Tom,
I'm coming to realize that! Don't think I'm quite ready to build just
yet... It's been too long. Maybe when I'm back up to speed---  and have a

I would guess the .desktop goes in the root of you home directory (/home/UID). 
Don't know about the icon. You could make one :)

You will need to log out and log in again in order to have the new group
membership take effect.

*sudo adduser myusername dialout*
got the expected response but still have to start xastir as root *sudo
xastir* to start the serial port.

It's been a long day so I'll look at it tomorrow. Thanks all for you help,
at least I know the problem, if not the answer :-)
