 FileTxnSnapLog.restore does not call listener
 -

 Key: ZOOKEEPER-874
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ZOOKEEPER-874
 Project: Zookeeper
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: leaderElection
Affects Versions: 3.3.1
Reporter: Diogo
Assignee: Diogo
Priority: Trivial
 Fix For: 3.4.0

 Attachments: ZOOKEEPER-874.patch

FileTxnSnapLog.restore() does not call listener passed as parameter. The
result is that the commitLogs list is empty. When a follower connects to the
leader, the leader is forced to send a snapshot to the follower instead of a
 couple of requests and commits.

Reporter: Diogo
Assignee: Diogo
Priority: Minor
 Attachments: ZOOKEEPER-876.patch

When starting a new leadership, unnecessary snapshot transfers happen between
new leader and followers. This is so because of multiple small bugs.
 1) the comparison of zxids is done based on a new proposal, instead of the
 last logged zxid. (LearnerFollower.java:310)
 2) if follower is one zxid behind, the check of the interval of committed
 logs excludes the follower. (LearnerFollower.java:269)
 3) the bug reported in ZOOKEEPER-874 (commitLogs are empty after recover).

[jira] Created: (ZOOKEEPER-877) zkpython does not work with python3.1

zkpython does not work with python3.1

 Key: ZOOKEEPER-877

 Project: Zookeeper
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: contrib-bindings
 Environment: linux+python3.1

 Fix For: 3.3.1

as written in the contrib/zkpython/README file:

Python = 2.6 is required. We have tested against 2.6. We have not tested
against 3.x.

this is probably more a 'new feature' request than a bug; anyway compiling the
pythn module and calling it returns an error at load time:

python3.1
Python 3.1.2 (r312:79147, May 8 2010, 16:36:46)
[GCC 4.4.4] on linux2
Type help, copyright, credits or license for more information.
 import zookeeper
Traceback (most recent call last):
File stdin, line 1, in module
ImportError: /usr/local/lib/python3.1/dist-packages/zookeeper.so: undefined
symbol: PyString_AsString

are there any plan to support Python3.X?

I also tried to write a 3.1 ctypes wrapper but the C API seems in fact to be
written in C++, so python ctypes cannot be used.

[jira] Updated: (ZOOKEEPER-877) zkpython does not work with python3.1

2010-09-22 Thread Patrick Hunt (JIRA)

Patrick Hunt updated ZOOKEEPER-877:
---

Fix Version/s: 3.4.0

Slating for 3.4. This would be a great project for someone interested in both
zk and python 3 support. ;-)

zkpython does not work with python3.1

 Key: ZOOKEEPER-877
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ZOOKEEPER-877
 Project: Zookeeper
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: contrib-bindings
Affects Versions: 3.3.1
 Environment: linux+python3.1
Reporter: TuxRacer
 Fix For: 3.4.0

as written in the contrib/zkpython/README file:
Python = 2.6 is required. We have tested against 2.6. We have not tested
 against 3.x.
this is probably more a 'new feature' request than a bug; anyway compiling
the pythn module and calling it returns an error at load time:
 python3.1
 Python 3.1.2 (r312:79147, May 8 2010, 16:36:46)
 [GCC 4.4.4] on linux2
Type help, copyright, credits or license for more information.
  import zookeeper
 Traceback (most recent call last):
File stdin, line 1, in module
 ImportError: /usr/local/lib/python3.1/dist-packages/zookeeper.so: undefined
 symbol: PyString_AsString
are there any plan to support Python3.X?
I also tried to write a 3.1 ctypes wrapper but the C API seems in fact to be
written in C++, so python ctypes cannot be used.

I thought I had replied to your comment on the 13th, but it seems not. Looking
at the code again, the way you did the factory is good. I misunderstood how
zookeeper handled configuration.

 Failure Detector Module
 Possible Mentor
Henry Robinson (henry at apache dot org)
 Requirements
Java, some distributed systems knowledge, comfort implementing distributed
 systems protocols
 Description
ZooKeeper servers detects the failure of other servers and clients by
counting the number of 'ticks' for which it doesn't get a heartbeat from
other machines. This is the 'timeout' method of failure detection and works
very well; however it is possible that it is too aggressive and not easily
tuned for some more unusual ZooKeeper installations (such as in a wide-area
network, or even in a mobile ad-hoc network).
This project would abstract the notion of failure detection to a dedicated
Java module, and implement several failure detectors to compare and contrast
their appropriateness for ZooKeeper. For example, Apache Cassandra uses a
 phi-accrual failure detector (http://ddsg.jaist.ac.jp/pub/HDY+04.pdf) which
is much more tunable and has some very interesting properties. This is a
great project if you are interested in distributed algorithms, or want to
help re-factor some of ZooKeeper's internal code.

[jira] Commented: (ZOOKEEPER-823) update ZooKeeper java client to optionally use Netty for connections

2010-09-22 Thread Patrick Hunt (JIRA)

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ZOOKEEPER-823?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanelfocusedCommentId=12913660#action_12913660
 ]

Patrick Hunt commented on ZOOKEEPER-823:

I was also seeing some intermittent nettynetty failures previously. However now
I'm seeing this each time (3 out of 3) I run on one of my beefier server boxes
(8core)

junit.framework.AssertionFailedError: thread HammerThread-0 still alive after
join
at
org.apache.zookeeper.test.ClientBase.verifyThreadTerminated(ClientBase.java:308)
at
org.apache.zookeeper.test.AsyncHammerTest.testObserversHammer(AsyncHammerTest.java:213)
at
org.apache.zookeeper.JUnit4ZKTestRunner$LoggedInvokeMethod.evaluate(JUnit4ZKTestRunner.java:51)

this only showed up after merging in ZOOKEEPER-846, so I suspect that something
has changed in this patch such that more than just applying 846 is necessary.

I'm pretty swamped, Thomas can you look at these issues? (incl the ones
I/flavio cited earlier?)
