Re: [Xastir] Good serial port comm program for linux
Have a look at the permissions on your ports... i.e. j...@ns1:/$ cd /dev j...@ns1:/dev$ ls -al /dev/ttyS? crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 64 2009-03-20 08:53 /dev/ttyS0 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 65 2009-03-15 21:23 /dev/ttyS1 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 66 2009-03-14 10:53 /dev/ttyS2 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 67 2009-03-14 10:53 /dev/ttyS3 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 68 2009-03-14 10:53 /dev/ttyS4 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 69 2009-03-20 08:48 /dev/ttyS5 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 70 2009-03-18 22:38 /dev/ttyS6 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 71 2009-03-14 11:18 /dev/ttyS7 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 72 2009-03-14 10:53 /dev/ttyS8 crw-rw 1 root dialout 4, 73 2009-03-14 10:53 /dev/ttyS9 j...@ns1:/dev$ Above, all the ports are owned by user root and group dialout. I'm running ubuntu here, so I simply did sudo adduser j0n dialout to add the user 'j0n' to the dialout group John On 20 Mar 2009, at 04:43, Dale Seaburg wrote: OK guys, I'm getting thoroughly frustrated with minicom. Re: [Xastir] Good serial port comm program for linux
Hi Dale, I had all sorts of trouble getting a serial program to work in Mandriva. I finished up with Tiny Serial - which while being very basic - did the job that I wanted and was easy to set up. 73 Philip VK4HPW Dale Seaburg wrote: OK guys, I'm getting thoroughly frustrated with minicom. [Xastir] New OSx user
Hello Jason All, After years of using MS-Windows, I have just made the change to mac and now have a new iMac. Although I will continue running Xastir on my linux box as the main instance, I would like to get Xastir running on my new iMac and connect it to the server port of my linux Xastir. My question is which method to use to install Xastir on OS-X Leopard? I have seen options using macports and fink and now building packages from source. I have installed X11 and xcode tools and grabbed the latest xastir source via cvs. Now I guess I need at least lesstif and shapelib. I tried fink, but I get an error installing lesstif. Haven't given macports a try, but from the recent comments, I will have some problems. So, maybe install lesstif from source. Any pointers where to start? Thanks, Mike Fenske VE7MKF Jason KG4WSV wrote: Keith, I haven't had time to chase this, but it is high on my list to get working, as 2 of my 3 macs are running leopard now. (The other one is held back because xastir works!) I prefer to build from source instead of using fink or macports due to some problems I had in the past. Judging from some recent comments, a few problems still exist. Once we get 6 (!) balloon flights out of the way in the next couple of weeks, I can give this a bit higher priority. -Jason kg4wsv ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir

Is there a free vmware player for OS X? I think you have to buy Fusion (what they call VMware workstation for the Mac), but I don't know the price. The point to that is the xubuntu VM works just fine on an intel mac. -Jason kg4wsv ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir

I use Parallels but prefer to stay in OS X vs. going to Ubuntu which runs just fine on my machine. On Mar 20, 2009, at 10:25 AM, Jason KG4WSV wrote: Is there a free vmware player for OS X? Yes the xM VirtualBox by Sun is free and I ran seven different distro of Linux on it. You can touch the background and switch back and forth between OS X and Linux It also runs Windows if you wish. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.10 on it in the background. You can download it at: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32363 Jeff VE7THZ On 20-Mar-09, at 08:25 , Jason KG4WSV wrote: Is there a free vmware player for OS X? I don't know if it is related but I'm also having trouble getting 1.9.5 to run on my PPC Mac Mini (Tiger using LessTif from MacPorts). It compiles without problems, but when I try to run it I get Error: Couldn't find per display information and the window doesn't open. 1.9.4 still works just fine (I have upgraded many of the MacPorts- installed programs since I compiled that version). So the question begs, how do I bypass the LessTif Installed by MacPorts (I can always uninstall it) reinstall LessTif some other way and maybe then Xastir will compile and run correctly. Does this seem like the thing I should do? I just don't know how to install LessTif without MacPorts. Thanks to everyone who are now coming to my rescue. I too have several balloon flights this summer and Xastir has always been there for me. As suggested, I made myself a member of the dialout group. I also made an attempt to do something similar to the kiss-off.pl script (called it kiss-on.pl). But, the results were inconsistent. I would bring up xastir (to establish the port's baudrate), STOP the /dev/ttyS0 device, execute the kiss-on.pl script in a terminal window, then START the /dev/ttyS0 device in xastir. About half the time it would work. If minicom had a means of executing a script upon being started, then I might have shortened my time to a solution. Gee, you asked for help with a terminal program, when what you really wanted was a way to script a terminal session to initialize your TNC.
