Which is the shortest way to get the new xfree86 version? can you please give me any link to some resources? You can start with http://www.xfree86.org/releases/rel460.html. Re: [XFree86] Monitor problems....
Jon Henrik Bjørnstad wrote: I have recently installed SuSE 8.1 on my computer. But I cant get Xwin to manage my monitor properly. When the window manager starts, the screen just turns off. Ive been searching in the XF86Config-file to find a solution and to see if drivers for my graphics card is installed. It seems like the setup program has properly configured my NVIDIA-card and that XF86Config is using the right driver. So I figured there was a problem in the monitor section. Maybe my screen resolution is to high. How can I change the screen resolution in the XF86Config-file? * Hi Jon, In order to setup your video in SuSE, you should run 'sax2' at runlevel 3 for best results. It is possible to use YaST2 to adjust and setup your graphics, but not recommended as it is not totally bug proof there. The easiest thing to do is the next time you boot your computer as soon as your Grub loader screen comes up, type linux 3, without the quotes and let it boot to the konsole only, no grapics or kde. Log in as root and run sax2 which will take you into the grapics setup for the mouse, keyboard, video card, monitor, etc. You probably won't have 3d capabilities using the SuSE supplied nvidia drivers, but 2d should work great. Nvidia has closed source binary drivers and does not make them available directly to SuSE or any other distro, they are downloaded seperately, either from their site or while doing a SuSE online update. With those binary drivers, you should be able to activate 3D as well. Hope you have good luck with the drivers, Nvidia cards usually prove to be some of the biggest headaches to keep configured.
