I'll be along. The batteries for my drill and sander/multitool thing
have stopped charging so I'm going to take them in to poke at with a
meter and see if I can figure out where the problem is, if it can be
fixed and is worth fixing. I'd quite like to modify the batteries to
have the 18650 cells removable so they can be put in a reliable charger.
My backup plan is to make them mains powered so might do some testing to
see if 12V works for that.

2014-12-09 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers

Again it is Tuesday, 57North's weekly open night. Anyone is welcome to come and
see and space and what we get up to. Normally there is some hacking, drinking
of tea and wondering where all the Arduino's are.

If you are heading in ping -discuss and let everyone else know.

Re: [57north-discuss] Tuesday Talkers

2014-10-27 Thread Andy Gaskell
Hi

I don't mind doing a Tuesday up talk, some random ideas I could do are...

   - Web development state of the nation - and insider's view on web
development generally and locally. I did this at TechMeetup a couple of
months ago, so one or two people have maybe seen this already.
   - Inside a healthy Open Source project and community - In October I went
to Joomla Day (Joomla is an Open Source CMS, Joomla Day is the annual
conference), so this would be a talk about various Open Source project
governance models and practical experiences of the community.
   - An introduction to the Joomla CMS. This would be a quick fly though
the Joomla CMS system and platform. So we'd talk though use cases, user
experiences, installation, configuration, code structure, developing
extensions, coding up templates, tool-sets, skill-sets and comparisons to
   other CMS systems.

...so if anyone would be interested in one or more of them, let me know.
Don't expect anything too cool or TED-like though, just blurb about the
things I'm into :)

Cheers

Andy

Hi, Tom.

I'm hoping to get the rest of the scrap servers from Kit Wright and then
we will see what we have before deciding what to do with them.

I'm interested in running Qlustar on them:

  https://qlustar.com/

[Qlustar is free for non-profit use]

I'd also be interested in talking about BTRFS to anyone who is
interested in 'next-gen' filesystems. I've been experimenting with it
using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS if anyone wants to compare notes.

Sadly, my Parallella has not yet arrived - However, Callum E. has 3D

Might drink a couple of beers if I have to :-)

Hi, Tom.

I've bought replacement motherboards for the 2U 'Rackable' systems that

motherboards. I thought these Xeon systems from Petrotechnics might be a

I shall be along. Plan is to drink beer and figure out how to speak to
the memory chip on my FPGA board.

No word from Kit yet about the servers, but I'll try to get in touch and

Kit is at Info Sec in London this week.

Hi, Rowan.

OK, I'll try contacting Kit again next week.

Thanks,

  Tony.

I'll be working on the Flashy badge workshop instructions and maybe more
prototyping.

Cheers,

Hi,

Not coming in tonight - Got disk problems :-(

I got a Startech 4-port PCIe SATA III controller card (PEXSAT34RH) to
use with some shiny new 4TB SATA disks that I bought. This controller is
based on the Marvell 88SE9230 chipset and, I now discover, lots of
people have been having problems trying to use it under Linux...

To cut a long story short, I thought it was because of the SATA III 6G
speed at first so I set a libata module parameter to limit the speed:

  /etc/modprobe.d/libata.conf
  options libata force 3.0Gbps

That did NOT cure the problem :-(

However, the system is a lot more stable when I disable NCQ (Native
Command Queueing) even if I leave it at 6G (i.e. not limited):

  options libata force noncq

Now in the process of restoring ~2TB from backups...

See you next Tue!

  Tony.
