Re: [WSG] New CSS site
Michael I agree with your budgetary concerns. To fill this void, many universities are now merging their art departments with their media studies departments to offer advanced programs for graphic artists and web developers so that they can wear both hats [graphic designer-developer programmer]. I was the very first at the University at Buffalo (New York) to be conferred with their post-masters certificate of advanced studies (CAS) in New Media Design. This graduate program is all about conveying information visually on the Internet, media devices, and other venues. It covered the art and function with programming for 21st century. The new media artist is the designer of the next generation and they will be expected to wear several hats. Leo * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ *
Re: [WSG] Netscape versions
Hi Peter Yes, you wouldn't want to check in them all. Of course their are outliers, such as organisations with NS4 installed as the default browser, but other than those situations it comes down to a business and standards based (future business :D ) decision: Business: How long is it going to take you to get a website release passable to those who use older browsers versus the time it takes to mention an upgrade path to those users? It has been a lot easier for me to give a hint for someone to upgrade than hack code to make things work in applications that weren't designed for what you are trying to do. So scratch NS4.8 and less. (Added to the general confusion is that Netscape 4.8 was released in Aug 2002, about 18 months after NS6 was branched from Mozilla and about a year after NS7 was branched. Makes some sort of sense!) Business/Standards Netscape 6 was branched from an alpha release of Mozilla code in late 2000 or so -- it's buggy. Generally we wouldn't support an 0.6-0.9 release of Mozilla so we shouldn't concern ourselves with NS6 (but it does do most things better than 4). Still, scratch 6.x Standards: That leaves us with Netscape7, branched from Mozilla ~1.01. It's based on a stable release of Mozilla and adds some AIM and ICQ guff - we should support it (it's easy to support) even though we will most likely not see another NS browser. Some links: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/milestones.html http://www.mozilla.org/docs/mozilla-faq.html http://www.mozilla.org/roadmap.html HTH James BTW Sorry if this goes out of a thread, I am in between PC's at the mo. Re: Netscape versions By Universal Head /Mon 15 Mar 2004 at 05:28 PM/ This is interesting - but lots of people still use Navigator right? I guess I was asking the difference between build numbers too, because the Netscape site has versions 7.1, 7.0, 6.2, 6.1, 4.7, 4.8 4.6, 4.5, 4.0, 3.0 and 2.0. Obviously I don't want have to check in them all ... * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ *

[WSG] Load problem in IE
There's been a problem with a bit of load lag in IE from my latest project. In FF08, Safari, and NN7 it comes up without the lag. Is there something that IE doesn't like about my page, or is it just coughing over the CSS used? I've done many CSS sites in the past, but haven't run into this lag problem. This is also a new site, and I would appreciate any issues or comments about the accessibility or layout, etc. All pages are validated XHTML Trans and the CSS checks too :) The names of the sections/links may sound quite odd, but the client has requested those specific names (aka, can't change them). site: http://www.theward.net/psyc css: http://www.theward.net/psyc/css/general.css -- Ryan Christie [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.theward.net * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ *

[WSG] check site om Mac OS 9 and IE
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this site on a Mac OS 9 using IE as browser (no version specified): www.mardahl.dk It was tested in IE 6.0, Firefox 0.8, and Opera 7, but I don't have any Macs available for testing. Someone in one of my networks commented on this problem for her Mac, but felt she was a bother. I had a hard time convincing her I wanted to know more about the problem at her end. She didn't realize she could help me!! The site is being totally redone in a more traditional layout - this was just a fun experiment. I just want to know what the problem with the Mac is. I did look at quirksmode.org, but felt it was easier to ask here. I'm wondering if it is the layout causing trouble, or do I need some kind of hack? Re: [WSG] Load problem in IE
Ryan The site works well on the Mac and all links worked. It's nicely done; informational and functional. If I had a comment to the design, is would be that some of the pages have a lot of white space from lack of content. Since there are so many headings, why not propose to consolidate the links with little content on one informational page and thus making it easier for the users to find content. Just my thoughts. RE: [WSG] Overcoming Rejections
I've worked for companies that have websites that are so far afield of web standards that using something standard will break their web pages. This happens most often with web based content management systems. In those cases, it is best just to work with the company's standards rather than the real world standards. For smaller companies, the rejections are often reservations based on a lack of knowledge of current standards or a fear of the standards being too complex to work with for making simple updates. In that case it's a matter of educating the client. * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ *

Jim I think you're referring to my Flash business site, www.universalhead.com, rather than the css one www.cinema4duser.com. This is OT since it's not a css site, but the music doesn't come back on if you nav to another part of the site. Only if you refresh - which is unavoidable since the flash file is reloaded, but it should be unnecessary to refresh the site. As you say the sound is very ambient and can be quickly turned off if required. Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for the OT post, off the list now!
