It specifies the style sheet language (e.g. CSS or JSSS) for inline style 
**attributes**.

I don't know of any browser which will fail to error recover (assuming you are 
using CSS) if you don't specify it. 

That said, you are better off not using inline style attributes in the first 
place (since they mean not getting the number one benefit of CSS[1])

Sorry if this is obvious, but could someone explain to me the value of 
using:




In the  section of a page. I can't grasp:

a) what exactly it does,
b) what is 'missing' if it isn't there?
