% strings /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/mga_drv.o | grep -i hal
Crtc2Half
NoHal
HALLib not loaded! NOT using "Merged Framebuffer" mode.
This card requires the "mga_hal" module for dual-head operation

Curious no?

My X server is the one that comes with the mandrake cooker.

Hmm, I think I got confused. The entry I saw was for XFree86 4.2.99.1 (March
2002), number 46, at: http://xfree86.desiato.de/xfree86/cvs/changes.html

  46. Mga driver updates:
   - Don't try dual-head mode with the G400 unless the mga_hal module
 is loaded.
   - Distinguish between the G400 and G450 when showing the chipset in
 the log.
   - Update the mga man page for supported hardware and dual-head
support. Futher updates are needed to document all of the
 drivers's options.

Anyone more ideas? Anyone else have any clues?

I made the (minor) changes as you mention, but nothing chances.

[XFree86] Rules for an Autoreply bot

2003-02-01 Thread John Tapsell
Hi,
As some of you know, I'm working on a knowledge based system (a bot) that
checks incomming emails against a database of rules, to try to reduce the
workload of the volunteers here.

The trouble is that the same questions keep being asked.
Hopefully I can reduce the workload, but give a better response to people.

Attached is the rules I have so far.

The rules _really_ need looking over, and touched up.

Please please try and clean up anything you know to be incorrect, and add
anything that needs adding.

An email has to match every rule, and every rule, Matches
inside a rule allow only one match to be made.

As of Red Hat 8.0 the default is to use only /etc/X11/XF86Config. The
use of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 was used up until then because of the

At first I let the driver load itself, but it makes no difference - I get
exactly the same error. I explicitly loaded it incase that made a
difference.

[XFree86] Bug: mga_hal and latest X

2003-01-31 Thread John Tapsell
Hi,
I think that inXFree86 Version 4.2.99.4 there is a bug in the detection of
mga_hal.

I had a look through the changelog for 4.2.99.4 and someone added some code
to detect and check whether the mga_hal module exists. I'm probably doing
this wrong, but it does seem to me, naively, that I have the mga_hal module,
loading it, yet it isn't being detected.

  I'm using the:

mga_hal_drv.o file from the latest drivers from matrox.org
mga_drv.o file that comes with X.
mga_dri.o file that comes with X.

I'm not using the mga_drv.o and mga_dri.o files from matrox, because I want to
have accelerated X and dual head. (even if it is only accelerated on one
screen.)

In the attached log file, the mga_hal module is loaded (I added LoadModule
"mga_hal" in the XF86Config-4 file)

(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/mga_hal_drv.o
(II) Module mga_hal: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.2.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.5

But I get this, later on in the log file

(II) LoadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Reloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(--) MGA(1): Chipset: "mgag400" (G400)
(EE) MGA(1): This card requires the "mga_hal" module for dual-head operation
It can be found at the Matrox web site
(II) UnloadModule: "mga"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"

Thoughts please?

Re: [XFree86] Segmentation Fault

2003-01-30 Thread John Tapsell
I believe that the problem is in the hardware acceleration. By moving that
module, X can no longer find it. Therefore it disables DRI and falls back on
software rendering.

I'll bet that you don't get a particulary good framerate.

Unfortunetly I do not know where to go from here ;)
Perhaps other people might know.

2003-01-30 Thread John Tapsell
The ATI Mobility card (I think) is an R200 core.
Both 2D and 3D will be supported in XFree86 4.3.0.

Thank you for this email!

  I haven't administrated a redhat machine for a long time - I wasn't sure how
it was setup.

I've noted down your points for future reference :)

Re: [XFree86] Trident TGUI9660: looks zoomed in about 20x

2003-01-30 Thread John Tapsell
Sir,
You wouldn't be able to move around because the virtual size is the same as
the view size (i.e. 320x200).

  Okay, do:

mv /etc/X11/XF86Config{,.backup-30012003}
redhat-config-xfree86

  (without the -4 this time)

Sir,
Can you send us the log file: /var/log/XFree86.0.log

If not, can you try and describe the problem as best you can.

Also, try going into the bios on the machine, and checking that the irq
request for the video graphics card is enabled.

First, It could be that you have some corrupted files.
  Please do:

  rpm --verify libnewt0.50

  It should return nothing.

