See the other thread today talking about Shapefile maps for Xastir.

Find some ESRI Shapefile extracts from the OSM data and use that.
Create a custom dbfawk file for xastir to get the labels displaying to
your liking.

APRSDroid offline maps use the mapsforge library. I don't believe
Xastir can handle this now, but adding it is not outside the realm of

2014-11-21 Thread Tom Russo
On Fri, Nov 21, 2014 at 06:56:58PM -0500, we recorded a bogon-computron
collision of the tomm...@frontiernet.net flavor, containing:
I was using the version of Xastir that was available via synaptic but
recently it stopped loading the OSM maps.

I replaced it with v2.0.7 that I built out of CVS following the directions on
the wiki but the problem remains.

 I get errors like:
   Magick: Improper image header
 (/home/tom/.xastir/map_cache/map_1416613517.png).

It won't load Geoserver or any of the radar maps either with similar errors.

Any ideas on what's gone wrong? As mentioned above, it worked originally and
 then stopped.

Not sure why you're seeing these errors. It is possible the particular
server you're using is actually returning error messages in HTML instead of
PNG files, which would 'splain the Magick errors --- can you view the
file /home/tom/.xastir/map_cache/map_1416613517.png in a non-Magick image
viewer? If not, can you do
file /home/tom/.xastir/map_cache/map_1416613517.png and see what it says?
If it says it's an HTML file, look at the contents --- it probably contains
an error message either saying the URL is no good, or some other error.

I just checked my Xastir CVS build on my own Ubuntu 14.04 machine and it works
just fine with the OSM_tiled_mapnik.geo OSM source. Does that one work
for you? Some of the others might reference servers that are gone or
disabled.

It has been a very long time since I've used terraserver or any of the
weather radar. I believe that all the weather radar geos we have in Xastir
reference ancient sites at Texas AM that no longer exist, and it's very
likely that what you're seeing there is the result of those sites being down.
Gerry Creager used to maintain those, and I believe they've been gone for
years.

I just tried using terraserver.geo and it does appear that it no longer
works. It hung for a while clearly trying to connect, then gave up with
a map timeout. The URL in the terraserver file must be out of date, or
the service no longer works.

I tried using the WMSRadar.geo online option and saw exactly your
Improper image header message; on checking I found that the map.png file
was actually an HTML documentcontaining a 404 URL not found message.

Fact is, nobody is really maintaining the collection of online .geo files,
and many of them simply stopped working. If we can identify all of the files
that reference invalid URLs, we can remove them from the Xastir distribution
to reduce frustrations like this, but nobody's done that leg work yet.

Hey Dave,

Not me having the problem, Thomas Maszerowski KC2TCK is the one with the
'speed bump'.

Granted I had a rough time back in August as I ended up having to wipe
my drive and do everything fresh when I went from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04
but that was to be expected with the problems I had in the hardware
department. (Bad sectors on the HDD)

My saving grace was a full copy of the HDD on another external drive
that I was able to cherry pick the files I needed to save my sanity!

My comment was more of a nortupmoc-nogob back to KM5VY regarding the
need for maintenance in the maps area of the xastir cvs code.

Looks good so far!

Try reindexing your maps. Map-Configure menu. There should have been some new
maps installed in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps/Online, like:

OSM_tiled_cycle.geo
OSM_tiled_mapnik.geo
OSM_tiled_osmarender.geo
OSM_tiled_skiing.geo
OSM_tiled_topOSM_0_relief.geo
OSM_tiled_topOSM_1_contour.geo
OSM_tiled_topOSM_2_features.geo

If you're not seeing these, even after reindexing your maps, then you probably
have your Xastir config files pointing into the binary location Debian uses,
while Xastir sources install into a different location. Check your
~/.xastir/config/xastir.cnf file for paths that don't start with
/usr/local/share/xastir and changed them.

We have no control over where packagers of binaries decide to put things, so
when you switch from binary packages to compiling Xastir from sources, or
vice-versa, you end up with your Xastir config files pointing to the wrong area.

That's a good idea. I think it has been mentioned before, but I don't

I was also wondering if anyone has looked at installing a local map

been CentOS), but it seemed like an all too typical linux dependency death

you have suggestions on which distro, a good howto, etc?

I'm liking the looks of these OSM style maps, but if I can't have my

Xastir has a built-in vector renderer. You could download the OSM source
data and use it directly. Here's a starting point, but I haven't looked

Did you by chance install Xastir from a binary first, say a Debian or Ubuntua
binary, then install Xastir from sources?

If so, your configuration in ~/.xastir/config/xastir.conf may be pointing to
the directories that the binary packagers used, and not the default
Xastir-from-sources directories.

The default map directory if you compile/install from sources is:
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps/

Your configs may be pointing to /usr/share/xastir/maps/ or elsewhere.

If you did the make install bit as root or using sudo, you should have a bunch of files
starting with OSM in:

/usr/local/share/xastir/maps/Online/

Also make sure you've reindexed your maps. That should get them showing up in
the Map Chooser if proper support has been compiled into Xastir for them.

