Indigenous prosthesis helps woman walk again

Pune: Deepali Patil (26), who was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for the
last five years, underwent hip replacement surgery five days ago at Pune's
Sancheti Hospital. And now, she can walk thanks to the indigenous method
developed by city-based orthopaedic surgeon K.H. Sancheti.
This new prosthesis, called Innovis Hip, uses ceramic on ceramic prosthesis for
hip and knee replacements. This is a joint effort by Dr. Sancheti and
Kolkata-based Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI).
According to Dr. Sancheti, the cost of ceramic on ceramic will be one-fourth
the cost of the existing imported prosthesis.
Two surgeries were conducted in the city in the last week using Innovis Hip.
Indranil Manna, Director of CGCRI, said that this innovation is a result of 10
years of effort put in by Dr. Sancheti and the CGCRI. "It is one of the finest
developments our laboratory has made till now," he said.
He said that using ceramic is helpful because the body adapts to it quickly and
more easily.
Dr. Sancheti said that this method will be less painful and will not require
any other surgery. "The wear and tear of the new prosthesis is negligible," he
said. According to simulation studies, it will allow patients to walk within
four days.
Innovis Hip will undergo clinical trials in about 10 centres in the country for
six months after which it will be submitted to the Food and Drug Association
(FDA), Dr. Sancheti told presspersons.
