Unity dash file search is extremely slow

Bug description:
When I try to use the Unity dash search feature to navigate to files
and folders, it is extremely slow. For example, if I hit the super
button to launch the search and then type Pictures to get my
pictures directory, it takes almost 5 seconds for the folder icon to
show. In comparison, if I use Gnome-Do to navigate to my Pictures
  folder, it's basically instant.

I have attached a video screencast so that you can see the problem for
yourself.

Bug description:
The Unity interface, with its files-place feature for user access to
  files/documents etc. is really great.

However there is a problem since the search feature relies wholly on
zeitgeist (AFAIK), in the zeitgeist is not tracking everything.

E.g. in openoffice, I create a new file (or open an existing one) from
within openoffice itself. This file does not show up, presumably
because openoffice does not (yet) push its activity to zeitgeist.

I guess any number of other programs could suffer the same problem.

For the average user, this is surely going to be confusing. They will
create documents via legitimate means ('New ...' buttons in their
applications), and then expect to be able to search for them in the
  Unity files-place interface.

To avoid this confusion I would guess there really needs to be a
filesystem watcher on the home dir (or key folders within it) so that
zeitgeist is aware of activity caused by non-zeitgeist-aware
  applications.

(See also bug 897393, about warning users that the search doesn't
  search all files.)

[Zeitgeist] [Bug 804712] Re: Unity panel does not disapear on fullscreen

2011-08-17 Thread Omer Akram
Could you attach a screenshot of the problem? bug 792690 seems similar
to this issue. Do you have any steps that I could take to reproduce this
bug that would be helpful.

[Zeitgeist] [Bug 780841] Re: The files lens includes folders that don't exist

2011-08-11 Thread Omer Akram
Just tested, It seems the favorite folders are the one's that we see in
Nautilus 'bookmarks' menu(obvious) if any folder is removed from that
menu it is cleanly removed from the Dash as well. But if you delete any
of the bookmarked folders by hand, they are cleanly removed from the
'Bookmarks' menu instantly but they remain in the dash.

  Binary package hint: unity

The first thing I do after I install ubuntu is cd ~; rmdir * to
remove the folders that I don't use. (I already have analogs in
another partition that I mount as ~/data.)

  However, these folders (~/Downloads, ~/Documents, ~/Pictures,
~/Videos) show up in the Dash's search results even though the folders
don't exist. I see these ghost folders in Top Results when
searching by invoking the dash, using Find Files, or using Files
  Folders.

I tried clearing my zeitgeist history:
  rm ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite
  zeitgeist-daemon --replace

But these folders still show up.
