I am having difficulty styling what should be a simple bulletted list in
Firefox and Opera. IE is strangely displaying what I want. Unfortunately
I can't upload the page (it does validate) but the CSS styles go
#detail-tile ul  {margin-top:1em;}
#detail-tile li   {list-style-type:circle; display:block;
list-style-position:inside;}

the html goes

Quisque diam enim, semper quis,
eleifend vestibulum,
euismod pulvinar, est

I have universally set styles for ul and li but changing these hasn't
made any difference. Is there something really simple that I am missing?

I'm a little slow, so it took me a while to figure out how to work it,
so for me it wasn't quite intuitive enough. This may not be the kind
of feedback you were looking for, but a simple "click to acess this
style" or whatever would be helpful.I started instead with the
top drop down. which of course doesn't make sense to start with
since it shows all the things you can add, not the existing
styles/id's. Usability wise, I'd reverse the 2 lines of menus. But
that's just me.

I also have to admit that I think in #000 & #fff, not color names, so
I had to look at what it was writing. An option to type in a #xx
would be something I'd use instead, but again, others might think this
totally dumb.

I liked the tool and will continue to play with it when in IE. I've
been using the toolbar itself since before it left beta (and some
features went away) when ever I have to look at things in IE, not my
browser of choice, but I'm there a lot.

Hope any of this was at all helpful.

Hi there,

You have a number of problems on a PC including on Firefox

Fixing the code errors is usually the best place to start About us doen't have a closing for instance, and
texttop isn't a valid attribute, and border and
alignment should be handled in the style sheet, not as img attributes,
and last there's a - which should be . These won't fix
your problems, but it's always a good start. The errors cascade too.

1) the lines in the left "menu" (#menu ul li) stretch past your
background into "main" in both IE 6 (win xp) and Fierfox 1.0 A
quick fix would be giving it a width of about 134px, but it's probably
not the best solution since you'll get variants.

2) In Firefox the "left" and "right" section aren't side by side.
They have space around them so appear indented into the "tellow"
background, and don't fit side by side, so "right" drops down. (by
the way - I recommend a better naming convention that's more
descriptive)

html>body .right {margin-right: 12px; } /*** IE doubles the margin on
the float. This sets
the margin to the correct width for
others ***/

 and the same for .left

is being read by firefox and giving the extra space and forcing the
sections to not display next to each other.

In IE6 - the sub titles 's "Ways to give " and "Applying for a
grant " are dropped down. I didn't look at what's causing this, just
wanted to let you know.

For login here and Donate now - there are several issues. SInce
they're wrapped in 's you are telling them to be on separate
lines. Removing those would allow them to be side by side if there
was enough space for them to be.Trying setting them in a with
a style for a smaller font - but wrap all of it in the single tag, not
two tags.

I hope some of this helps.

I suggest that you have a high-level menu for main (section
contents?) pages, and a fine-detail menu for each section.

There's one big site I maintain that used to have this arrangement,

RE: [WSG] Re: Flyout menu questions

2004-11-08 Thread Pringle, Ron
Thanks all for your responses. I left off tackling the final navigation til
last because I knew it was going to be an issue that needs a lot of thought.

My current thinking, after reviewing the responses, is to break the
navigation down by each section. If I make the nav section an editable part
of my master template and use code snippets for the menu and submenu code, I
should still be able to easily update the site without too many problems.

The main issue there will be trying to balance easy access to nested
information without frustrating the user with unusable navigation. The
city's website is so dense and information-rich, it seems overwhelming to me
at times.

I do provide breadcrumbs at the top of the main content as a visual marker
for where the user is in the site, but will probably also implement the
suggestion of a visual marker for sub-menu items, depending on the sort of
menu I ultimately use.

I think I will code up a variety of test nav systems and run them by you all
again, as well as some non-design, average users.

Thanks for the invaluable feedback!

