At this stage, X is running but I cannot start any sessions. It appears to
me that what ever process creates that socket is not installed or is not
running. I also question the line that says Using vt 7 rather then saying
something about 'i810'. My xorg.conf has the driver set to 'i810'.

The socket, in this case, is the dbus system socket used to register
the session with ConsoleKit. Probably, you don't have dbus running,
but that shouldn't matter here. Things like HAL talk to ConsoleKit,
but this doesn't matter for just running a regular X session.

The Using vt 7 message just means that the server is running on
virtual terminal 7. I.e., tty7. You'll have to look further in the log
file to see what video driver was actually loaded.

Thanks. I'm afraid I have a problem even doing the uninstall. Could this be the
crux of all my trouble?

Don't look at me. I wasn't working for Mandriva when those started
being installed by default. I just changed the rpm specs to not
install them on newer versions...

But it is good that it can build on x86, so, while it cannot be
executed, compiler warnings can be checked, and one can check for
missing symbols (other then the sbus ones).

Hmm, sounds like something more fundamental is wrong then. I'd imagine
your upgrades have perhaps not gone overly smoothly :s

Perhaps you can supply your full xorg.log (a link to a pastebin would be
nicer than attaching).

You may have to remove the currently installed package first yes.

You can do:
rpm -e --nodeps x11-driver-video-intel
rpm -Uvh x11-driver-video-i810-1.7.4-22mdv2007.1.i586.rpm

I wouldn't normally recommend doing this kind of thing but if things
really are not working for you then this could help.

Re: Broken X11 After Mandriva Upgrade

2008-11-26 Thread Paulo César Pereira de Andrade

  Hi,

I recently upgraded to Mandriva to 2007 Free. In the process, something
happened that broke X11. I have tried everything I can thing of but no
 joy.
It has been very difficult to get any diagnostics because when I try to
startx, the console goes black and neither keyboard nor mouse can do
anything. I finally did a startx via ssh and got these errors:

I suggest you try a newer Free release, otherwise, you will need
to remove some packages, as it is, for some reason running X -configure.

 X Window System Version 7.1.1

[...]

 sunbw2
 suncg14
 suncg3
 suncg6
 sunffb
 sunleo
 suntcx

Remove the x11-driver-video-sun... packages listed above. They
were being build and installed by default, but they won't work
on a normal ix86 computer.

[...]
 Xorg: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/sunbw2_drv.so:
 undefined symbol: xf86MatchSbusInstances

Do these message suggest a course of action to anyone as to how I can fix
 this? TIA.

You can also run xorgcfg -textmode as root, in a shell to create
an initial xorg.conf.
