At the risk of making a dumb suggestion. Make sure the switch in the back
of your Color Classic is in the on position. My experience from the Compact
Mac is that this is a very common "oops".

Many Macintoshes show that symptoms (or very simmilar ones) when the
PRAM battery is dead. If that is the case, you can test it this way:
power it on, wait about 10-15 seconds, and then rapidly switch it off an
on, leaving it powered off for about 1/2 or 1/3 of a second. If the
