Re: [zeromq-dev] Moving IRC channel from freenode

2021-05-24 Thread Luca Boccassi
Seems like at libera.chat they solved the temporary issues they had,
and registrations are back up. I registered both my nick and #zeromq to
avoid squatting. If there are no strong objections, I'd propose to
switch to libera.chat by the weekend.

I had lost track of the IRC channel after some move to slack years ago.
Better dig up my IRC client again.

I have no preference so anything that's a preference for anyone.

Freenode has always been rife with drama. My 2 cents would be to go with oftc.

Re: [zeromq-dev] Moving IRC channel from freenode

2021-05-19 Thread Brett Viren
Hi Luca,

2c from one IRC user:

I'd follow the channel just about anywhere that's not discourse/slack.
IRC is preferred but I would and do visit ZeroMQ matrix channels.

The most important thing in my mind is to maximize cohesiveness of the
FS/OSS IRC community. I think OFTC would be a safe bet for that. OTOH,
if libera indeed becomes "freenode, next generation", I'd like to see
the channel going there. So, maybe some wait and see is best?

That was just trolling :-)

But we could learn from that discussion to setup a ZMQ based chat
server somewhere :-)

99.% of IRC usage is from new users asking questions as they use
the project for the first time. The main requirement of the channel is
thus ease of access for them, so being part of an established network
where other open source projects are located is fundamental.

Testing new clients/servers can be done by developers separately if
desired, as something like that doesn't exist at all. Also we don't
have the resources nor the time (nor the intention, from my side) to
roll our own infrastructure, with all the massive headaches that brings
in around security and privacy.

A chat which is ZMQ based please, dogfooding is the most important
concept to learn from!
