*Stephanie Wolf declined offers of help with disabled daughter Sam*

*A SEVERELY disabled young woman may have starved to death after her mother
and sole carer died leaving her unable to raise the alarm.*

The bodies of Stephanie Wolf, 67, and her daughter Sam, 29, were found in
their home in a partially decomposed state.

The alarm was raised after flies were noticed swarming out of the letterbox
at the weekend. Police discovered the pair on Saturday. A neighbour who
refused to be named said Mrs Wolf was a recluse who devoted herself to
caring for her wheelchair-bound daughter after refusing help from social
services.

It is understood Mrs Wolf, who gave her daughter round-the-clock care, died
suddenly in her bed at the house about six weeks ago.

Her 29-year-old quadriplegic daughter was discovered in the living room of
their three-bedroom £250,000 home. A post-mortem examination revealed
neither suffered any external injuries and police were not looking for
anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Another line of inquiry police were investigating, according to sources, was
whether Mrs Wolf killed her daughter before committing suicide.

Residents of the Hertfordshire village of Wheathampstead, where she had
lived for over 30 years, said she had withdrawn from village life and
treated her disabled daughter like “a baby”, driving her around in a
specially adapted van. The woman, who declined to be named, said: “She was a
recluse and never got involved in village life.

“She treated her disabled daughter like a baby. I once saw her washing her
in a child’s paddling pool in the garden. It was a bit strange but she was
clearly a very loving mother.”

Three years ago Mrs Wolf emblazoned the roof of her bungalow with a huge
“Help” sign, according to neighbours, but repeatedly refused assistance from
Hertfordshire County Council. Yesterday one neighbour said: “It was bizarre
when the banner went up and I don’t know if police or social services looked
into it.

“The trouble was Stephanie was a very private person, who could be very
dismissive and unapproachable if you tried to talk to her.” A spokesman for
the county council said: “We were aware of the family but they refused our
offer of services.

“In August 1998, an assessment of need resulted in the provision of
equipment and major adaptations to the property to provide disability
access. Following on from this, various offers of support offered by Adult
Care Services were declined. She said she was happy to be the sole carer and
wanted to be left alone.”

Hertfordshire Police said: “Two post mortems were conducted on Monday to
establish the cause of death.

“Initial results suggest that neither woman sustained any external injuries
or were victims of violence prior to their death.

“Forensic tests to establish the causes of death for both are ongoing.
Detectives believe the circumstances surrounding the two deaths are not
suspicious and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the
tragedy.”

Man sits near parents' bodies for 4 days

July 31--MUMBAI -- A 42-year-old mentally ill man sat next to his parents'
bodies in their 2BHK flat in Bangur Nagar, Goregaon, for four days before
the police discovered the bodies on Friday.

When Goregaon police rang the door-bell on a second-floor flat at Nand
Bhuvan building, Jawahar Nagar, the door was opened by Sujit Nair.

What he seemed unaware of was that his parents -- Rajan Nair (80) and
Chandralekha (75) -- had died some time ago, though their bodies lay on the
floor in the living room itself.

He had assumed that they were sleeping, and not only kept tea and biscuits
next to the bodies but had even massaged their feet and applied oil to them.

"The couple's only son, Sujit is reportedly suffering from acute
schizophrenia," said additional commissioner of police (north region) Ramrao
Pawar. Earlier an employee with a noted firm, Sujit reportedly developed
mental problems after suffering an accident 22 years ago and has been at
home ever since.

The police said that they reached the spot after residents of the building
informed them about a foul smell emanating from the flat.

"Prima facie, the couple seem to have died of natural causes as there were
no external injuries on the bodies, which were in a decomposed state. The
bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and the exact cause of the deaths can
be determined only after the report is out," said senior inspector S
Paithankar of Goregaon police station.

The neighbours told the police that they had seen Sujit going out to buy
milk and eatables in the last four days but did not suspect anything.