Second. Check that /etc/pam.d/xserver says something like:

#%PAM-1.0
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_console.so
accountrequired /lib/security/pam_permit.so

Third. In DEBIAN there was a file called /etc/Xwrapper.config
I do not know if there is an equivalent in RedHat.

Hope this can be of some use.

Sincerely,

JohnFlux

you can use "ftp". Make sure it is in text mode before you do the "get".
This btw is the difference between text and binary mode in ftp.

Okay skip this step and go straight onto the :

redhat-config-xfree86

Re: [XFree86] X windows crash

2003-01-30 Thread John Tapsell
Sir,

Sorry for the last couple of emails.. heh

  First, reboot. Then boot by:

when you boot, pass the following option to the kernel:

'init=/bin/bash"

So if you normally type "linux", do "linux init=/bin/bash"
There's probably a better way. Perhaps "linux single" works, or "linux
safe".

For some reason it is using /etc/X11/XF86Config , and not
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 as I had assumed. I appologies for my error.

Please edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and add the unix/:-1 to the font path.

Re: [XFree86] Trident TGUI9660: looks zoomed in about 20x

2003-01-30 Thread John Tapsell
Hi,

Well your config file says:

(==) VGA(0): Virtual size is 320x200 (pitch 320)
(**) VGA(0): Built-in mode "Generic 320x200 default mode": 12.6 MHz
(scaled from 25.2 MHz), 31.5 kHz, 70.2 Hz (VScan)

No wonder it all looks big :)

Btw to convert from linux format to windows you can open the file in MSDOS
Edit. (file->run-> "edit") Then save it, or copy and paste it. Also MS
Word will convert iirc. :)

Anyway, on with the story.. You need to setup some resolutions.

Quickest way to do this is probably just to start from scratch.
Do:

mv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4{,.backup-30012003}
redhat-config-xfree86

Let me know how this works out.

Re: [XFree86] X windows crash

2003-01-30 Thread John Tapsell
Hi!

It is possible that the font server is listening on "unix/:-1" rather than
"unix/:7100"

To rule out that possibility, and make the config file more robust for later,
edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and look for where it says:

FontPath "unix/:7100"

And add in

FontPath "unix/:-1"

(You can leave them both in their. It will use whatever it can)

Let me know how whether this works.

You can get matrox PCI cards. Dunno about others.

Matrox has very good linux support - not quite perfect, but one of the best.

Re: [XFree86] XDM: Too many retransmissions - session declared dead

2003-01-29 Thread John Tapsell
Sir,

My first thought is that for some reason the configuration files are
different.

Please check that the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on a machine that works
is identical to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on the machine that doesn't.

If they are identical, try comparing /var/log/XFree86.0.log files
on the two machines.

If you solve it, please let me know. If you don't solve it,
please reply back letting us know.

Perhaps you could attach 3 things in the reply if it doesn't work:

1) The file: /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on the machine that doesn't work.
2) The file: /var/log/XFree86.0.log on the machine that doesn't work.
3) The file: /var/log/XFree86.0.log on the machine that does work.

That should help us try to figure out what is wrong.

Sincerely,

JohnFlux

Hi!

I assume you mean Mandrake :)

Anyhow, you can use the controls on your monitor to stretch the image to
fill the screen.

Or you can use xvidtune to get X to do it.

Or you could try a different resolution. (Run the mandrake configuration
center (mcc), go to hardware, and change the resolution there.

Let me know what you try, and how it turns out.

Best of luck,

2003-01-29 Thread John Tapsell
Personally I have no idea.
However, until the guru's wake up, I can give you a standard
template reply for all cursor problems..

Edit /var/log/XF86Config-4
Go to the 'Section "Display"'
Add:
 Option "sw_cursor"
And restart the X server.

PLEASE let me know whether this works or not.
I must have sent out a dozen replies to people this week, and recieved
zero response. ;)

Appologies to the previous person that I told 'SWCursor' to. That's what it
is in MS Windows :) In linux I think its 'sw_cursor'.

Re: [XFree86] X server

2003-01-29 Thread John Tapsell
Someone had this error, and we recommended to them to just remove the lock
and continue. In this case, there would have been no difference
to the server doing it automatically.

Perhaps we should start with what caused this.

* What creates this lock?
* Under what circumstances would this lock exist without X running?
* What is the worst case senario for ignoring the error,
removing the lock, and continuing?

