[Zeitgeist] [Bug 787868] Re: Encryption of database

  Encryption of database

Status in Zeitgeist Framework:

Bug description:
I think that Zeitgeist should encrypt databases in
  ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/* for anti-forensics reasons.

While someone may happen to use an encrypted disk, Zeitgeist may serve
as the ultimate accidental spyware to an unsuspecting user. One
possible mitigation is to randomly generate a reasonable key, tie it
into the login keychain and then use that key with something like
  http://sqlcipher.net/ rather than straight sqlite.

In theory, a user will never know that this encryption/decryption is
happening - no underlying assumptions about the disk need to be made
to maintain any security guarantees. This should prevent anyone from
learning the contents of the database without also learning the login
password. Modern Ubuntu machines disallow non-root ptracing (
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/Roadmap/KernelHardening#ptrace )
and if the gnome keyring is locked, an attacker would have a much
harder time grabbing meaningful Zeitgeist data without interacting
with the user or bruteforcing the login keychain.

Large requests increase memory usage considerably

Status in Zeitgeist Framework:
  Confirmed
Status in Zeitgeist Extensions:

Bug description:
I'm seeing with standalone Sezen that after running it, mem usage of
the zeitgeist-daemon process goes up from ~13MB to ~40MB, this is
understandable as when Sezen is starting, it does one big query where
it asks for everything grouped by most recent subjects and in my case
this returns ~11 thousand events, so the extra 30MB can be explained
by allocating memory for the DBus reply.

Still, my question is whether Zeitgeist should be at mercy of the
applications, where nothing prevents them from spiking the memory
usage of the core process. (I already saw a couple of times zeitgeist
using 80-100MB of memory on my system). Perhaps there's a way to tell
python dbus to free its buffers?

A useful additional capability would be for Zeitgeist to be aware of

[Zeitgeist] [Bug 787803] Re: Make Zeitgeist aware of files downloaded by Chrome

2011-06-05 Thread मनीष सिन्हा
If there isnt any way for chrome to notify extensions they I have a hack
in mind, but that would be pretty brutal

The out of box installation of Chrome/Chromium downloads anything in
Downloads folder. We are keep a inotify watch(ugly) for new files
downloaded, but I am not sure if inotify can find out which process is
creating a file.

1) There is an option to change the Download directory.
2) There is an option for prompting the user to choose the download folder
everything the user downloads something.
These two options might break the hacky workaround.

If we are read the config file which stores the download directory, then
1 can be fixed, but 2 would still break.
