Re: [WSG] Site Review Please - www.SalmonRecipes.Net
Hello David, Over site impression cool its well structured and well designed. Especially I liked color scheme of the site. Some Suggestions: Somehow I am missing link to HOME Page. My observation is majority of people expect to see a Home link. It's not enough that logo is a link to homepage, as many people will not know this. Back to Top link well, I really dont know why, but I personally prefer to have a Back to Top link on a long page. I dont see Accessibility Statement on website or I missed one! Since the site can be operated by keyboard shortcuts (or screen reader compatible? Not sure) its nice idea to have accessibility statement. What do you think? One suggestion I found that lots of links are redirected to different websites. For e.g. Buy Salmon Ardtaraig Fine Foods link. I would suggest to mentioned that link is opening new website or you can indicate the same by simply changing the arrow image in front of the image lota depends on designer. Hmmm I think these suggestions make sense. Please let me know what do you think. Thanks. Hi David, I would really appreciate your comments about our recently redeveloped http://www.salmonrecipes.net/ site. Please do not be scared to be critical. I'm keen to improve the site in any way possible, so please let me know what you think we could do better. Beautiful site. Um, not so beautiful banner ad. Is it possible to do something about that? FYI, I'm not convinced that the search functionality is as usable as it could be - I'd appreciate your ideas and opinions about this matter. (However, I'll also understand if this usability issue is maybe outwith the scope of this list). On the home page, the link to advanced search has a click here thing, which is not very elegant. How about making the Advanced Search text itself a link, and removing the following description? Advanced Search is a fairly common feature so your users most probably will not have a problem with it. cheers, Prabhath http://nidahas.com ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

On Tue, 2005-08-02 at 11:46 +0100, David Nicol wrote: I would really appreciate your comments about our recently redeveloped http://www.salmonrecipes.net/ site. Just quickly... wow. I didn't know a site about fish could look so good :P Except for the flickery monstrosity at the top (banner ad thing) that wrecks the effect somewhat, of course... can anything be done about that? For your Buy Recipe Books thing, you should perhaps consider doing your images differently - either by using more meaningful ALT text (the cover of ...title... rather than book) or an empty ALT value or (best option in my mind) change your markup a little bit so that under the Buy Recipe Books H1 there is an unordered list, with the book image set as a background (and indent the content with padding). It's semantically defensible (it's a list of books you can buy), and means you lose the probably purely aesthetic images of book covers from your markup. I'd also maybe reconsider your use of H1, but that's a purely personal thing and I can't really argue the point too much! The only other gripe I had was with your Site Map // About Us // Terms and Conditions // Disclaimer // Privacy Policy // Credits line at the bottom of the page... it really should be in a list. You can recreate the slashes with a background image and special first class or ID for the first element in the list... there's also other ways to do it, but I imagine that must be something screen reader users would get sick of quickly: site map slash slash about us slash slash... (presuming that's how it works?) Aside from those fairly minor things, the markup is great quality and the design is similarly alluring (and a nifty logo, if you did that!). Prabhath, Thanks for your thoughts about the Advanced Search - I totally agree that we need to improve this element. We'll experiment with some ideas. Regarding the banner, we will be selling this space again soon. I'm not sure if it would be sensible to retain a 'veto' on the banner designs submitted by advertisers, but we should certainly think about this. Joshua, I really appreciate your detailed comments. We will certainly re-think the coding for the recipe books element, and I'll also do work on the links in the footer. Beautiful! It's just that the banner ad is rather jarring in its present location. Anything you can do about that? When I see salmonrecipes.com with the ad right next to it, it's a bit confusing. Others have given you just the input I would have given. Obviously you put a lot of thought into this design. Great job! Re: [WSG] Site Review Please
Hi Levi, Just looking through the list and saw that you didn't get many replies, so I thought I'd have a shot. You might not have got much of an answer because there's not much to say. My first impression is that there's not much on the site to draw me in or make me want to come back, that may or may not be a problem since the site is catering to your 'invitation only' audience. Nevertheless, if you were trying to interest me it didn't work (I'm still not sure who the site is for or what it's about). I did what i usually do which is run the site through the good ol' validator http://validator.w3.org/ which turned up a few (OK, 9) easily fixed errors which you might want to sort out. A quick squiz at the source code revealed that you're using inline CSS. You may want to move these styles to an external stylesheet, which you will save on download time. That's about it. Hi Levi, Looks stable in Safari 1.2.4 and Mac/Firefox but the news inner containers are missing their backgrounds in Mac/IE5.2.8. I can send screenshots offlist if needed. The other comments are accessibility ones so take them as you wish - they may not be part of the mission for this site's audience. 