[ANNOUNCE] xorg-sgml-doctools 1.10

2011-09-13 Thread Gaetan Nadon
This version has revisited the Cascading Stylesheet for the HTML
documentation. It is now embedded in the each HTML file rather than
being linked to installed directory making the docs more portable.
Supporting olink for chunked html has caused a new version of the olink
masterdb.

New versions of docbook.am in all packages hosting documentation will be
released soon. This is necessary to match the olink masterdb changes.

Re: libX11 and libXext (at least) fail using prefix on make install

I think this must be picking up your host's pkg-config file for
xorg-sgml-doctools that determine where to install the cross reference
databases for the documents. Do you see the following line during
 configure?

 checking for X.Org SGML entities = 1.7... /usr/share/sgml

The fix is either to install a new copy of xorg-sgml-doctools for your
prefix before libX11/libXext, or just disable the build of the spec
docs with --disable-specs. If you're just installing X as a
dependency, you may not care about the spec docs (they take a long
time to build, too). I think the next release of these modules will
have that fixed so the files follow --prefix, but I don't know when
 that will be.

This was fixed 10 days ago in git master:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libX11/commit/?id=b370eeb0191b0e2a8bde2f03a442a8ca62e35d58
and in all other modules with docs.

Version 1.8 of xorg-sgml-doctools is required. Configuring with
--disable-docs and --disable=specs will skip building the documentation
which is a sizable piece of work in libX11.

Subject: [ANNOUNCE] xorg-sgml-doctools 1.8

2011-06-11 Thread Gaetan Nadon

This release mainly changes the location where the target dbs for olinks
are expected to be located. Currently, no released modules contain
DocBook/XML documentation with cross document references (olink). All 21
modules containing DocBook/XML documentation will update their
docbook.am makefile and request version 1.8 of xorg--sgml-doctools.

This change is motivated by the distcheck failure when user has no
write permission issue found in x11proto. Now is a good time to improve
this feature while it is not being used by any released modules.

[ANNOUNCE] util-macros 1.13.0

2011-03-15 Thread Gaetan Nadon
A handful of modules have begun adding unit test programs.
These macros will help providing a consistent interface which will

help package builders and developers to manage the functionality.

XORG_ENABLE_UNIT_TESTS will turn on/off unit testing, regardless
of how it is implemented. The default (yes/no) can be specified by each
module. It can be used by itself if glib or -wrap support is not needed.

XORG_WITH_GLIB will probe the system for glib-2.0. A different version
can be specified in each module. It will consult XORG_ENABLE_UNIT_TESTS
but can be used by itself in contexts other then unit testing.
The default (yes/no) can be specified by each module.

XORG_LD_WRAP will probe the linker for -wrap support. It will consult
XORG_ENABLE_UNIT_TESTS but can be used by itself in contexts
other then unit testing.

Thanks for isolating where the problem was injected.

I'd like to understand better, per-target flags are not for

and in this case, it should be a no-op.

Can you provide the command that is issued? Is it trying to
cross-compile makestrs?

[ANNOUNCE] util-macros 1.13.0

2011-03-14 Thread Gaetan Nadon

XORG_ENABLE_UNIT_TESTS but can be used by itself in contexts
other then unit testing.

util-macros is installed in /usr/share as it is architecture
independent.

For my part. I set:

PKG_CONFIG_PATH=
/home/nadon/xorg/src/lib/pkgconfig:/home/nadon/xorg/src/share/pkgconfig

This path is searched before the default search path. See man
pkg-config.

Once you have sorted it out, remove excess files copied and install
util-macros using make install.
Also check if PKG_CONFIG_LIBDIR is set which changes the default search
path.
That makes several places were an older copy can hide.

This should tell you where it is, based on env vars:

pkg-config --variable pkgdatadir xorg-macros

 Thanks in advance,

You can let the build script set the environment variables for you.
The default values should work for you unless you have very special
needs.

What you might get into is some missing tools. This wiki lists all the
packages
you need to build xorg. It would be nice if you could update it with
version 10.10.
You have about 20 or so UBUNTU packages to install.

-L : just list modules to build
util/modular/build.sh -L modlist.txt # Creates a list of all modules

Usage: build.sh [options] [prefix]

util/modular/build.sh --clone -n# Do not stop on error
util/modular/build.sh --clone --autoresume resume.txt # Stop on error
but record where you are

You must supply the prefix which is where you want the modules to
install the binaries, not where the source code is (but it could be the
same). Expect a git repository to time out, it happens sometimes.

Re: [PATCH 1/5] build: use AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR as per libtoolize warning

 in-tree.
 libtoolize: Consider adding -I m4 to ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS in Makefile.am.

