Re: [Xastir] Some Pocket Chip Success
Hey, I ordered a Pocket CHIP last summer for the heck of it and it arrived last week. Next Thing Co. After getting through some issuesof flashing the thing with the 4.4 GUI C.H.I.P. Flasher I got Xastir through apt-get. It's a Debian Jessie distro and the 4.4 and 4.3 gui'swith Gnome run on the Pocket CHIP. Just some issues with window size positions but I found putting the taskbar at the bottom of the screenworks better. I had a situation when some of Xastir screens had to be repositioned and I couldn't get 'em closed. I used the online OSM maps and APRS-IS. It's not bad. I'm going to try to pair with a B/T GPS to get the local position in and either aMobilinkd, AP510 or an EggFinder NMEA receiver for APRS or remote monitoring tracking. One kicker is I had to use a standard USB or Rf USB mouse to get it going but was able to then pair a B/T mouse if I wanted to use it. If I could configure the screens to be "draggable" with a mouse so I can get at some of the Xastir menus it would be nicer but I've just started outwith it. I'll have to see if there's enough room to use some of the Tiger or Cloudmade maps of where I live. B/T I think will work o.k. for APRS and NMEA as I was able to get an old Royaltek B/T GPS paired and after I apt-get minicom, the strings weredisplayed beautifully in a terminal. Even though the screen is small, Xastir fills the whole thing and it's more usable than I though it would be. Re: [Xastir] Maps?
We "needs" something ready made that neophytes and the geographically, academically impaired can just drop in a directoryre-index and then go. I still have around some of the old Tiger 2006 and Cloudmade maps from 2008 from mine and surrounding states. It's just too derned easy to have a drop-in solution.I believe that's what keeps the program from being used by more folks. I probably would have stayed away from the program yearsago if it weren't for the ready-made solutions available at the time. The Xastir compiling scripts were really great to get all the bits and pieces into the program so one could experiment.Kurt KC9LDH ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://xastir.org/mailman/listinfo/xastir
Re: [Xastir] Maps?
On the topic of pretty offline maps, I have followed online directions to setup my own local OSM tile server and then created an xastir mapfile to point to localhost. It's not trivial, but if you are comfortable with basic system administration and building codes it is doable. - Jason On Fri, Jul 15, 2016 at 11:24 AM Curt Millswrote: > On Fri, Jul 15, 2016 at 8:54 AM, David Ranch wrote: > > > > > I've never used any of this dbfawk capability before but beyond it's > > offline ability, I've always been curious on it's performance benefits, > > maybe it's better looking than OSM, etc. Could you post some screen > > captures of what things look like on your tuned dbfawk setup with a zoom > of > > 128 compared to say Online/OSM_tiled_mapquest.geo (works well but always > > strikes me as a bit "dark". > > > > Maybe when you have a good example of what can be done with dbfawk, you > > can check it into Git and I can load it in to check it out? No point in sending an image 'cuz you'd be disappointed compared to raster maps as far as "pretty". Xastir has ESRI Shapefile capability built-in. This gives you vector maps with one-pixel-wide all-black lines, displayed at all zoom levels. To change the display of these lines so they are wider based on certain parameters (number of lanes perhaps, rivers versus creeks perhaps), to change the colors of objects, or to make some things visible at some zoom levels but not at others, you use dbfawk files to do this. Re: [Xastir] Maps?
Hey Curt, I've never used any of this dbfawk capability before but beyond it's offline ability, I've always been curious on it's performance benefits, maybe it's better looking than OSM, etc. Could you post some screen captures of what things look like on your tuned dbfawk setup with a zoom of 128 compared to say Online/OSM_tiled_mapquest.geo (works well but always strikes me as a bit "dark". Maybe when you have a good example of what can be done with dbfawk, you can check it into Git and I can load it in to check it out? Though I've never used this feature, my Xastir build is fully featured so it "should" work. Gives you another offline map option for OSM maps. The initial support for geofabrik.de maps in Xastir's dbfawk files is for "roads" and "waterways". Xastir displays "buildings", "landuse", "natural", and "railways" as well, but there aren't any dbfawk files for them yet so no labels, changes on zoom level, colors etc for those. As far as "places" and "points": Without labels they are useless. What the maps are missing: Lakes and land masses. Here's what I did to make a nice map stackup with offline maps: *) Use the county Shapefile set from the weather alerts as the land mass. In my case "c_05ap16". I just made a link from my map directory back to the "/usr/local/share/xastir/Counties" directory where the weather alert maps reside, then reindexed maps and those files show up in the Map Chooser. *) Use "lk17de98" for the lakes. Don't remember where I got it but I have it in maps/World/USA/ directory along with a bunch of USA-wide maps. *) Enable "buildings", "landuse", "roadways", "roads", and "waterways" from the geofabrik.de maps *) Click on Map Chooser->Properties. Set layer for "lk17de98.shp" to 999 and for "c_05ap16" to 998. This makes the land get drawn first, then the lakes, then the geofabrik.de maps. *) Map -> Configure -> Background Color -> Navy Blue Now you'll see ocean with land masses drawn on top, lakes on top of that, then the other features drawn on top of that. Looks good and pans/zooms fast 'cuz they're all vector maps. There's a lot that can be (and should be) done yet with the dbfawk files for geofabrik.de maps. I did the minimum tweaks to make them start working in Xastir. Most of the lines in there are original lines from the files I copied to make them, so those lines don't apply to the geofabrik.de maps. -- Curt, WE7U http://we7u.wetnet.net http://www.sarguydigital.com ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://xastir.org/mailman/listinfo/xastir