1. The continuous scrolling animated text is very irritating and makes it hard to read the text on the page - the eye is constantly being distracted. This may not matter to the target audience coming to your site, but for people with reading difficulties, this could present an accessibility barrier. It could also be considered a usability issue. If it irritates people, and they find it distracting, then it may be worth addressing. 2. If people do not have flash, do they have any way of navigating the site at all? If accessibility to a wider audience is considered important (and from the topic this may not be the case) then a non-flash navigation option might be worthwhile. 3. the flash text is small and hard to read. While you have done a great job of allowing the content to scale, and maintain layout consistency, these small navigation buttons remain extremely small. This could have an impact on users with even mild vision impairment. 4. Finally, again this may be irrelevant for this site, it doesn't work well on a text-browser or screen reader. You get the following information: sorry dude, your browser doesn't support Iframes. sorry dude, your browser doesn't support Iframes. image image image image image image image If nothing else, a null or blank alt attribute would be better than an alt attribute with image, as this wouldn't be read out aloud to screen reader users. 2c Russ No replied after 13 days... yeesh. Looks stable in Safari 1.2.4 and Mac/Firefox but the news inner containers are missing their backgrounds in Mac/IE5.2.8. I can send screenshots offlist if needed. hmm. I dont know that screenshots will be needed, since I can pretty much assume what you are talking about and know what it looks like. The question is, why? My best guess is that I have a line break in my code at a weird moment to make it more readable for me while getting around an IE issue: div class=ContentWrapper div [snip]div [snip][snip]/div/divdiv style=background-image:url('images/content-bg.gif')[snip] the new line between the div and the the style=... might be what is causing the issues in the Mac/IE5. I've gotten rid of the newline and any tabs and reuploaded the files for the news section. Could you check and see if that fixed the issue (if it doesn't, I wont keep asking, dont worry)? The other comments are accessibility ones so take them as you wish - they may not be part of the mission for this site's audience. For the most part, because of the target audience for such a site, accessibility has taken a back seat to design and wow factor. But the comments are still welcomed and noted, thankyou. At somepoint, yes, that whole 'plot of land' will be redone, it was a quick fix job so the site could be put up sooner. I haven't found it distracting, but I know it can become so very easily, and it should be address when I am not so busy with other priorities. 2. If people do not have flash, do they have any way of navigating the site at all? If accessibility to a wider audience is considered important (and from the topic this may not be the case) then a non-flash navigation option might be worthwhile. Is there a way to provide non-flash content if and only if flash is not available for that user? like the noframe tag for frames? I actually do have some images with blank alt attributes, but just as many with image, as you've noted (this inconsistency was through using old code from different sites I've previously made). It does sound worthwhile to change those image ones to blank. Only takes 20 seconds to do anyway. Thanks. The noframe message was from... sheesh.. 4 or more years ago at least. I should have changed the message to a more useful and helpful one long long ago. Thanks for the helpful reply! -Levi 2c Russ No replied after 13 days... yeesh. [WSG] Site Review Please
Howdy, I've been coming signed up only a few weeks here and have read only two dozen or so topics, mainly because I've been working on a new site and have had midterms to study for (UCF student in Orlando). The site was completed on the 11th though I am still working on backend PHP functionality. If some of you professionals could run it through the gauntlet, that would probably helpful to me (I find it hard to get rid of the if they don't use IE6.x or Firefox, screw them anyway, my sites aren't selling anything mentality). Two pages wont show up as XHTML Transitional complaint because they are using Flash (I've only seen one solution to making compliant html flash implementation and I disliked the drawbacks of not being able to inform the user to upgrade their Flash if they are using an old version). Thanks for any replies. http://ffxi.anime-madness.com ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

Try turning off images in FFox, the text becomes unreadable - far too little contrast, and because you have the Hn tags hidden there are no headings. Mind you, that being said, it is better than some of the Zengarden designs in this respect. It also loads quicker than several of the Zengarden pages. It's silly, as it doesn't need that width. Ahhh thanks, Rob! I love this group. You stare at something for hours and try every trick in the book and the solution is often so simple yet you fail to see it because you're practically blind at the end of all those hours. I used to have a wider bottom image and totally forgot I changed the dimensions. Thanks for saving my time - no more horizontal scroll bar - Yay! [WSG] Site Review Please! ZenGarden Submission ...
