[WSG] Web dev or design certificates
Every once in a while I'll have a student ask if there are any global or national web design or web dev certificate programs that are worth more than the paper they are printed on. I havn't even viewed the Opera certs. but I 'think' they do something similar. I also know that PPK is doing something to get front end engineers recognized. He is developing a cert. programme or something. As for PHP you can do the Zend Certified Engineer exam. Web Development is a fast changing subject and there are many branches to it. I doubt any certification would be 'in date' for long. Adobe has a cert http://www.adobe.com/support/certification/ace.html I think that would be a good project to have a Web Standards certification and force people to update every few years. Be great to have the W3C run it and test peoples standards knowledge. I agree on the markup. But I think that only 10-20% of all sites nowdays on the internet are designed to standards. And I do agree with Michael that some kind of certification needs to be considered for proper standards-based design. The CIW certification actually stresses that. The CIW organization also holds an annual conference in Destin, FL on standards-based web developmentand if you've done web design/development for a while, it's easy to get through those exams. I found that self-paced study CDs are very nice. They cover a lot of Accessibility and Usability staff, and Standards, but you as a designer must be always on the lookout of the new "trends"... yes, validation sometimes might return "unserious" errors - if one tag is not closed, for example, then the rest will not validate and instead of 1 there will be 21 and etc. I didn't see anything Really horrible on the site to be instantly turned away from it.But I also suspect that in case of the larger company web-site- it's not only the designers' fault, but of those who eventually "maintain" the site and "contribute" to the site. So the site can become really ugly. I myself work in an insurance company and currently "struggle" for standardization (pretty much on my own :( ), and know that when you work with a lot of people, it CAN get really complex. And who knows - maybe they use some kind of CMS, which will make things even worse, like in our case.Besides, my boss recommended this certification to me... but I don't know.
