I wasn't able to push my IWP9 slides to GitHub until late last week, so here
they are for those who are interested:

[9fans] IWP9 Update

2024-03-13 Thread Brian L. Stuart
Some of you may have noticed that the original deadline for the
camera-readycopy of papers and the WiP reports is today.  The committee has
decidedto extend that deadline by one week.  So anyone for whom the edits
haveslid to the back burner, you've got a reprieve.  After the new deadline
onthe 20th, we'll work on putting the online proceedings together.
Thanks,BLS

[9fans] IWP9 Hotels

2024-02-01 Thread Brian L. Stuart
A week ago I sent out a request for interest in a hotel room block at
$200/night.  I got exactly one response saying that's what AirBNB is for.
Unless I hear differently by sometime tomorrow, I'll interpret the lack of
response as indicating that everyone has or is planning to make their own
arrangements and that I should tell them to cancel the request and release the
rooms.

Thanks,
BLS

[9fans] IWP9 Housing

2024-01-25 Thread Brian L. Stuart
The housing situation for IWP9 this year in Philadelphia is not
ideal. It seems there's a big volleyball tournament in town at the
same time, so many hotels have little availability and they're
able to charge high rates. However, we have had one that has said
they can reserve a block of rooms for us at $200/night. That is
the Club Quarters hotel. While it's not super close to campus,
it's close enough to the subway that you won't need to plan on
lots of Uber. As is commonly the case, we'll have to guarantee at
least 80% of the number of rooms we have them reserve to be
occupied. We also need to get the block reserved pretty soon as I
don't know how long they'll be able to hold some openings for us.

So I'd like to get a headcount of how many rooms we're likely to
use. Send me a reply and let me know if you are likely to reserve
a room in the block at Club Quarters at the $200 rate.

Thanks,
BLS

[9fans] IWP9 10th Edition

2023-11-15 Thread Brian L. Stuart
The Plan 9 Foundation and the Workshop Program Committee are
pleased to invite participation in the 10th International
Workshop on Plan 9.  This event will take place April 12-14,
2024 on the campus of Drexel University in Philadelphia.  We
invite submission of papers, works in progress (WiPs), and
workshop proposals.  Everyone interested in Plan 9 and
related technologies is encouraged to attend.

To assist in your planning, a few key dates include:
January 30, 2024: Submission Deadline
March 10, 2024: Preferred Registration Deadline (later
registrations will be accepted)
April 12-14, 2024: The Workshop
We will be following up with details on hotels.

For complete details, see the Call for Papers at:

https://www.cs.drexel.edu/~bls96/iwp9_2024_cfp.pdf

A special note on scheduling: the workshop falls on the
weekend following the upcoming total solar eclipse on April
8, 2024. Although we will not have totality in Philadelphia,
the path of totality is reachable from Philadelphia in less
than a day's driving time. So take advantage of the
scheduling to experience both one of nature's most amazing
events and discussions of computing's most amazing operating
system.

Hi,

We're going to get the shirts for iwp9 printed soon.

If you didn't register yet, you'll need to register
before Apr 5 in order to get a shirt. Include your
shirt size when you register.

If you already registered, but didn't send in your
shirt size, you'll need to get the shirt size to
me by Apr 5th.

If you are not attending or otherwise involved, you
don't get a shirt.

"Camera-ready" is a publishing term which means the document is fully
typeset and ready to be printed. It dates from the days of photo-offset
printing, where you'd photograph a document and make printing plates
from the film negative.

Hi Ori,

A question on iwp9 popped up in the Discord that I can't find an answer to
(though I may be missing it), and I figured it'd be good for the mailing
list as well:

Will this iwp9 be filmed?

I see in the "important dates" the "Camera-ready version" for March 13th,
but I'm not sure what that refers to.

Looking forward to it,

Marshall

[9fans] IWP9 planning update

2020-04-02 Thread Jeff Sickel
9fans:

The progress of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has
required the 9th International Workshop on Plan 9 organization
committee to acknowledge that holding the workshop in 2020
will not be practical. We will work with our hosts at
University of Waterloo to reschedule at an appropriate time,
hopefully in June 2021.

Refunds will be arranged for those who have already signed
up for the June 2020 workshop.

Please use this time to stay healthy and prepare a paper and
participate in the future 9th International Workshop on Plan 9.

[9fans] IWP9 Delayed

2020-03-15 Thread ori
In light of the COVID-19 situation, IWP9 will be rescheduled.
Right now, we don't know how bad things will get or how long
it will take to stabilize. As a result, we don't have a new
date yet. But this event will be happening.

We'll give you more information by April 18th. We hope that
this update will contain a date.

In the meanwhile, we're going to make the following changes:

1) While we'd prefer that people present in person, we'll
   accept remote presentations.

2) Since we've been granted more time, the paper submission
deadline has been extended to at least May 3rd.

Refunds are available for the people who can't make it.

Thanks for your patience, and we hope you'll all still be
able to attend.

Stay healthy.

It's a pretty long drive from Atlanta to Athens. Get a hotel in
Athens, or use Airbnb, or something, or else you'll spend 2+ hours a
day hating yourself as you sit in traffic.

both fixed. anything else?

commuting from atl is technically feasible, but not recommended.
atlanta is big, so one-way commute times are generally in the 1-2 hr
range. also, i don't think it's opinion to say that there's more and
better nightlife for our type of crowd in athens. terrapin brewing,
the georgia theater, trapeze, the globe, blue sky, allgood, etc.
all great stuff.

there's a nice shuttle to athens from the airport that leaves hourly.
http://www.groometransportation.com/
so there's no need to rent a car.

ah, the college football fans. they're fine. they just fill up the hotels,
excercise their god-given right to say spiteful things about the
opponents, and get just a tad excitable

i just saw a video with time shear, (x',y',t') = (x,y,t-y). it's like that
except (x',y',t') = (x,y,t-x). x increases as you go west. we think

On this continent anything beyond the date of expiration is
considered old. The typical date of expiration of a house is
30yrs (conveniently in line with the typical mortgage on a
new construction).

Our neighbor's house in New Castle, NH, USA was built in 1647. It's one

Thanks to Erik for the compliments concerning iwp9 :-)
I am glad you enjoyed the workshop and thank you for your comments throughout
the workshop.

As I like flying, I would actually consider flying into the local Athens
Airport, IATA:
AHN, ICAO: KAHN
(IATA uses 3 letter codes - that is the codes used, e.g., on your baggage tags.
All
commercial airports have an IATA code. ICAO uses a 4 letter code, which is used
to identify
airfields, e.g., in flight plans. All airports and most smaller airfields have
an ICAO
code. Farm strips and often do not.)

Pacific Wings has two daily flights between the local airport and Atlanta
Hartsfield.