Police said the couple suffered a host of ailments, including diabetes.
Rajan Nair was a retired government employee, neighbours said.

According to neighbours, the couple would rarely step out of their home,
sometimes not being seen for 20 to 30 days at a stretch.

"Even though the couple has stayed here for the past 40 years, they did not
interact with us," a neighbour said, on condition of anonymity.

The Nair family has relatives scattered across the city, but no one visited
them, neighbours said.

"The family rarely interacted with their relatives," said an officer from
Goregaon police station.

One of their relatives called up three days ago and asked about
Chandralekha, but Sujit is said to have told him that "Mama was sleeping".

When asked what would happen to Sujit now, Addl CP Ramrao Pawar said he
would have to be sent to an asylum as he suffers from a mental illness.

The mentally challenged son Sujit, 42, of the senior couple whose decomposed
bodies were found in their Goregaon flat on Friday, was questioned under
observation of experts. He told police officials that his mother
Chandralekha Nair, 72, was in her bedroom when she died in her sleep. His
father, Rajan Nair, 80, died due to shock when he saw her, he said.

Inspector Surendra Paithankar of Goregaon police station said,

“Sujit’s mother was diabetic and his father was suffering from several
ailments. Hence, both of them rarely stepped outside their house. We have
handed over their bodies to their relatives after the post-mortem. To know
the exact cause of death, we have sent their viscera to the forensic lab in
Kalina.”

Mumbai, Aug. 1 -- A day after the police found a mentally ill man sitting
next to the bodies of his elderly parents, he has been admitted to the
psychiatric department at JJ Hospital.

On Friday, residents of Nand Bhuvan building at Goregoan complained to the
police about a foul smell emanating from the flat. The police rang the
doorbell and when no one responded, they broke open the door to find Sujit
Nair (42), who is suffering from schizophrenia, sitting next to the bodies
of his parents Rajan (80) and Chandralekha (75).

They had died around four days ago. A police official said that Sujit, who
is currently under the observation, told the police that his mother had
slipped in the living room and died.

Hearing the thud, his father who was bathing came rushing outside and he too
died of shock. The police official added that Sujit was probably so
traumatised after the incident that he did not consider his parents dead.

"He was serving them tea and biscuits for the four days when they lay dead.
He also used to apply ointment on his mother's wounds on her legs," said
Senior Police Inspector Surendra Paithankar of Goregaon police station.

The Goregaon police found anti-depressants at the Nairs residence. The
police suspect the couple took the medication because of their ailments and
the condition of their only son Sujit.

Chandralekha was suffering from diabetes and had stopped going out of the
house since a few years. Even Rajan was suffering from several ailments, the
police said.

The police official added that they will try and take Sujit's statement
under the observation of experts. However, they will not completely rely on
his version given his mental condition.

Anil Singh, son of the landlord of the building in which the Nairs stayed,
said, "The Nairs were very soft spoken. I often met Rajan uncle who
sometimes used to be in a lively mood and sometimes said that he was fed up
of his life.

" The bodies have been handed over to the relatives on Saturday, said the
police.

relatives to take care of mentally ill man

Mumbai, Aug. 3 -- The relatives of Sujit Nair (42), who sat near the bodies
of his parents Rajan (80) and Chandralekha (75) for four days, have taken
him to their home after he was admitted to JJ Hospital for two days.

According to the neighbours and the police, Sujit has been suffering from
schizophrenia for the past 20 years. The police said that Sujit was under
medication.

After his parents died, nobody was there to give him medicines due to which
his condition worsened and he couldn't understand that his parents were
dead, said the police. "We have found around 900 anti depression tablets at
their residence.

Also, all the three used to take anti depressants," said a police official
on condition of anonymity. The police have ruled out foul play and said that
the couple had died due to natural cause.

"We are waiting for the chemical analysis only after which the exact cause
of the death can be ascertained," said Senior Inspector S Paithankar of
Goregaon police station.
