[XFree86] Xfree86 Problem on My Virge

2004-04-25 Thread King Kassle
I have S3 Virge GX cooperated with 3dfx Voodoo2
here is the detail specification:

- Chipset: Virge
- Model: GX
- Manufacture: Compaq / S3
- Video Memory: 2Mb
- Bus Type: PCI

+ Chipset: Voodoo2
+ Manufacture: Skywell / 3dfx
+ Model: Magic 3D II
+ Vide Memory: 12Mb
+ Bus Type: PCI

both of them is placed on Compaq Deskpro 4000,
powered by Pentium 200 MMX, the OS is FreeBSD 4.5.

The problem is, If I use the Virge driver (like S3V).
when I start the X server (via startx, xdm, etc), it
is very noisy, glitchy, lot garbage (not comfortable
for eyes). Then if exit from X server (via CTRl+ALT+BKSP,
halt, etc) the console screen is getting crumple (unreadable).
I had tried to change the Xfree version from the distribution
bundle (XFREE 4.1) and from xfree86.org (Xfree 4.4) and the
result isn't better (no different).

But if I use the Generic VESA driver (Xfree 4.4) the result
is perfect.

I also tried to use the Xfree 3.x S3V driver to replace
the Xfree 4.4 driver, the result is good but when exit the
console screen also crumple like the 4.x.

The question is.
1. Is there any tips/hint/cheat to solve the problem ?
now I use generic VESA driver, but i prefer using S3Virge
driver if possible (not glitchy, noisy, etc about bad look)
2. How to make my Voodoo2 is usefull. I mean, can be used by
GL based games/application (such as Clan Bomber, GL Tron, etc).

currently i use XFree86 version 4.4, thanks for the help
and sorry if my english isn't well.

Possible Petition - RE: [XFree86] Can't start X with I830M chipset, 8MB preallocated video RAM

2003-12-18 Thread Stephen King
Why don't we start harassing Dell and Gateway since this is a known
problem with the BIOS. If we start with a standard petition email that
clearly states what is wrong and what needs to be done to fix it that
might work. A little bad press by sending this petition to other groups
and areas letting other open source users know that X will not work on
these laptops and to avoid buying them.

Join the club, sorry I can't be any help, I have same problem after
gateway "upgraded" my bios, I was hoping xfree v4.4 drivers would
resolve this, but I see you have tried it with no luck Maybe the anser
is to get intel to pressure dell and gateway to quit F***'n Around with
the bios on these laptops, by the time the developers figure out how to
get it working the mfg's change the bios and it quits working

.BTW as a non-coder, I'd like to thank all developers for their Work
on xfree86, keep up the good work!

Subject: [XFree86] Can't start X with I830M chipset, 8MB preallocated
video RAM

Hello,

I can't get XFree86 to start up on my laptop with an Intel 830M video
chipset. I'm running kernel 2.4.22 and XFree86 4.3.99.901 (4.4 RC1).
I've built and installed the latest DRI kernel stuff. AGP GART support
is in the kernel.

My video bios pre-allocates about 8MB of shared video RAM, which should
be more than enough for 1024x768x16 graphics. My video hardware and flat
panel are all detected perfectly by the X server. No matter what I put
in my config file, XFree86 still dies with "No Video BIOS modes for
chosen depth"... It doesn't matter how low I set my resolution and color
depth, I still get the error.

One problem seems to be that the driver's attempt to tell my BIOS about
the extra video RAM it's allocated for X's use is failing. The thing is,
the BIOS knows about ~8MB of video RAM without the driver telling it
anything, and that should be enough for 1024x768x16. agpgart also sees
8MB of video ram at boot, so I SHOULD be able to at least get a screen
running!

If it helps any driver developers, the BIOS I'm working with is inside a
Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop and is release A09. I would go harass Dell but
I don't know what to ask for. If anyone can confirm my take on this
issue, I'd appreciate it.

I've attached the full log and config file. Sure hope someone out there
can help!

Thanks,

Gabe

RE: [XFree86] X errors w/ new gateway BIOS

Title: Message

This
is also the case with the Gateway 305x which uses the i830/i810
chipset

It doesn’t look like gateway will
do anything to help us……so would some kind developer
consider
  Looking into a possible
  solution/patch?
The laptop uses the intel i830
chip and before the bios upgrade, XF86 v4.3 worked fine……….
Now with the new v36.01.00 bios, X
cannot reclaim the stolen memory, I think the address’ have
  moved.
I can provide kernel messages from
before and after the upgrade, but I only have current, i.e. post
  upgrade,
  X logfiles……
BTW, this has happened to several
gateway solo 1450 users, so we know it is related to bios
  upgrade.
  Thank You,

[XFree86] 852GM Chipset Graphics Controller on OpenBSD 3.4 cannot go > 800x600

2003-11-20 Thread Stephen King
This is my first time posting to the list as I have never had to use
such new hardware J. We are getting the latest source from cvs now, but
while we wait for it, I thought it would be a good idea to post, since
I'm really not sure what the problem is

At any rate, We have a gateway laptop: 305X Model #m305crv which has
the Intel 852GM chipset (http://orpheus.music.uh.edu/~justin/gateway) .
We cannot get more than 800x600 at 16bpp. I know the following patch is
not specifically for 852GM, but:

8 October 2003:
A patch based on Christian Zietz's code to tell the video BIOS about
extra video memory that has been allocated was committed to the XFree86
CVS trunk. This should help with many 825GM/855GM laptops that were
previously limited to video modes requiring less than 1MB of video
memory.

Does this have anything to do with what is going on? Here is some more
information (also, go to http://orpheus.music.uh.edu/~justin/gateway for
a dmesg and the kernel config file )

David Dawes said on http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html (Last
modified: 20 October 2003), that other platforms other than LINUX,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, were not tested. I may send this to him, but
I thought it more appropriate to start on the xfree86 list.

We have used this patch and still cannot >800x600 @ 16bpp

Thanks,
