Title: Re: [wsjt-devel] Updating the WSJT-X User Guide; OS X sample rate

Hello Joe,

yes, unfortunately ...

iMac OSX 10.13.3 connected via usb to an IC-7300

port speed is 4800 Baud and the sampling had to be set to 44100,
if it is set to 48000 the OSX will switch after two or three TX
cycles to the internal speakers. Since set to 44100 the iMac works
with 1.8 GA without problems.
---
Had a discussion with another Ham, he insisted to use the 1.8 rc3
because the 1.8 GA 'does not work' with his setup. rc3 was no problem.
Apparently due the port speed of 38400 to a 'micro Keyer II' interface
and Windows. Could not convince the guy to change the port speed
- no, why should I, if rc3 is working for me and the GA hangs - was
his answer... ;-( Sorry, I have no more info about this.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Updating the WSJT-X User Guide; OS X sample rate

2018-02-08 Thread George J Molnar
Joe,

I have not experienced this issue using virtual audio cables (Flex 6000-series
DAX support) running at 48k. However, using an external USB sound card, the
problem does intermittently rear its head. Am not sure if the 44.1k “fix” is
anecdotal or not, or if it covers all versions of MacOS. It does appear to have
worked for several people.

Suggest recommending the 48k rate, while allowing that, “in the event of
unexpected audio issues” a 44.1k rate may be helpful to try.

Hi Joe,

this is only necessary for certain Mac hardware, it seems to be a defect
either in the USB hardware or the drivers for it. Many Mac users have no
problem using the audio sample rate at 48000 Hz.

Perhaps an FAQ entry, "If you are using macOS with an external audio
device and find that Tx audio spontaneously switches to the motherboard
sound device after a few transmission; try setting the sample rate in
the Audio MIDI Setup Utility to 44100 Hz rather than the recommended
48000 Hz".

[wsjt-devel] Updating the WSJT-X User Guide; OS X sample rate

2018-02-08 Thread Joe Taylor

Hi all,

In preparation for an upcoming release candidate of WSJT-X v1.9.0, I am
updating the WSJT-X User Guide. If you are aware of anything that needs
work in the User Guide, please post a message here or otherwise let me know.

Here's a specific question for Mac users. In Section 3.3 we currently
say this:

"Use the Mac’s Audio MIDI Setup utility to configure your sound card for
48000 Hz, two-channel, 16-bit format."

But several Mac users have reported losing audio unless they set the
sample rate to 44100 Hz. Is this always the case with OS X? Should
this instruction be changed?
