Hi David! I'm using a USB keyboard.

left-click-off as under linux. I did not have to turn on Num-Lock

Hi Dale! I don't have that particular feature; I get right-click-on,
left-click-off.

Finally, here are some thoughts that I have put off writing about until
now. I really like this setup. That is such good news about the
upgraded Cygwin. And, indeed it works slick for xastir.

I had installed VirtualBox, but was less than satisfied with it. It was
when I saw the blurb about the upgraded Cygwin, that I gave it a shot
and am so glad I did. The main impetus of my effort was to get other
local hams going with xastir, rather than some other PC-centric APRS
client, but lessen the issues of working with *nix.

 Consider me a satisfied customer.

I concur! I spent four years as a professional software developer, and in
my opinion the future belongs to software that will run on any platform.
XASTIR fills the bill nicely as far as I'm concerned. I thought about
trying other Windows APRS software, but the app with the most market share
hasn't been maintained since the author's key fell silent in 2004, and the
app seems to require purchasing expensive mapping software that I've never
heard of to make it work. (Thanks but no thanks, UI-View32.) XASTIR's
installation procedure for Windows is clunky, but I understand why. If I
had more time available I would volunteer to streamline the installation
procedure for Windows users.

Considering that XASTIR's authors are all busy people improving and
maintaining the software in their free time for nothing, it really is
excellent software. Bravo! And Bravo to all the people who offer
friendly advice on the reflector!

[Xastir] work-around for right-click problem under Cygwin

2010-02-10 Thread Rob Locher W7GH

Hi All,

I recently had a problem with XASTIR 1.9.7 installed on Cygwin. At first
everything worked fine, but soon I had an intermittent problem: if I
right-clicked on an icon, often the mouse pointer would change from an
arrow pointing northwest to an arrow pointing northeast, and then the
program would be completely unresponsive to mouse or keyboard input. The
same would apply for the xterm that launched XASTIR, until XASTIR was
killed by clicking the Windows red X in the upper-right corner.

I discovered a work-around. The purpose of this email is to document the
work-around in case someone else has the same problem in the future. The
work-around is to launch XASTIR with Num Lock on. Then when I right-click
on an icon in XASTIR I get the familiar warning to turn off Caps Lock, Num
Lock, and Scroll Lock. Then when I turn off Num Lock everything works
fine.

Thanks to all who took the time to consider my problem. And thanks to all
who wrote and who maintain XASTIR. What a cool program!

[Xastir] Cygwin problem, probably routine

2010-02-04 Thread Rob Locher W7GH

Hello All,

I'm very pleased to have recently installed XASTIR on Cygwin here. (I
installed Cygwin for the purpose of running XASTIR. I went the Cygwin
route because I'm considering dabbling with other Linux apps on Cygwin.)
However I've run into a vexing problem: suddenly if I right-click on the
map, the mouse pointer changes from an arrow pointing northwest to an
arrow pointing northeast, and then XASTIR refuses to respond to any
further mouse clicks or keyboard keys. And it's not just XASTIR; xterm
doesn't respond either. All I can do is kill XASTIR and xterm the Windows
way (the big red X in the upper-right corner) and stop the Cygwin/X Server
by right-clicking the tray icon and clicking Exit.

As far as I know I haven't changed anything in my Cygwin environment since
installing XASTIR. I think I must be doing something wrong. Does anyone
have any clue, or should I ask on one of the Cygwin lists?

Re: [Xastir] Cygwin problem, probably routine

2010-02-04 Thread Rob Locher W7GH
Hi Curt and David, and thank you for venturing to answer my question.
Unfortunately I left out a crucial fact the first time around: XASTIR
worked just fine for a few days when I first installed it. So I don't
think that the problem is with the installation.

(And for the record, I followed the old Cygwin install instructions first,
and ran into problems in the configure step. David heard my pitiful cries
for help and unveiled the new Cygwin install instructions, which worked.)

Also I discovered that if I get the problem and kill XASTIR, then xterm
works again. I previously reported that xterm doesn't respond to keyboard
or mouse events either once XASTIR stops responding.

I don't think that it has to do with the NumLock/CapsLock problem. If I
forget to turn NumLock off and click on something in XASTIR, I get told
firmly but politely to turn off NumLock.

Also the problem seems to be somewhat intermittent; sometimes I can get
the right-click menu to work. I've been playing with it, and I can't seem
to duplicate the problem every time.

This seems like a weird one. I think I'll see if anyone in the Cygwin
community might have any ideas...

[Xastir] xastir on cygwin installation problem

2010-01-27 Thread Rob Locher W7GH
I sent this message earlier before I got the welcome to the list
message, so I presume that the first copy went into the bit bucket. I
apologize if the list gets this message twice. - Rob W7GH

**

Greetings all,

I've been reading about APRS for a while now, and I decided that I just
had to download and run xastir. I decided to install it on cygwin. I'm
somewhat Unix-savvy, I used to be a Unix programmer back in the early
nineties, and I dabbled briefly with Linux around 1998.

So I managed to get myself well and truly stuck with the installation. I
used cvs to checkout the latest xastir. The configure step fails with the
dreaded error NO MOTIF HEADERS FOUND install Motif development
headers or use --with-motif-includes to specify location of Xm/Xm.h.

I did install the lesstif package as advised by the instructions. I
searched, and Xm.h is nowhere to be found on my cygwin installation.
There is no lesstif-devel package in cygwin.

I thought about downloading and building lesstif from source, but I read
somewhere that Xm.h is a motif header, and doesn't come with lesstif. (Of
course that was at 1am, and I can't find that reference now, so I'm not so
sure about that.)

So should my next step be to install lesstif from source?