Re: [XFree86] Hansol 710A - Redhat 8.0 ( Diamond Fire GL1)

2003-01-29 Thread John Tapsell
It looks like a problem with your XF86Config file.
You might want to backup the old config file:

  mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-old

then configure X:

  xf86config

Redhat might have a better way of configuring - I can't remember.

Couldn't we have X look for a running process, and if none found,
delete the lock?

If not automatically, then ask the user whether to.

It does seem rather silly to bother the user about this.

Ah, holmes, the solution can be found at the bottom of the log.
"Cannot open font 'fixed'".

Moving a few lines up we see the problem - It cannot connect to unix:7100.
I.e. your font server is down.

For some reason your font server isn't up and running. Do this:

service xfs start

That should do it.
If it does, do something like:

chkconfig xfs on

(or something - I've never administrated a redhat machine)

Re: [XFree86] HelpMePlease!

2003-01-28 Thread John Tapsell
Good sir,
Could you try something for me please?

place this in /etc/system:

set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax = 8388608
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni = 0x1000
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg = 0x100

And try again. Let me know if anything changes.
(Create it if it doesn't exist)

Thanks

Re: [XFree86] Bug reporting suggestion

2003-01-27 Thread John Tapsell
Okay I'll have it done by the weekend.
If it is of decent quality, could it be included in the distribution,
with a bit of text suggesting to run it appended to the X crash output?
Otherwise it is kinda pointless :)

We'll have a play anyway. I have an example tommorrow morning, and it's
getting late, so I won't be able to do it till friday.
Kick me if I haven't submitted something by the monday morning :)

ooh, as an after thought... I suppose this had better be done in C or C++?
I can code in just about any language, but best not increase the
dependancies of X, right?

[XFree86] Bug reporting suggestion

2003-01-27 Thread John Tapsell
Hi,
Many people are reporting problems and bugs without giving
enough information.
Personally I try to take the view "the user is always right", and so
this is what I propose.. :)

*) I (or someone else) writes a quick program (or extension to "bug"
or "reportbug" or any other bug reporting program) that the user runs.
*) Running this program is suggested when the server crashes.
*) The program notes down all the relevant details. X server, distro,
cpu, graphics card, copy of log, copy of config and credit card number.
*) The program emails this to a server. It shows it first
to the user, with an option to save it to file instead/as well as so that
those without internet connection can put it on a floppy disk and email it
from elsewhere.
*) The problem is compared against a crude knowledge base system
(fancy name for a database).
*) Solutions are returned to the user automatically.
*) The user is encouraged to reply, successful or not.
*) If successful, then the database notes it.
*) If not, the whole lot gets sent to a mailing list (possibly this one).
*) When it is solved, the knowledge based system is updated.

I've been meaning to do something like this, but more generic.
However the X mailing list tends to get a lot more repetive requests than
most, and also has emails with the least amount of information,
so seems the most needy IMHO.

  Thoughts?

If I hear no comments then I'll get depressed and kill myself. :)

Re: [XFree86] help!!!

2003-01-27 Thread John Tapsell
Bruce,
We seem to be getting more and more errors with no information in them.
How are we supposed to help you if you don't give us any information?

For a start, what OS is this? What cpu? What distribution?
What do the logs say? What are the permissions on /dev/io?
What version of X do you have?

  We aren't physic.

If this is a bsd machine, then you have your security settings too high.
If not, then perhaps your permissions are wrong. I can't tell with
the little information you have given us.

Sincerely,
JohnFlux

Re: [XFree86] RH 7.3 Help!!

2003-01-27 Thread John Tapsell
If you look at the log that you included, you see the key bit:

Parse error on line 102 of section Keyboard in file /etc/X11/XF86Config
"Meta" is not a valid keyword in this section.
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

I plugged that into google, and got the answer:

Message: 3
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 13:42:13 -0800
From: Kirk <[PRIVACY PROTECTION]>
Subject: Re: help with XFree86

Im guessing you upgraded from XF-3.3.x to 4.0.2 since you said RedHat 6.
The config file for X has changed in format. You should be able to run
xf86config and answer the questions about your system and get a proper
config. Just keep a copy of your old one incase you want to downgrade.

so do that, and let us know if you have any more problems :)
You might want to backup the old config file:

  mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-old

then configure X:

  xf86config

If you get stuck on anything again, in general, try just pasting the error
straight into google. I've done it lots of times, and almost always get a
good result :)

Best of luck,
JohnFlux

But I don't see the attached said file.
