What did modprobe nvidia print out. The XFree driver couldn't find the
kernelmodule so their had to be an error message.

You did not load the kernelmodule.
As root try modprobe nvidia. If it works tell the System to load the module
on startup by putting nvidia in /etc/modules.
Then reboot.

2004-02-19 Thread NUKE THEM
...
For more information see Kernel Notes at the bottom of
 http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/.

This explains the message.

/proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield does not exist on my system so my kernel does not
support exec-shield. I don't think I need it thus I won't waste time tryiing
to enable this feature.

Leaves the question:
Can I tell X not to log this message?

(I run a Debiansystem and have bad experiences not using the
maintainers-packages. That's why I can't use the original binaries from
XFree86.org.)

[XFree86] XFree86.log flooded with Not loading .note.GNU-stack

2004-02-18 Thread NUKE THEM
Hi,

this message appears over 500 times in my XFree86.log.
I googled and found I'm not the only one with this messageflood.
But I found no responses telling:

What does this message mean?
How can I solve the problem?
How can I tell the X to do a last message repeated xyz-times instead of
making my log unreadable?

Re: [XFree86] Matrox G450 Video Card

2004-02-13 Thread NUKE THEM
Matrox has a driver on it's homepage. It should work with every XFree86 4.x.

Since Mandrake 7.0 is using XFree 3.3.6 you should consider downloading a
newer Mandrake.
...Or use the 3.3.6 SVGA driver. It has all options for 2D but no 3D.

Hope this helps.

I had the same Problem with my NVidia until I entered Modlines for the

I don't know why they don't ship these lines with XFree any more but here are
the lines that worked with my card/monitor combination:

# 100 Hz Modelines
Modeline 640x480 45.8 640 672 768 864 480 488 494 530 -HSync -VSync

You'll probably have to tune them with xvidtune.

Yes, I have it working on my system. Besides the two InputDevice sections
you posted, you may need to change your ServerLayout section to something
like what's below. The other key ingredient is to make sure that all the
modules needed for the usb mouse are loaded before X starts. Otherwise,
you may see an error in the log when the server tries to open the device.
The list of modules I use is below.

 Best
 L. Jensen

 Section ServerLayout
 Identifier Layout[0]
 Screen Screen[0]
 InputDevice GenericKeyboard CoreKeyboard
 InputDevice SynapticsTouchPad CorePointer
 InputDevice USBWheelMouse SendCoreEvents
 EndSection

MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT= usb-uhci input evdev mousedev hid

Didn't help with Linux 2.4 but I just upgraded to 2.6 and now it works. Weird,
as much as I know the USB-System didn't change.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your answer.

[XFree86] Accepting external USB-mouse without restart

2004-02-11 Thread NUKE THEM
Hi,

I'd like to be able to plug in my external USB-mouse and use it without
restarting X. Is this possible?

I have a Labtop with a PS2-Touchpad (Synaptics) running Linux 2.6.0
(selfcompiled) on a Debian unstable (XFree86 4.2).
Here is the mouse section of my XF86Config-4 :

 Section InputDevice
 Identifier Configured Mouse

 Option SendCoreEvents true
 Option Device /dev/input/mice
 Option Protocol Auto
 Option Emulate3Buttons false
 Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
 Option AllowMouseOpenFail true
 EndSection

 Section InputDevice
 Identifier Touchpad
 Driver mouse
 Option CorePointer
 Option Device /dev/psaux
 Option Protocol ImPS/2
 Option Emulate3Buttons true
 Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
 EndSection
