[Xastir] Can't open igate.log

2010-02-18 Thread Norm, VK3XCI

Ubuntu 9.10
Xastir 1.9.4

Tried to open /home/.xastir/logs/igate.log

Got an error message... (gedit)

Could not open the file /home/.xastir/logs/igate.log
gedit has been unable to detect the character coding

Neither UTF-8 or ISO-8859-15 seem to work

I thought it should be plain text. Any ideas? maybe it's corrupt as we've had
some power flicks.

Is Xastir still running? The file may be locked and/or still not fully
written to disk if the app is still open.

Where's your login name in that path?

The path should be something like this on Linux:

/home/loginname/.xastir/logs/igate.log

Check .xastir/config/xastir.cnf to see if some paths in there got
messed up.

Re: [Xastir] Can't open igate.log

2010-02-18 Thread Norm, VK3XCI

Thanks David, but no.

Shut down xastir and rebooted to make sure all buffers were empty, still no joy.
I've renamed the old file and started a new log, which is perfectly readable. We
had some power dropouts the last few days and I've had to restart the box
several times. Guess I've got a corrupt file.

I'll try vim when I can steel myself to it, but I don't hold much hope.

Re: [Xastir] Can't open igate.log

2010-02-18 Thread Norm, VK3XCI

You are correct Curt,

I'm using a GUI filebrowser which takes me straight to /home/vk3xci/... when I
click on the Home Folder shortcut. In my defence I've had a week of
decontaminating Windows boxes and it has impaired my thought processes. The file
is in the correct directory, ie. /home/vk3xci/.xastir/logs/igate.log

I've renamed it and started a new igate.log, which is perfectly readable. Also
backups of the original are readable up to Monday night. We had some power
glitches during the week so I guess the file has got corrupted.

Not really a problem but it would be good to back it up more often

2010-02-18 Thread Ray Wells

Norm,

Do you use Midnight Commander as a file manager? sudo apt-get install mc

If you ever used Norton Commander in the good old days of DOS, using MC
will be immediately obvious to you. It's the same apart fro o/s
differences. There's also a Windows Commander for Windows users.

Re: [Xastir] Can't open igate.log Resolved

2010-02-18 Thread Norm, VK3XCI

Thanks Ray,

I did the True Believer thing and opened the file with cat, then vim. both
swallowed it no trouble. Renamed the file with a .txt and OOo Writer had no
trouble either. gEdit still won't so something in there it doesn't like (towards
the end of the file I think.)

Tonite for fun I'll do the old half split thing and see if I can locate the bad
bytes, so to speak. Meanwhile I found what I needed to make a claim on my
electricity provider... but thats another story

Enjoy your weekend

Norm,

I just enabled igate logging on xastir 1.9.6, compiled on Debian v4.08
and it produces a plain text file.

My 1.9.6 compiled on Kubuntu 9.04 is a tail end system using xastir's
server port to the main system so there's no igate traffic to log.
