No. Like I said, I'd be more suspicious of the font render or
font server. I don't see that there's anything significantly
different between the x86 and PPC versions of the nv driver.
There's just some register changes programming big endian
primitives rather than little endian ones, and those obviously
work or it wouldn't be rendering. I never saw any crashes,
but I wasn't using a font server and didn't have the freetype
module installed.

You said it crashed. Do you mean it segfaulted? Do you have
a stack trace?

X just stops. The image of the session remains in the framebuffer but
no interaction
can take place. Trying to kill X using the ps command (from a remote
terminal) is
not able to remove X or the image from the screen. The only way to get
the console
back is to reboot. I vaguely remember looking at the log files, and
seeing nothing
out of the ordinary.

I would be glad to provide more information, if I could (suggestions
welcome).

[Xpert]Keyboard repeat problem on Portege 4000

2002-01-02 Thread Teemu Rinta-aho

Hi all,

I use XFree86 4.1.0 on a Toshiba Portege 4000 laptop installed from
NetBSD's xsrc module which was updated today, just before the compilation.

The problem is that when typing fast the keyboard sends some keys twice or
more ressulttinggg llikkke thhiiisss. The problem is only in X, not on
console, and only with the internal keyboard of the laptop, not the
external. I have tried to fix the problem with the X BounceKeys setting,
and it seems to help for a while, but after being in X for something like
20-30 minutes, it seems like the BounceKeys option resets itself, and they
keyboard starts repeating by itself again.

I know that the problem has occurred on other people too, namely Hubert
Freyer (http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-x11/2001/11/02/.html), and
under a different operating system also using XFree86 4.1.0, namely Linux
(http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/linux/portege4000.html).

It would be great if there was a solution to this, but even if there
isn't, I'd appreciate if someone gave me tips on how to debug this
problem more. How can I probe the BounceKeys option status while
running X, for example.

BR,
Teemu

[Xpert]startx/xinit hangs

2002-01-02 Thread Michael Diolosa

I have just compiled and install XFree86 4.1 on my linux system. I am
using a Voodoo 3 graphics card, a Sony Multiscan 20se || monitor.  I am
currently install X into /opt/X11R6 just for testing purposes. When I run
startx it finds the proper xinitrc file and passes it to xinit, xinit then
starts up x and does nothing more from there, it does not execute anything
in my xinitrc file. I left my machine on over night and when i got back to it
in the morning i had noticed that the information in xinitrc had been parsed
and executed. I looked back at the console where i had ran start x and noticed
that it said x connection broken to display :0.0 4 times. Does anyone have
any ideas on why xinit would be taking so long to execute the information
in xinitrc?

[Xpert]Voodoo 4 4500 AGP

2002-01-02 Thread Paulo Vitor Magacho da Silva

Hi,

since I upgraded my XFree86 from 4.0.3 to 4.1.0, I can't you the dri extension
for
the Voodoo 4.
The XFree 4.0.3 had a RPM package called XFree86-tdfx-dri-4.0.3 ... that
provided the
dri capability for the Voodo 4500. It worked quite well.
The Xfree 4.1.0 doesn't have this package. Although the performance using
software
renderer has improved, I can't use the hardware acceleration. I have already installed
the glide
library for this board and I use the Opengl libs provided by the Xfree package.
My distribuition is Conectiva Linux 7.0, and I use the kernel 2.4.12 .

Thanks,
  Paulo Vitor

[Xpert]Video card hw acceleration?

2002-01-02 Thread Lai Kok Foong

Hello;)
I'm kinda new to linux. I'm currently using RedHat 7.2 on my PC with a 8Mb SIS6326
video card. My problem is how do I enable hardware acceleration for the video card?
and how do I configure X to use 24bit color with 800x600? I've got no problem using
16bit but when I select 24bit the screen goes bw and stretched. Is there any way for
me to correct this?
PS : If I'm in the wrong post, please correct me. Thank you.

[Xpert]*Severe* time lossage with XF86 4.1.0 and S3Virge MX LCD

2002-01-02 Thread Kenneth Crudup

Looking thru a couple of months of list archives turned up nothing, so:

When running 4.1.0 on my laptop using a S3Virge MX, my system clock loses
at least two seconds per minute.

I've done everything I can to narrow this down, and the bottom line is
when X is running, even in a fresh weave (running X only), even when
the VT is not active, my clock is slowed. I've tried pulling out all
the optional stuff (fifo_aggressive, the pci-burst/retry stuff,
NoPM, you name it). I've got an AMD K6-2 at 400MHz.

The relevant files are below (I used to hate MIME in mailing lists, so I
won't start now that I use a compliant mail program; no attachments unless
they're OK here).
