You likely need to get rid of any mention of fbdev from your XF86Config
file.

Thanks to Craig Ringer and Jesse Hutton - while it does not solve
my problem yet, I made a little progress.

No Jesse Hutton, Option FlatPanel 1 does not work.
I810(0): Option FlatPanel is not used

--
Back to problem.
The Flat Panel 1504FP is 1024x768 with Depth 8. Hsync 30-60, Vsync 56-75.

In Boot session I see the following message:

quote

Please press RETURN to see valid video modes, or SPACE or await 30 sec
(either make your choice between various sets 80rows x N lines;
or wait 30 sec)
/quote

I have been playing with /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Section Monitor and Section Screen for DefaultColorDepth (mine is 8).

I get two situations:
1. Half-success:
Graphic display, but with enooormous font size, actualy useless
(II) I810(0): monitor1: Using hsync range of 31.00-60.00 kHz
(II) I810(0): monitor1: Using vrefresh range of 56.00-75.00 Hz

(II) I810(0): Not using mode 800x600 (no mode of this name)
(II) I810(0): Increasing the scanline pitch to allow tiling mode (640 - 1024).

(--) I810(0): Display dimensions: (300, 220) mm
(--) I810(0): DPI set to (54, 55)

2. Disappointement:
The blue screen, where a small clock logo is working quite a long
while, screen changes into various coulours, at the end it became
blue, with a small white space, written in nice font (precisely what
I would like to get !) and a note Impossible de lancer le programme
Impossible de creer le module d'entree/sortie: Too many open files.
I definitely hate to have my OS in anything else than ASCII,
they probably say Impossible to launch(?) the program. Impossible
to create IO module: Too many open files
Once this is closed (click click), I have full blue sceen,
my mouse is able to open half-broken menus of KDE environment.
But nothing can be done with it, except reading it.

My Conclusion:
I think I miss correct information for ModeLine for Section Monitor
Section Monitor
Identifier monitor1
VendorName Plug'n Play
#ModelName Dell 1504FP Flat Panel 1024x768
HorizSync 31-60
VertRefresh 56-75

something similar to Sony Vaio:
# Sony Vaio C1(X,XS,VE,VN)?
# 1024x480 @ 85.6 Hz, 48 kHz hsync
ModeLine 1024x48065.00 1024 1032 1176 1344 480 488 494 563 -hsync -vsync

Any help would be much appreciated.

What I have in doc/log is:
# DELL 1504FP, 1024x768 @ 60 Hz
# Ranges: V min: 56 V max: 75 Hz, H min: 30 H max: 60 kHz, PixClock max 80 MHz
# Supported additional Video Mode:
# clock: 65.0 MHz Image Size: 304 x 228 mm

# v_active: 768 v_sync: 771 v_sync_end 777 v_blanking: 806 v_border: 0

I do not know enough about it, it seems that guessing below is NOK.
ModeLine 1024x76865.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806

2003-08-06 Thread Jesse Hutton
Some drivers have a problem with detecting a LCD monitor, which looks to
be the case from the log. You might try adding this line in the Device
section for your video card config of /etc/X11/XFree86-4:

Option FlatPanel 1

It's supposed to word for NVIDIA chips, anyway...

OK, sounds like XFree86 is trying to start, but you haven't said any
more. It just stops at a featureless black screen, it doesn't
 occasionally flash or anything?

I'll try to go over the log, but be aware that I don't use an LCD much
myself and don't know much about them, so there might be stuff I'm
 missing here.

Dell techies say they support Windows only.

Yeah. Yay. That's why OEM linux installs would be handy, for folks who
 want tech support.

The CDROM provided with Flat Screen gives all characteristics

  Résolution présélectionnée maximale 1024 x 768, 75 Hz

It looks like XFree86 is finding that info with DDC - oh, and you're
 running the latest XFree86, good.

Yeah, because it can't find a suitable resolution to run the display at.
At least, that's what it looks like.

You should be able to find info on reconfiguring X under your distro
docs. Alternately, boot into single user mode (this is a boot option in
most distros) and reconfigure X from there. I don't know what setup tool
mandrake uses - drakx comes to mind, but perhaps Xconfigurator is right.
Perhaps someone who uses mandrake can post with the correct one?

[XFree86] Problem report - Mandrake 9.1 on Dell Optiplex GX270 with Flat Screen 1504FP

2003-08-05 Thread Elisabeth Porteneuve
Greetings,

Mandrake 9.1 on Dell Optiplex GX270 with Flat Screen 1504FP
The install went well, I even have Mandrake graphic screen
with choice of linux, dos, etc, but then when corresponding
boot starts it ends with black screen, and problem.

Dell techies say they support Windows only.

The CDROM provided with Flat Screen gives all characteristics
(in French), and it also says that monitor have capability
of Plug and Play.
On resolution it says:
La plage de fréquence horizontale 31 kHz à 60 kHz (automatique)
La plage de fréquence verticale 60 Hz à 75 Hz (automatique)
Résolution présélectionnée optimale 1024 x 768, 60 Hz
Résolution présélectionnée maximale 1024 x 768, 75 Hz

The XFree log is attached /var/log/XFree86.0.log

What does it meen no screens found, see at the end below.

Thanks you !
Elisabeth Porteneuve