Prettiness isn't an issue, but I think there could be a usability
difference when using the maps mobile. The xastir rendering of
shapefiles (I'm using TIGER data now) results in a map that's a bit
hard to read for navigational purposes.

I plan to use tangoGPS for a few days in the truck just to test that
theory and see if i'm wasting time. In terms of functionality,
reliability, resource utilization, etc, xastir+shapefiles set a very
high standard. Maybe that's why I gave up on navit so quickly. :)

Config files in your ~/.xastir/config/ directory must match the
installed Xastir location else you'll have difficulties. Same for
if you have more than one Xastir installed: You may end up starting
the wrong one by default and it may or may not match your current
config files.

So... If you've used a pre-packaged binary to this point (which
usually install to /usr/), then switch to compiling your own
(which installs to /usr/local/ by default), you may have to
hand-edit your ~/.xastir/config/xastir.cnf file to change the paths.
Or you can blow away that file (or rename it) and have Xastir create
a fresh one for you that matches your executable, then tweak all of
your settings again. If you rename it at least you can look in the
old file to see what your settings were.

Another option is to add some options to the ./configure line to
change the install location to match what you used before instead of
using the defaults.

Yet another issue: Very old Xastir used to install system files to
/usr/local/xastir. We moved the location a number of years ago to
${prefix}/share/xastir. For instance: /usr/local/share/xastir
or /usr/share/xastir. This affects the location of your maps, as
well as the per-user config files. We have some scripts in
xastir/scripts to help with this migration: xastir-fixcfg.sh and
xastir-migrate.sh. The first is run once per user (as each user),
the second is run exactly once as root.

I made the switch to /usr/local/ when I compiled 1.9.5. Xastir is
looking in the right directory, since I got the slew of errors on all the
ridge radar .geo's I put there from the published tarball, and it finds
the hand-coded .geo for the local DTX RIDGE site that I've been using
since USRADAR and WMSRADAR went down.
I packed all the ridge .geo's back in a tarball to eliminate the bulk of
the errors, then re-indexed all maps in the hopes that it would throw a
clear error on the OSM files, but no, it just ignores them:

Built-in map types:
  gnis USGS GNIS Datapoints
   pop USGS GNIS Datapoints w/population
   map APRSdos Maps
   map WinAPRS/MacAPRS/X-APRS Maps
   pdb PocketAPRS Maps

Support for these additional map types has been compiled in:

allowed)

geo URL (Internet maps via libcurl library)
osm URL (OpenStreetMaps via libcurl library)

xpm X Pixmap Maps (XPM library)
festival_client: connect to server failed

Finished indexing maps

On another system (Ubuntustudio 10.04), I checked out, compiled and
installed it according to the howto, and the OSM maps are loading fine.
I have noticed some anomalies, however, where the 'pan' buttons are
acting more like 'zoom' buttons. I was flipping back and forth between
the 'binned' and the 'zoomable' versions last night, and I'm not fully
sure which one was exhibiting that anomaly.

I'm going to have to open an account on openstreetmap.org so I can submit
some edits. It's showing an airport just north of me that's been closed
for years, and my gliderport just south of me that's been in continuous
operation since 1946 isn't listed at all! There also seems to be a
problem with the 'cloudmade1' style, in that some lakes nearby are cut off
at the county line, yet when I show the same area on the OSM web site the
lakes are complete. I have no idea where to report that problem...

Try the latest CVS to see if at least some of your problems are
eliminated. You'll have to manually delete the *.osm files from
your xastir/maps/Online/ directory.

I finally got around to updating this evening, and I see the .osm and

in the map chooser, even after doing a 'reindex all maps'.
In the terminal window from which I launched xastir, there appeared many
messages telling me the ridge radar .geo files were skipped due to a
missing IMAGESIZE parameter, followed by a question: Perhaps no
Imagemagic/Graphicsmagic is installed? My scroll buffer doesn't go back
far enough to see if there were any OSM maps rejected for the same reason.

Is that a possibility?

This is on a very old Kubuntu system. ISTR something about non-standard
library locations, and an alias or link that needs to be created. The
.configure script found imagemagik was indeed present.

Re: [Xastir] OSM maps and README.maps

2010-06-17 Thread Jerry Dunmire
Hi David,
Thanks for your offer.

The files specify the source and options for various on-line map
images generated from the OpenStreetMap data. The best starting point
to identify each of the 'styles' is this URL:
http://ojw.dev.openstreetmap.org/StaticMap/?lat=37.3136451416lon=-121.874084472z=11mode=Style;

The .osm files force Xastir to use binned scaling levels that match
the 18 fixed levels from the OSM. This eliminates scaling of the bit
mapped images, leading to clean images without aliasing artifacts
(jagged lines, blurring, dropped pixels, etc.) Other than their effect
on scaling the .osm files are identical to the .geo files of the same
name.

I am looking at some alternatives for selecting zoom levels, that if
acceptable, will eliminate the .osm files.

The .geo/.osm files also include comments that you might want to review.

Also note that .osm extension has a different, incompatible, meaning
for the OSM project.
