It didn't. Same behavior with A03 as with A02.

A02. I'll try A03 and see if it helps.

You've got your mostly working with RH9, right? What kernel version
are you using, and do you have the i830.o module from your kernel, or
the module provided by Intel on their page for this chipset?

I saw your earlier post, which is how I found out about 855wrap. So

Yup, I tried it unset, at 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536, and 131072,
all with the exact same effect.

Ah, good catch! I hadn't noticed that was what was failing. For this
run, I had the i810 module installed, but I just tried again with
i830, and it did the exact same thing (including the DRI error in the
logfile)

It starts the XFree 4.2.x that came with my distro, and it does the
exact same thing.

Some people do this with vnc:

It's supposed to play well with X, although I have only used it to
connect to Windows machines.

See Vojtech Pavlik's Input Drivers FAQ:

  http://kerneltrap.org/comment/reply/2199

Problem:
~~~
Kernel reports:
   atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x7a on
isa0060/serio0).
   atkbd.c: This is an XFree86 bug. It shouldn't access hardware directly.
Solution:
Well, the kernel means what it says. XFree86 boldly goes and
accesses the keyboard controller registers when it starts up. This
is a bad thing to do, as it can conflict with the kernel using
these registers at the same time.  The kernel spots this and
complains, and in most cases is not affected by the problem.
So, unless you are an XFree86 developer and can fix X, ignore this
message.
[XFree86] Trouble with Intel 855GM in Dell D505 laptop
2004-02-09 Thread Scott Gifford
Hello,
I'm having no luck getting X running on my brand new Dell D505 laptop
with an Intel 82852/855GM video card.  I've tried 4.2.1.1, 4.3.0, and
a CVS version from late last week.  With all versions, when I run
startx, the screen turns a nice kelly green color, and then does
nothing.  I can't switch VTs, although I can press CTRL-ALT-DEL to
reboot.  Logs look pretty normal, except for a warning about "Bad
V_BIOS checksum", which I'm not sure about.
Anybody have ideas about what to try next?  I've attached my log and
my XF86Config file.
Thanks!
ScottG.
It's not just you.  I've tried XFree 4.2.x, 4.3.x, and the 4.4
prereleases on my d505, and couldn't get any of them to work.  I
couldn't get Xig's server to work either, for that matter.  The screen
just turns a sort of green color, and video doesn't work anymore,
including switching to a text VT.
I'll post my config and logs, too, in the next day or two.
