I bought a pulse oxy meter from them last month and was able to make the

[AI] Kellogg’s Makes Cereal Boxes Designed for the Blind with Inclusive Packaging

2020-10-21 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

FYI:
This cereal box features a UK-first technology that a smartphone
detects and reads aloud the labelling and allergen information to
people with sight loss.
The first-of-its-kind packaging was created in partnership with the
Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), following research
that revealed that nine in 10 blind and partially sighted people feel
the info on food packaging is difficult or impossible to read.
The breakfast cereal company is rolling out boxes of Kellogg’s Coco
Pops in almost 60 Co-op stores across the UK that have been fitted
with a technology called NaviLens.
NaviLens is a printed code similar to a QR code, but in
high-contrasting colored squares on a black background that is
detected by a smartphone camera from up to 12 metres away when pointed
in the general direction of the cereal box, rather than the exact
position.
As users sweep the environment with a smartphone, audio cues allow
them to find and centre the tag in the phone’s field of view. A shake
of the wrist prompts a phone app to read aloud the ingredients,
allergen and recycling information on the box. Shoppers also have the
choice to read the info on the phone using accessibility tools.
This is the first time NaviLens has been used on food packaging or in
the UK. The technology is currently used across Barcelona, Madrid, and
Murcia city’s transport systems, making the cities easier to navigate
for thousands of visually impaired citizens.
If successful, the breakfast cereal giant hopes to adapt more of its
cereal boxes to include this technology.
The limited edition Coco Pops cereal boxes are also embossed with
braille and the on-pack information is in a larger font size.
“Over two million people in the UK live with sight loss and are unable
to simply read the information on our cereal boxes. That’s why we
partnered with RNIB to trial special boxes of Coco Pops with NaviLens
technology, a first for food packaging,” said Chris Silcock,
Kellogg’s MD.
Marc Powell, strategic accessibility lead at RNIB, added, “Important
information on packaging can often be in very small print, making it
difficult for blind and partially sighted people to read,”
“This can make shopping a real challenge, especially for those with
specific dietary requirements – as they can’t see the all-important
nutritional information.”
“This trial with Kellogg’s using NaviLens technology has raised the
bar in inclusive and accessible packaging design – allowing people
with low or no vision to locate a product on the shelf and access all
information about it completely independently for the very first
time.”

[AI] STRAP Technologies Announces Wearable Device to Help Blind People Navigate Without a White Cane

2020-10-21 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

STRAP Technologies announced on White Cane Safety Day in the United
States, the creation of a hands-free device designed to be worn by the
visually impaired to allow for more independence and mobility.
STRAP is a wearable, hands-free device with an innovative array of
sensors that work by sending real-time information that detect
obstacles at the head, chest and below — including oncoming bumps,
holes, overhanging objects and steps. The haptic language
notifications also make STRAP an intuitive device to use and easy to
learn in less than two minutes. STRAP is designed for all ages and
abilities, and offers obstacle detection, stair detection, advanced
haptic feedback, straight line navigation and orientation. It can also
distinguish between physical objects and people. The device once
charged can last up to 72 hours and is easy to recharge with a
magnetic charger provided.
The device was first developed in Mexico by STRAP Technologies CEO and
Founder, Diego Roel, who comes from an extensive background in
robotics, new product ideation, R and IP strategy. “STRAP is the
first assistive technology on the market that replaces the white cane
that’s been in use for over 100 years,” Roel said.
“We’ve spent three years on the research and development of STRAP to
invent a product that is truly innovative. We are really passionate
about changing the way the blind and visually impaired explore the
world; our core mission is that we believe autonomy and independence
is a human right; not a luxury.”
STRAP Technologies is headquartered in Austin, Texas, with a Research
and Development lab in Guadalajara, Mexico.
STRAP is now available for preorder
https://strap.tech/preorder.php
at an introductory price of $500 with a $50 deposit.

She had the vision to break the stereotype
With two gold medals in MA Political Science, visually challenged

of University of Mysore on the occasion of its centenary convocation
on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after receiving the certificates from Deputy
Chief Minister and Pro Chancellor of the University C.N. Ashwath
Narayan, Ms. Bhat said most visually challenged students had been told
that music was the only field for them to engage in. But, she wished
to break the stereotype by choosing political science and excelling in
it.
Ms. Bhat, who was accompanied by her mother Ravikala Bhat, said she
had completed her education in music as per father’s desire. But, she
said she was badly missing her father, whom she lost recently.
However, challenging it is for visually impaired persons to lead a
normal life, Ms. Bhat said she does not wish to depend on anybody to
lead her life. She said she wished to lead a normal life.
She said she wrote the examinations of all the four semesters on a
computer without the assistance of any scribe. She aspires for a
career in teaching.