It's suggesting that you add AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR([m4]) so that it will
helpfully install it's m4 files there and attempt to make them
persistent. Jeremy Huddleston asked not to do this a while back
because it's then harder to replace the included libtool with the
patched version on OSX. Not sure if this is still a problem, but there
are definitely pros and cons to distributing the libtool macros in the
 tree.

There are quite a few modules having an m4 directory. This is where
modules put their additional
m4 macros (unrelated to libtool). There may be additional behaviours
associated with having an m4 directory.
It's still not clear to me. In any case, the libtool macros are shipped
in aclocal.m4. I think the issue was libtool v2 versus 1.5.
I don't think it's a problem anymore.

The -I m4 should not be added when you have no macros in git. Libtool
does not need that to work and it will break
the build on a fresh repo clone because m4 cannot be found.

Nothing wrong with this patch, but to prevent having to
update .gitignore
(and forgetting to update it), you can copy the .gitignore from just
about any of the
xorg modules.

For example:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libXcursor/tree/.gitignore

You wil be able to remove the .gitignore in the m4 directory. You can
keep the
AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR but you will need to remove the -I m4 from
the Makefile.am file. The build will fail on a newly cloned repo.

The .gitignore is a file containing patterns, it's not just a list of
files. It
applies to all subdirectories.

Without double-quotes an variable expansion (e.g. ${var}) is subject
to field splitting (for each character listed in the variable IFS -
which by default contains space, tab, newline).
Example (note that sh is expected to be a POSIX sh-like shell):
Without double-quotes the printf utility will see the value foo
bar as two arguments (note that printf(1) will repeatedly use the
format until all arguments have been used-up):
 -- snip --
 $ sh -c 'x=foo bar ; printf |%s|\n $x'
 |foo|
 |bar|
 -- snip --
 With double-quotes it will print:
 -- snip --
 $ sh -c 'x=foo bar ; printf |%s|\n $x'
 |foo bar|
 -- snip --

It's usually recommended to use double-quotes unless field splitting
is really wanted (or set IFS='' to disable field-splitting).

Thanks. I tried to run autogen.sh on a module installed in a source
directory containing a space
and it failed.

 Bye,
 Roland

Then perhaps you need to update the master xorg .gitignore, because the
suggestion to use ACLOACL_AMFLAGS will appear on any project with a
 libtool library.

The suggestion to use ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS come from the Autoconf tools.
I looked at the warnings and the output of autoupdate and autoscan and
there
are plenty of warnings that do not apply.

If you are using 2.65 (or even 2.68), it will give you warnings that are
not applicable
to 2.60. The docs don't tell you (or rarely) which features belong to
which release.

The .gitignore file is not related to Autotools, just git. If you end up
with an empty m4
directory, and you have -I m4, aclocal will fail. In fact you should not
have -I m4
anyway because you have no macros in there.

If you install the toplevel .gitignore as I suggested, you can
remove .gitignore from m4.
Then you need to remove -I m4 or it will fail during a clone. That's the
chain of events
I was warning about.

If you grep for -I m4 in other xorg modules, you'll the pattern.

I thought I'd share stuff I learned the hard way!

Does this target work for you?

That fixed it for me.

The tarball was created from Automake 2.68, I have 2.63.
Further investigation is required, it could be the level of automake

Our build machines are similar, I use Ubuntu 64 bit. Not that it is
critical to have, but in order to reduce differences, you should build
and install the package xorg-sgml-doctools. This will give you the
stylesheets for the docs generated in /nls. It will remove the following
message from config.log:

configure:5826: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors xorg-sgml-doctools

Package xorg-sgml-doctools was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-sgml-doctools.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'xorg-sgml-doctools' found

I have uninstalled this module (make uninstall) and reconfigured libX11
and /nls still builds correctly.

When you issue the cpp command yourself, it works. When you issue the
make command, you only get the $@ part which evaluates to
am_ET.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE. The variables have the correct value, yet they
don't show up on the emitted cpp command. The problem has to be around
this area. Try some of these:

Edit the generated Makefile to replace the variables with their values.
Build other directories (just cd and make install) particularly the
specs directory.
Check for any local hack to the make executable.
Build the /config dir in app/xdm
(http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xdm/) it uses a similar cpp
command.
In a new empty directory, clone the libX11 again and rebuild.

I attached my generated Makefile for comparison.

I also tried to issue the command you have mentioned before, it
executes without any error (so the commands used are all valid) but
the XLC_LOCALE file it creates is empty (probably because I did not
 edit any environment variables).

Mine too is empty. This is normal for some locales.

Good luck.

This driver is not hosted by freedesktop.org. It's the only package
included in a release one cannot find at the usual place. The COPYING
file does not accurately reflect the licensing in the source code.
Hopefully it won't harm X.Org.

XCB: are the newly added xcb packages now officially part of X.Org? If
so, should their git repo be hosted under 'xorg/' in the appropriate
proto/lib section? This is about the only hint for new contributors as
to which package belongs to X.Org and which one does not.