Ron

Hi Ron,

I know this isn't exactly what you were looking for, but I went to do a
quick navigation test via keyboard and found that I couldn't. You should
remove the onkeypress redundancy for your style sheet switcher. As it
stands, I can't tab past the stylesheet switcher because of the onkeypress
handler.

In many browsers onkeypress can break keyboard navigation - certainly an
unintended consequence - where trying to help accessibility actually hinders
it. Onclick is a misnomer, at least the way it has been implemented in
browsers. It actually behaves more like onactivate, so onclick will be just
fine for keyboard users as well.

Hope this helps...
Best regards,
Derek.

I think it's to difficult to use for many visitors, flyouts are not so
easy to handle for everybody!

If you make "Aldermans office" and so on clickable, and point the links
to simple menu-pages with the sub-choices, it would be a good
alternative for users that have trouble with the flyouts. -- I do it
this way myself, creating the submenus dynamically with Php.

I think that's a big flaw in those menus in particular, that you don't
'remember' where you are after you've clicked on a link. What I've done is
either use breadcrumbs to show location, OR use a common piece of code for
the navigation that you can use to update the link images to reflect where
you are (to "stick", essentially).

Understand that, but you might end up being happier if you replaced the
template with some common code include navigation so you have more
control.

I think the site looks great, but I prefer some sort of visual indicator
on the individual menu items to indicate that there is additional content

especially on small screen real estate. My biggest problem with it is the
depth of the submenus, how easy it is to slip off a menu 3 layers deep and
lose your place and the fact that the menus don't remain visible for a few
seconds after mousing off them.
I'm looking for a review of the navigation along with opinions and
suggestions, within the following constraints:
1. This site is templated via a single master template in DW. I would prefer
NOT to have to use more than the one template for the site, as it will
exponentially increase my workload with each additional section/template.
2. I've looked at the vertically expanding/collapsing menu systems, and have
pretty much ruled them out for use on my site for a variety of reasons.
Ideas, criticisms, suggestions and opinions welcomed.
http://www.aurora-il.org/testsite/index.htm
Only the first 3 menu items in the vertical nav have been flushed out.
Regards,
Ron

[WSG] Flyout menu questions

2004-11-08 Thread Pringle, Ron
Hello all-

I am in the process of redeveloping a large, content heavy municipal site.
There is an extraordinarily large amount of information on the current site,
and a large number of departments that need to be represented in the
navigation.

I've used the Son Of Suckerfish code to build out a flyout menu system.
Works great, looks nice. However, some of the menus get as many as five
layers deep. I'm concerned about usability (by regular and impaired users),
especially on small screen real estate. My biggest problem with it is the
depth of the submenus, how easy it is to slip off a menu 3 layers deep and
lose your place and the fact that the menus don't remain visible for a few
seconds after mousing off them.

I'm looking for a review of the navigation along with opinions and

2. I've looked at the vertically expanding/collapsing menu systems, and have

[WSG] level boxes

2004-11-08 Thread blueyonder
Hi
I've done this site and having a couple of problems. The 2 boxes Making
a donation and Applying for a grant are supposed to be side by side but
I can't seem to get them to do this. I copied the code from a similar
layout on positioneverything website, any ideas?

http://www.apperleydesign.co.uk/cdf/cdf.css
Also I have created it on a mac so it could look like a dogs dinner on
PC IE!

Thanks

Does your IE have the font resizer set to something smaller than medium?

I did have lots of trouble with the various sizes when starting out with
ems, I found

http://www.thenoodleincident.com/tutorials/typography/incremental_differences.html
to be a lot of help. Using the ideas from here I generally size the text
at 76% for the body then adjust the other rules as necessary. Its not
exact but its pretty close.

I hope this is some help.

[WSG] Fonts size problem

2004-11-08 Thread Javier

Hi All

I've problems with font sizes.

I'm developing a web page using "em" to define font sizes. When I see the
page in Firefox or Mozilla, size it's ok for me. But when I see the same
page with IE, fonts appear so small...

How could I make fonts appear in the same size (or at least, something
similar) in IE and Firefox ?

Thanks in advance

Javier
