Seems like both this and YARN-6323 JIRA are overlapping a bit. Shall we commit 
this patch first which does only recovery of FlowContext. Later we shall 
discuss about upgrade scenario? This makes us to think about the different 
cases. 

bq. In buildAppProto at lines 986 onwards in ContainerManagerImpl.java, should 
those be done only if ATSv2 is enabled?
Its not required to check again that ATSv2 is enabled or not because if ATSv2 
is not enabled, flowContext will be null. So, even FlowContext proto does not 
build. 

bq. At line 1041, in startContainerInternal in ContainerManagerImpl.java, just 
trying to understand why these were moved.
Oh, sorry I did not explain this while attaching a patch. It is just an 
optimization. It is not required to create FlowContext object every time if 
application is already added into context.

I think I agree we should store the flow context in the state store only if all 
three fields of flow context is present. I think default values for flow 
context should be used only in the case when we are upgrading from non-existent 
flow context to enabling atvs2, in that case, it's at read time from state 
store when we don't find it in the state store. YARN-6323

Which leads me to the question, regarding YARN-6323. Rohith, should I rebase my 
patch on YARN-6323 after this one goes in? Then I can create a default flow 
context if the null check at 386 in ContainerManagerImpl.java  fails. 

One more question. In buildAppProto at lines 986 onwards in 
ContainerManagerImpl.java, should those be done only if ATSv2 is enabled?

At line 1041, in startContainerInternal in ContainerManagerImpl.java, just 
trying to understand why these were moved. Should the flow context not be 
created from launch context if application exists? Trying to understand what 
behavior will change by this code movement.

There are 2 cents. 
# IMO, we should NOT set default values for flow context. There are 2 cases, 
## Master container launched : RM sets flow context in container launch context 
and start it. This required to be recovered during NM restart. 
## AM launches containers : Flow context details are not set. So, it is not 
required to store and recover during NM restart and no use also. 
# additional null check for strings before creating a proto is because setter 
method for strings in proto throws NPE if  flowName or flowVersion are null. 

bq. FlowContext.toString(). Can we do something like {k1=v1, k2=v2, k3=v3} for 
better readability in the log?
make sense, I will change it next patch after Vrushal review it.

Thanks [~rohithsharma] for the patch! A few comments.
1) Do you think we should preserve as much flow context information as 
possible? The patch only stores flow context in the state store only if all 
three fields of flow context is present. We could sanitize the flow context and 
fill in default values for whatever field is missing and then just check if 
flowcontext !=null before storing application state. Thoughts?
2) FlowContext.toString(). Can we do something like {k1=v1, k2=v2, k3=v3} for 
better readability in the log?

Thanks [~haibochen], I will use that jira  YARN-6323 for ensuring a default is 
set, which would help with rolling upgrades. This jira can be used for adding 
in the code to read/write to NM State store.

I am seeing this in our code that's backported to branch-2 (2.6 with some 
backports).
But I believe this will happen on any branch since we have not yet written the 
code to read/write flow context during NM restart/container recovery.

In the case that there isn't a prior flow context, we also want to think of a 
default. 

Also, let's say the NM is constantly crashing (for some unrelated reason) and 
trying to come up. Now each time the recovery tries to instantiate a default 
flow context,  it should be such that the recovered app impl info always maps 
to the same record for that application id and does not end up creating new 
rows in hbase each time the NM restarts.
