Andrew Milton wrote: Mihamina, Yes, Andreew. (I quote all things you said because I see you have very good arguments and you did not reply in the list) Even if these products no longer actually work, they may provide a function that is useful, and may only take minor fixing from someone. Quite apart from that, they can also serve as learning tools for people getting into Zope product development. Removing something purely because of its age, is not really a valid reason. It's doubly not a reason if it's code you're not even interested in. I asked that because a newbie to a software, whatever it is, is looking at the activity of the project. Having products last modified at 2002 or 2003 is a bit strange for newcomers. At least should we ask the developpers to precise their old products are compatible with latest Zope release. That would trigger and update the last modification date. But you're all right, and I now agree with you all: deleting old products is a bad idea. That's the power of discussion. Many of us still use or maintain code a lot older than that, that is perfectly usable. Some things simply don't require constant changes once they achieve life. However, since you seem really keen to contribute, I'll outline a process that would be constructive. 1) Find code you're interested in 2) Test it If it doesn't work 3) Fix it a) If you can't, try to find someone that can (and will). 4) Send patches to author 5) Wait.. 6) If you get no response add a the patch to your Zope area. a) Make a list of abandoned projects that might be useful if they can find a maintainer. I get plenty of emails from people intersted in old code that I maintain, that I'm not necessarily using any more, and I'm ususally happy to make it 'work' again and release a new version. Or to hand over projects that someone else is really more interested in. A lot of people are willing to help, even to fix old broken code. Just not to fix all the old broken code. I'd probably sign up to make stuff work for projects that would be useful if maintained, without assuming the mantle of maintainer (I maintain enough open source projects as it is). It's OK for me! :) ___ Zope maillist - Zope@zope.org http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

You do not find my products on zope.org but on my Zope page and there you do not easily see when they last have been updated. But, I would refuse a request to specify for which versions the products run. Instead, I rely on users of the products to report problems for specific Zope versions and then I try to fix incompatibilities (usually with these users' help). If I do not hear anything, then either there are no problems or no users -- in both cases, there is no need to do anything... Of course, I do not mind, when you do not use my products, due to my refusal to periodically update the products. -- Dieter ___ Zope maillist - Zope@zope.org http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

LocalFS ZopeShortCut both very nice, useful work with 2.9.x, 2.10.x .. Zope.org is a scary sad stupid mess, BUT yes it's also full of useful stuff But oh boy its some tlc and some web2.0 commonsense interface friendliness Like add a form so people can flag and comment notes and version goodness and trouble METADATA for fucksakes.. Then one could actually sort and search for products in more useful, less time consuming random way. But then it would'nt be zope if you did'nt need hope right Things that would be really useful to know: list/sort/search products by -- last date product was updated [then you could narrow to only within 1 year . If no good or some special need, widen the timerange.] -- number of downloads this could be very useful indicator of aliviness or currrent validity -- abandonned lots of products say that they are discontinued. Good to know. But if only that info were stored as metadata flag [with date of announcment], imagine ow uch easier it would be. -- Plone dependencies == packages needing some version of plone -- Zope 3 dependencies == products using Zope 3 -- now hosted elseware -- many are mainatained elsewere with newer versions etc -- dead link WHY is it so hard for noble prize winning dynamic Zope to track a dead url, and save one all that extra hassle ??? Re: [Zope] Re: deprecated products?
Some Products deprecated ( and some not ) only need minor editing to get working again such as I did to a Product when moving to a newer Zope. Even I can do minor edits and help from the list makes it even easier and quicker when I can't find a solution on my own. Just because a Product is deprecated doesn't necessarily mean it is totally unusable or useless. Although there has been mentioned a good point in being able to scope searches in the Products.
