Dear all Access Indians, It was excitement galore! Best of the iron-horses were
lined up at NAB-PNM Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind in Mount Abu on
Wednesday for second car rally, where drivers were sighted, but the navigators
were visually-challenged. The cars had begun whirring as their respective
drivers kept testing the accelerator. Rotary Club of Mount Abu president Deepak
Singhal and his visually-challenged deputy secretary Dr. Vimal Kumar Dengla
could be seen attending to last minute rushes. Chairman of the centre KN
Contractor was there all eager to see his visually-challenged wards in perfect
shape and spirit raring to win the race to be awarded by sumptuous victuals by
the scion of royal family of Sirohi Daivat Singh in his Kesar Bhavan Palace
Heritage Hotel. On a beautiful morning, SDM Jitendra Kumar Soni had consented
to whistle off the rally. He was not ready to have the whistle, rather desired
to use his fingers and his lips. But a whistle was handed over to him to
do the needful. Merrily, he blew the whistle and the cars, drivers and their
visually-challenged navigators with Braille route maps were charged with
high-octane adrenalin. The first stop was the Telephone Exchange, where they
had to alight from their vehicle and find the route on foot for a distance. The
referees were already stationed there while the flying squad headed by Dr.
Dengla was there to hand over Braille directions for further journey.
Travelling from Dhundhai in advance to Kesar Bhavan Palace. The first to arrive
there was the team headed by visually-challenged navigator Surendra Singh
followed by others soon after. All of them were rewarded by Daivat Singh with
gorgeous victuals, a blend of continental and traditional. What a
spine-chilling experience it must have been to those virtual drivers and the
organizers alike! The organizers of such a car rally deserve a great
appreciation for promoting social awareness and vitalizing the confidence of
visually-challenged part
 icipants.
The cricket is never blinded by the sand of its burrowing! Nigerian Proverb.
Warm regards.
David Richards.
