Thanks Jan, this works. I tested it with direct kernel boot. Like Pry
wrote pvgrub2 is another story, seems there is no support for lz4
compressed kernels in it , and ubuntu patches in support to the grub that
they ship.

This patch worked building xen-4.12.1 in Buster with python3.

I can now boot Focal kernel-5.3 which is LZ4 compressed. The domU can
boot as pv, pvh, using direct kernel (kernel/ramdisk), or pygrub.

I looked into booting as pvgrub2, thinking the code is universal, but
no. Thats why I CC'd Juergen. I wanted to do a kernel direct boot with
scripted pvgrub2 kernel.

I expect that once I build stubdom including this patch, then pvgrub
will work too.

need prior guarding, LZ4_SECURECOPY() needs this only in the 32-bit case
(where it simply aliases LZ4_WILDCOPY()). "cpy" can validly point
(slightly) below "op" in these cases, due to

cpy = op + length - (STEPSIZE - 4);

where length can be as low as 0 and STEPSIZE is 8. However, instead of
removing the check via "#if !LZ4_ARCH64", refine it such that it would
also properly work in the 64-bit case, aborting decompression instead
of continuing on bogus input.

In case it is useful, I was recently chatting to Pry Mar on IRC
about this issue. It also affects the Ubuntu 20.04 kernels (both
installer and OS packaged) which is no surprise since it seems they
switched to LZ4 compression from 19.10.

Pry Mar was able to make it boot under Xen PV by manually
uncompressing the vmlinuz first.

I have been meaning to take a recent Debian kernel or mainline
kernel and enable the LZ4 compression options to see if it is
reproducible outside of Ubuntu, but haven't found time yet.

Would you please increase verbosity (xl -vvv create ...) such that we
can see what exactly the decompression code doesn't like about this
kernel image?

shows my traces from a healthy CentOS 8, xen-4.12.1 dom0 when trying
to launch a pv install of the newly released ub1910. The source is a
block-attached ISO and the kernel/ramdisk was copied off locally.

Iso is named, eoan-live-server-amd64.iso.

There is also a kernel pair here
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/eoan/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/xen/

which behaves the same.

The `LZ4 decompress error` happened with other dom0, including
xen-4.13~rc1 on Buster.

ub1910 dom0 test

My goal with this domU install was to prepare a golden image for Eoan
dom0. I had trouble testing a fresh ub1910 build of xen-4.12.1 on a
good bare-metal install. The only doubt I had was the
`do-release-upgrade -d` from ub1904.

My new hypervisor would not even start in ub1910 and I got an install boot-loop.
