atomic planes are not parallel
to the crystal surface the diffracted x ray beam will be spread out
prismatically into a range of component wavelengths (or colors). In
the Argonne experiment an incoming beam of 9 keV x-ray photons with
angular spread of only 1 micro-radian (two-tenths of an arcsecond)
was backwards scattered and spread out into an x-ray rainbow with an
angular dispersion of 230 micro-radians (see figure at
http://www.aip.org/png/2006/272.htm). Argonne physicist Yuri
Shvyd'ko ([EMAIL PROTECTED], 630-252-2901) says that his rainbow
is not just a novelty but will have many practical applications in
x-ray optics. These include compression of x-ray pulses in time and
the development of x-ray monochomators (which fashion x-ray beams of
pure wavelength, or color) and much higher-resolution x-ray
spectrometers. (Shvyd'ko et al., Physical Review Letters, 8 December)

BEST EVIDENCE YET FOR RECENT WATER ON MARS. Photographs returned by
the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft have revealed new bright
deposits in Martian gullies that suggest water has flowed on the
surface of the planet sometime in the last seven years. The images,
taken in 2004 and 2005, show what appear to be deposits of minerals
left by bursts of water running down the sides of two gullies,
according to Michael Malin, the chief scientist for the spacecraft?s
camera system. The light-colored deposits were not there in pictures
taken in 1999. While previous evidence has shown water ice and
water vapor exist below the surface of Mars, this is the "strongest
evidence to date that water still flows occasionally on the surface
of Mars," Malin said at a NASA press conference on Dec. 6. Cold
temperatures on the planet, coupled with a thin atmosphere, do not
allow water to persist on the surface of Mars. Researchers think
water could remain liquid long enough, after breaking through from
an underground source, to carry debris downhill before freezing or
evaporating.
These new findings heighten the intrigue surrounding the potential
for life on Mars; given water and a steady source of heat, bacteria
can grow in extremely harsh environments. The shapes of the
deposits are consistent with what one would expect to see if the
materials were carried by water, NASA scientists said. The pictures
show the liquid easily flowed around small obstacles on the way down
a hill, eventually branching out like fingers at the end. With the
flow patterns traveling down the slope for 500 to 600 yards, project
scientist Kenneth Edgett estimates the volume of each liquid burst
was equivalent to ?five to 10 swimming pools of water.? The light
tone of the deposits could be from frost being continuously
replenished by ice from within the body of the deposit. Or the light
color could be a salty crust, which would be a sign of water?s
effects on concentrating the salts. The deposits are unlikely to be
caused by dry dust sliding down the slope because dust moved by
rover tracks, dust devils and fresh craters on Mars is typically
darker than surrounding areas. (More information at

NEWS RELEASE: 2006-149 December 13, 2006

Geologists Finding a Different Mars Underneath

Mars is showing scientists its older, craggier face buried beneath the surface,
thanks to a
pioneering sounding radar co-sponsored by NASA aboard the European Space
Agency's
Mars Express orbiter.

Observations by the first project to explore a planet by sounding radar
strongly suggest that
ancient impact craters lie buried beneath the smooth, low plains of Mars'
northern
hemisphere. The technique uses echoes of waves that have penetrated below the
surface.

"It's almost like having X-ray vision," said Dr. Thomas R. Watters of the
National Air and
Space Museum's Center for Earth and Planetary Studies, Washington. "Besides
finding
previously unknown impact basins, we've also confirmed that some of the subtle
topographic depressions mapped previously in the lowlands are related to impact
features."

Studies of how Mars evolved aid understanding of early Earth. Some signs of the
forces at
work a few billion years ago are more evident on Mars because, on Earth, many
of them
have been obliterated during Earth's more active resurfacing by tectonic
activity.

Watters and nine co-authors report the findings in the Dec. 14, 2006 issue of
the journal
Nature.

The researchers used the orbiter's Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and
Ionospheric
Sounding, which was provided to the European Mars mission by NASA and the
Italian
Space Agency. The instrument transmits radio waves that pass through the
Martian surface
and bounce off features in the subsurface with electrical properties that
contrast with those
of materials that buried them.

The findings bring planetary scientists closer to understanding one of the most
enduring
mysteries about the geologic evolution of the planet. In contrast to Earth,
Mars shows a
striking difference between its northern and southern hemispheres. Almost the
entire
southern hemisphere has rough, heavily cratered highlands, while most of the
northern
hemisphere is smoother and lower in elevation.

