Re: v17 ready for prime time?

2018-07-23 Thread Pat Bensky via 4D_Tech
I got this message from a customer on Friday after upgrading to v17 Windows:
"I’d say the program isn’t as smooth as it was before – kind of refreshing
the screen a lot/going blank for a second and re-appearing. When I drag and
drop items the whole list goes blank and I just guess where to drag and
drop them to in the list."

I'm not sure about exactly which Windows version and what configuration,
but it is definitely 64-bit and I've compiled it for 64-bit. I'm doing a
screenshare with her later today to investigate. My guess is she needs
more memory ... if anybody has any suggestions, please speak up!
It doesn't behave that way for me of course :)

Re: v17 ready for prime time?

2018-07-22 Thread Jeffrey Kain via 4D_Tech
We went live with 17.0 last week at Sweetwater.

A few gotchas and glitches, but ready for deployment in my opinion. Like you,
this is our only window for a big upgrade during the year.

Our issues:

 - The new network layer has taken a step back from v16. Performance died at
about 400 users/2000 processes. Version 16.3 HF2 could handle our load of 600+
users/3500+ processes. Luckily the old network layer is available in v17 for
all platforms, which seems to be fine.

 - Issues on 64-bit Windows printing compared to 32-bit - for us this is with
Zebra label printers (using the Designer driver) as well as printers with
multiple bins. We'll have to dig into this more, but 32-bit Windows is fine.

 - There's a weird issue with cloned VMs or machines created from a master
image that didn't exist in prior versions. If you see cloned workstations drop
off the server when another clone connects to the server, you'll need to either
create a new user account or reinstall the OS from scratch. We've seen this on
both Mac and Windows now. On Windows, it was with 8 VMWare virtual machines
that were all cloned from a master VM. On the Mac, we saw it in a department
that had 9 iMacs that were all imaged from the same source.

Other than these initial issues, Everything Seems OK™

Everyone that responded mentioned new projects. Has anyone pushed a legacy
project from v16 to v17 into production with 4D Server with 20 or more users?

The best time for us to upgrade is summer. While it used to be that it would be
foolish to move to production before .1 or .2, v16 was pretty stable from the
beginning and with the changes in development practices it seems like new
releases are much more stable than they used to be.

Re: v17 ready for prime time?

2018-07-17 Thread Kirk Brooks via 4D_Tech
Hey Steve,
I am really impressed with v17 and recommend it for all your new projects.

I also strongly recommend reading the blog. It's not just pretty. The posts
about the new v17 features are really worthwhile. The way you can associate
a collection with a listbox now is remarkably powerful once you get it. And
the options and implications for using ORDA are really profound. But
really, really different from the way we've been doing things. So if you
start designing a new project without some understanding of what you can
accomplish with ORDA it's a bit like getting that new Porsche and only
using the first two gears. Still goes like hell but you're missing out on a
lot.

I re-watched the videos of Thomas Maul and Laurant from the Summit
yesterday. I got so much more from it now that I've been using v17. I
really recommend taking a look at them. The fact that you _can_ work with
v17 exactly the way you have worked with pretty much every version since
v11 doesn't mean you should. Especially on a new project.

I've been working quite extensively with it - haven't run into any issues
so far, and I'm loving the improvements to Write Pro.

Hi Steve, I’m about to use v17 on a new project. I’m confident that I can work
through any teething issues with the support of 4D—they have always come
through for me.

v17 ready for prime time?

2018-07-16 Thread steve simpson via 4D_Tech
I see that a lot of you are using v17, doing active development with it,
testing it out with current projects, etc. I don't normally move production
projects into a new version until the xx.2 or xx.3 iterations, but am
wondering if some of you who are actually using v17 in production could
chime in with your opinion as to whether it is safe to move straight from
v15.5 to v17 now, or best to move first to v16 and wait for a couple more
updates to v17. Is it ready?