LT_INIT requires libtool v2 whereby xorg lowest common denominator is
v1.5. I suspect that in real life almost everyone uses v2. If I
understand correctly, when configured with v2, libtool copies a handful
of v2 macros in the m4 directory (only if available). This allows a
system with v1.5 to use the v2 macros.

I am considering upgrading all of xorg to libtool v2 (only formalizing
the current situation). I am interested in the feedback you may get from
builders on that matter.

Consider adding:

AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR([m4])

But do not add in the makefile:

ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS = -I m4

unless you have a macro in m4 subdir that is stored in git.

dependencies that are part of the distro that I am not aware of. You may
also want to disable document generation using --disable-specs
--disable-docs or --disable-devel-docs.

You can export PKG_CONFIG_LIBDIR=/dev/null to ensure you do not link to
dependencies you are not aware of.

This is the list of pkg-config files that I ended-up with at the end of
the build:

I thought so, thanks for confirming. I submitted a patch to skip the

This will prevent breaking the build for those who do not have lynx,
links or w3m.

Correct, that's the choice of the original author as it is considered
developer's documentation. But that is a separate discussion.

I suggest the following patch to discontinue generating the .txt
 version entirely.

An alternative is to skip the documentation in text format when the
dependencies are missing (either lynx, links or w3m).

I have posted a patch. You can apply the libXfont patches, and then, to
minimize disruption on your system, you can copy/paste the util-macros
new code in libXfont configure.ac. Reset version number requested from
1.10 to 1.6.

tinderbox was not updating from git, so it did not break the build. I
had cc you, but you may not have this e-mail anymore.

It's unlikely we will get a quick resolution. I don't mind reverting it
if it is ethically acceptable. It's a big patch (36,000 lines), it would
be even better to nuke the top commits. Or just taking it out of the
build is another option. The last version is available anyway.

Re: Correct git clone and build instructions?

just go through and clone these one by one until the dependencies are
met? I suspected it's just the beginning of a long chain of hairy
dependences that might be worthy of emailing the list first.

Is there a tool like the android repo or perhaps a method to pull
down the various git trees via git submodule? Or just README that
contains the recommended order of building and installing?

When it comes to X building, this is what people are referred to:

   http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ModularDevelopersGuide

 I hope it helps!

In there, this is a simple method that works. It builds more than you
want, but it will take more time to trim it then it takes to build it.
Starting with nothing, you get everything. The build.sh script is
up-to-date.
Also not that you must have the correct tool chain to build. This wiki
will give you a good idea of what is needed:
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/RequiredPackages

From the Git repository
Note: X.Org has moved all currently maintained modules to the Git
repository. See the GitPage for more information and UsingGit on how to
use Git.

The build.sh script is provided in the xorg/util/modular repository. It
provides a --clone flag to get the modules required. To get the initial
checkout of all modules, run:

$ cd /tmp/src
$ git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/util/modular util/modular
$ ./util/modular/build.sh --clone -a -n /tmp/modular

This will clone all modules into the right directory structure. The -a
flags tells the script to skip automake and hence the build will fail.
The -n flag tells the script to continue regardless. Both flags together
will result in a clean checkout of every module.

Alternatively, run the above command without the -a and -n flags and the
script will build everything into the prefix provided.

[ANNOUNCE] util-macros 1.6.0

2010-02-05 Thread Gaetan Nadon

All document generation macros are now available. By default, doc
generation is skipped if the tool is missing. A builder can turn any
tool off if he suspects it will break (perhaps because it is back
level). These should not be used to skip document generation, see macros
below.

XORG_WITH_GROFFHAVE_GROFF --with-groff GROFF
   HAVE_GROFF_MS
   HAVE_GROFF_MM
XORG_WITH_FOP HAVE_FOP--with-fop FOP
XORG_WITH_PS2PDF HAVE_PS2PDF --with-ps2pdfPS2PDF
XORG_WITH_ASCIIDOC HAVE_ASCIIDOC --with-asciidoc ASCIIDOC
XORG_WITH_XMLTOHAVE_XMLTO --with-xmlto XMLTO
XORG_WITH_DOXYGEN HAVE_DOXYGEN--with-doxygen DOXYGEN

Document building enablement macros. This allows a builder to skip
document generation if such documents are not desired. They should not
be used to workaround tooling issues, use macros above. By default,
building is enabled. The default value can be changed from configure.ac
by invoking the macro like XORG_ENABLE_SPECS(no)

XORG_ENABLE_DOCSENABLE_DOCSGeneral documentation
XORG_ENABLE_DEVEL_DOCS ENABLE_DEVEL_DOCS More specifically developer's
documentation
XORG_ENABLE_SPECS ENABLE_SPECS More specifically functional
specifications

Patches will be posted soon which make use of these macros for existing
docs and specs.