Since the impacts that cause craters can happen anywhere on a planet, the areas
with fewer
craters are generally interpreted as younger surfaces where geological
processes have
erased the impact scars. The abundance of buried craters that the radar has
detected
beneath Mars' smooth northern plains means the underlying crust of the northern
hemisphere is extremely old, "perhaps as ancient as the heavily cratered
highland crust in
the southern hemisphere."

Learning about the ancient lowland crust has been challenging because that
crust was
buried first by vast amounts of volcanic lava and then by sediments carried by
episodic
flood waters and wind.

Co-authors are Carl J. Leuschen, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics
Laboratory,
Laurel, Md.; Jeffrey J. Plaut, Ali Safaeinili and Anton B. Ivanov of NASA's Jet
Propulsion

IBM to give birth to 'Second Life' business group
Big Blue plans to launch a virtual reality project next month, and
some of its now-private islands will open to the public soon.

By Stephen Shankland
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

http://news.com.com/IBM+to+give+birth+to+Second+Life+business+group/
2100-1014_3-6143175.html

IBM will launch an official group in January to deal with Second Life
and other virtual realms from which the company hopes to profit.

Virtual reality and other visual interface work is the next project
on IBM's plate, Irving Wladawsky-Berger said in an interview at
CNET's Second Life offices. Wladawsky-Berger, vice president of
technical strategy and innovation at IBM, led the company's response
to earlier technologies that rewrote the rules of the computing
industry, such as e-commerce and Linux.

"I have been playing a strong role in helping us start our 3D
Internet and virtual-world efforts. We are launching a new EBO in
this area in January--that is, an emerging business opportunity--much
like we did with Linux and the grid," Wladawsky-Berger said Tuesday.
IBM believes the virtual realm has potential for training,
conferences and commerce, he said.

IBM in Second Life

Second Life, an online community run by a company called Linden Labs,
is an electronic universe where people's virtual representations,
called avatars, can chat, fly, teleport, browse stores and purchase
goods. IBM has one public island on Second Life, a site named after
and mimicking its Almaden Research Center near San Jose, Calif., but
the company plans to open up 12 more by Monday.

Second Life, not unlike blogging, has become a new trend among
technology companies hoping to show they're hip to the latest trends
and that believe they might benefit from direct connections to
potential customers. In recent months, IBM rivals Dell and Sun
Microsystems have launched Second Life offices and held activities.

IBM employees have a significant presence in Second Life, Wladawsky-
Berger said. "I think that there are close to 1,000 people in our
Second Life community now active, and perhaps several thousand more
that have avatars that are not that active," he said.

Now on News.com:

IBM Chief Executive Sam Palmisano's arrival in Second Life helped
pave the way, he added: "Having our CEO Sam Palmisano jump into
Second Life during our recent Beijing meeting helps a lot in
legitimizing this kind of activity within IBM. If it is good enough
for Sam…"

Second Life is one of the main areas in the new IBM group, but not
the only one, Wladawsky-Berger said. "I really believe that highly
visual and collaborative interfaces will become very important in the
way we interact with all IT applications in the future," he said.

Virtual reality connects directly with the human mind, he added.
"There is something very human about visual interfaces. I almost
think of text-based interfaces, including browsers, as 'narrowband'
into our brains, whereas visual interfaces are 'broadband' into our
brains."

2006-12-13 Thread P!^VP 0!Z!^VP

http://anaugury.blogspot.com/

This just in case there were any question as to the veracity of Ana's
ability to Augur.

My birth name is not Divizio. I chose the name Divizio after reading
in Carolyn Cassady's book "Off the Road", of their (she and Neal... and
the boys I suppose) living on Divisadera street in SF. I liked the
sound of the name Diviz...IO

And so, I made a performance in Japan in August, '98 to take the name
"David 2 Divizio".

Only today did I learn of the incarnation of another David Divizio. He
died on May 16, 1998.

On that day I remember riding the train in Tokyo... the Joban line
actually... Kita Senju station headed North out of Tokyo.
I was thinking how to get information out of process... when I held the
pen in my left hand and Ana firmly in my right.
As the train jostled out of the station a line was registered from my
allowing the stylus to float freely on Ana's screen.
The single word that appeared from that "line" was... 'him-' with
the hyphen.
I made the note at the bottom of the screen, so I would remember the
process... more than the content... and carried on with other
engagements.

Today, I know why.

Now you have to know that this whole thing blows my mind.

Happy to have lived longer than David Divizio, will the real David
Divizio please stand up?