Hi All Happy New Year! I am working on my first CSS Zen Garden submission and I was wondering if you good folks might like to check it out for me and offer any feedback on the design or code. It can be viewed at www.manisheriar.com/zengarden I have checked it in FireFox, IE, Mozilla, and Netscape on the PC. Thanks!!! Re: [WSG] Site Review Please! ZenGarden Submission ...
Nice! :) However, I do get a horizontal scrollbar in FF1.0 and the tiling pattern for the side of the content pane doesn't match up with the top, try adjusting your background-position:; property to resolve this HTH -David R Thank for your input, David! Do you have any suggestions for getting rid of the horizontal scroll? I see it in FF too and I dont like it but cant quite figure out how to make it disappear. Also, the bg image is tiling perfectly for me in FF1.0 and in the other browsers I've checked in, so I'm not sure how to tackle that one. Would you mind sending me a screenshot offline? Anyone else having problems with the tiling? Thanks! [WSG] site review please (esigma)
Hi there, this is my first post to the list after lurking for a bit now. i've put on my extra thick skin today in preparation for asking for your feedback on a site. i created the templates and css based off their design and the dev team took it from there. we have already received some feedback regarding increasing the main font size and that will be corrected soon. url: http://www.esigma.com Any feedback, suggestions etc are greatly appreciated! cheers ~~ maggie galbraith ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **
Re: [WSG] site review please (esigma)
Maggie, Looks good here, on Safari 1.2.4. (I'm talking about one of the inside pages, servicehosting.jsp in particular.) As you say, some people will probably find difficulty with the type size. As far as the code is concerned, you might want to improve it by making more use of inheritance. For example, in the right hand column #sidebar-b, you have a number of elements: #esigmaresources (which contains a ul.portlet, the first li of which has the class .title), a .ruready div class which contains only an img, another div class .portletContainer with a ul.portlet, and so on. You could simplify this as follows. For #esigmaresources, instead of an extra class for portlet, change your css to read: #esigmaresources ul { etc } Use an h for the first li item, and style that. ( #esigmaresources ul li h2 { } ) Get rid of the ruready class and div, and use #sidebar img instead. Get rid of the portletcontainer class and div and use #sidebar-b ul instead. You get my drift? Use the cascading property of stylesheets as much as you can. All the best. -Hugh Todd this is my first post to the list after lurking for a bit now. i've put on my extra thick skin today in preparation for asking for your feedback on a site. i created the templates and css based off their design and the dev team took it from there. we have already received some feedback regarding increasing the main font size and that will be corrected soon. url: http://www.esigma.com Any feedback, suggestions etc are greatly appreciated! ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

In addition to Hugh's relevant comments, I notice that you're making using of nbsp; and br / extensively as layout/presentation tools. Using CSS to set margins/padding where required is really a better way to go... You also use nbsp; as a separator for the links in your text nav at the foot of each page; not good for accessibilty. Why not recode this menu as a list? It is one, after all... I like the design; I'm a sucker for a clean look and some whitespace on a page. But you could make your center column liquid - that way your layout will still work in smaller browser sizes (800px). Fixed width and centered creates an annoying horizontal scroll at anything less than 1024px wide... HTH N ___ Omnivision.
