[WSG] Apply ALT tag to background image?

2008-03-24 Thread Kristine Cummins
I've got a background graphic designated in my style sheet - is there a way
to apply an alt and/or title tag to that or would I need to just not make it
a background image? My intuition is the latter - but just if there is a
slight chance..

No, there is no way to apply ALT to the background images, only for IMG tags.

Re: [WSG] Apply ALT tag to background image?

2008-03-24 Thread Thomas Thomassen
You can only apply the alt attribute to img elements. If you need to provide
an alt attribute to a CSS background image then the background image should
instead be an img element.

Use the img element for images related to the content and keep all images
related to layout in your CSS.

Backgrounds are decorative and do not need alt *attributes*. Therefore
CSS does not have a way of providing alternate text.

If it is part of the content and should be seen by search engine bots
and screen readers, it should be put in your (X)HTML.

You can only apply the alt attribute to img elements.

13.8 How to specify alternate text [1]
The alt attribute must be specified for the IMG and AREA elements. It is
optional for the INPUT and APPLET elements.

i would suggest allowing the user to stop the music if they so
choose. not everybody likes the same music or song, so he could lose
many visitors because of the continuous track with no way to stop it.
on the other hand a visitor could mute the sound.

I would also make sure a way of turning the music off is immediately
apparent. Nothing is more annoying than having to look all over to find off
button

Looks like someone borrowed a thread name? lol

[WSG] Safari 3.1 OSX Safari 3.1 Windows

2008-03-24 Thread James Hunter
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me or could point me to a reference of
the differences in web page rendering between operating systems for Safari
3.1

Ideally I'd like to test for cross browser rendering issues on a Windows
platform.

Are there significant differences in the way a web page is interpreted /
rendered between Safari 3.1 OSX and Safari 3.1 Windows?

Thanks in advance,

James Hunter

Re: [WSG] Apply ALT tag to background image?

2008-03-24 Thread Stuart Foulstone
Hi,

If it's a CSS background image then it's not content and doesn't have an
alt attribute.

(The non-preferred alternative is to to put it in an img tag with alt=)

If it IS content, it should be in an image tag rather than CSS background
image, with the alt attribute describing the content of the image (or its
function if that's more appropriate).

[WSG] The correct way of placing a swf file into a XHTML webpage

2008-03-24 Thread Dory
Hello,

I am currently working on a site that has a small flash file for decorative
purposes. I inherited the site and want to make it web standards compliant.
The problem: the XHTML code in the site is using the embed tag for the
flash. Is there a way to place swf files into a XHTML webpage that will
allow the page to validate? (I believe the embed tag has been deprecated.)

Any links to references would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Dory Ptak

Hi Dory,

You can use '*object*' tag for embedding flash files.

use javascript to insert the flash, which will also auto activate the
flash in IE and do some flash player detection

something like swfobject would do the trick
