[AI] Free yourself from oppression by technology

2010-04-20 Thread Sanjay
That new phone or laptop may be giving you a warm glow, but beware
a stealth attack on your happiness, warns Yair Amichai-Hamburger

by Yair Amichai-Hamburger

THE age of melancholy is how psychologist Daniel Goleman describes
our era. People today experience more depression than previous
generations, despite the technological wonders that help us every day.
It might be because of them.

Our lifestyles are increasingly driven by technology. Phones,
computers and the internet pervade our days. There is a constant,
nagging need to check for texts and email, to update Facebook, MySpace
and LinkedIn profiles, to acquire the latest notebook or 3G cellphone.

Are we being served by these technological wonders or have we become
enslaved by them? I study the psychology of technology, and it seems
to me that we are sleepwalking into a world where technology is
severely affecting our well-being. Technology can be hugely useful in
the fast lane of modern living, but we need to stop it from taking
over.

For many of us it is becoming increasingly difficult to control the
impulse to check our inbox yet again or see whether the headlines have
changed since we last looked. Our children are in a similar position,
scared to miss a vital Tweet or status update on Facebook. In many
homes, the computer has become the centre of attention; it is the
medium through which we work and play.

How did this arise, and what is it doing to us? In this era of mass
consumption, we are surrounded by advertising that urges us to find
fulfilment through the acquisition of material goods. As a result,
adults and children increasingly believe that in order to belong and
feel good about themselves, they must own the latest model or gadget.

Yet research by psychologist Tim Kasser of Knox College in
Galesburg, Illinois, has shown that people who place a high value on
material goals are unhappier than those who are less materialistic.
Materialism is also associated with lower self-esteem, greater
narcissism, greater tendency to compare oneself unfavourably with
other people, less empathy and more conflict in relationships.
People who place a high value on material goals are unhappier than
those who are less materialistic

Our culture also constantly reminds us that time is money. This
implies a need for total efficiency, which is why we are allowing
laptop computers and mobile phones to blur the separation between work
and home. As one unhappy human-resource manager in a high-tech company
put it: They gave me a mobile phone so they can own me 24 hours a
day, and a portable computer, so my office is now with me all the time
- I cannot break out of this pressure. Sound familiar?

Psychologists generally believe that the lack of a clear separation
between work and home significantly damages our relationships with
loved ones. It also predisposes us to focus on the here and now at the
expense of long-term goals.

By imposing these twin pressures, modern society is in danger of
swapping standard of living for quality of life. We need ways to help
recover those increasingly large parts of our lives that we have ceded
to technology, to regain mastery over technology and learn to use it
in a healthy and positive way.

My prescription is self-determination theory, developed by
psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan of the University of
Rochester in New York state. It identifies three vital elements of
healthy personal development and functioning which I think can be used
to recalibrate our relationship with technology.

The first is autonomy - the feeling that our activities are
self-chosen and self-endorsed. When we feel in control, we are able to
organise our priorities and place effective boundaries around them.
But when we feel we have insufficient control, it leaves us vulnerable
to our impulses and causes us to abdicate decisions to other people.
It is easy to see how technology undermines autonomy, but also how to
regain it. This may be as simple as switching off mobile phones during
meals and family time, setting aside specific times to answer emails,
and being available only when we choose to be.

We also need a sense of competence, a belief that our actions are
effective. In this respect our relationship with technology is
complex, because many of us feel competent when we deal with an email,
when we have the newest BlackBerry, or because 50 people enjoyed the
holiday snaps we posted on Facebook. But being truly competent must be
a continuation of our autonomy: knowing which activities are important
to us and carrying them out in the most effectual way possible, making
use of technology where applicable.

The other factor is relatedness: our need to feel close to other
people. Technology is a threat to this. Devices like the iPod can be
used to create a bubble that disconnects us from normal human
interactions, and while some virtual relationships may be truly
meaningful, in many cases they come at the expense of

[AI] Smart CCTV learns to spot suspicious types

Smart CCTV learns to spot suspicious types
Video-analysis software can follow people from camera to camera in
busy public places and identify those who are behaving
  suspiciously

by Nic Fleming

WHAT'S the difference between a suicide bomber and a cleaner? It
sounds like the opening line of a sick joke, but for computer
scientists working on intelligent video-surveillance software, being
able to make that distinction is a key goal.

Current CCTV systems can collect masses of data, but little of it is
used, says Shaogang Gong, a computer-vision computation researcher
at Queen Mary, University of London. What we really need are better
ways to mine that data, he says.

Gong is leading an international team of researchers to develop a
next-generation CCTV system, called Samurai, which is capable of
identifying and tracking individuals that act suspiciously in crowded
public spaces. It uses algorithms to profile people's behaviour,
learning about how people usually behave in the environments where it
is deployed. It can also take changes in lighting conditions into
account, enabling it to track people as they move from one camera's
viewing field to another.

To improve the tracking of an individual at an airport, the system can
also learn the routes people are likely to take - straight from the
entrance to check-in, say. It can even follow a target as they move in
a crowd, using the characteristic shape of the person, their luggage
and the people they are walking with, to follow them as they walk
between different camera views.

Samurai is designed to issue alerts when it detects behaviour that
differs from the norm, and adjusts its reasoning based on feedback. So
an operator might reassure the system that the person with a mop
appearing to loiter in a busy thoroughfare is no threat. When another
person with a mop exhibits similar behaviour, it will remember that
this is not a situation that needs flagging up.

While video analysis tools already exist, they tend to operate
according to rigid, predefined rules, says Gong, and cannot follow a
large number of people across multiple cameras situated in busy public
spaces.

The Samurai team last month demonstrated the system to commercial
partners including BAA Airports in the UK. The researchers claim the
prototype system successfully identified potential threats which may
have been missed by human operators, using footage collected at
Heathrow airport. The Samurai team has funding to continue refining
their software until the end of 2011.

The use of relevant feedback from human operators will be a very
important part of these technologies, says Paul Miller, of
Queen's University's Centre for Secure Information Technologies in
Belfast, UK, who is leading a project to develop a video-analysis
system capable of predicting assaults on buses. The key is developing
learning algorithms that work not only in the lab but that are robust
in real-world applications.

[AI] Motion-sensing phones that predict your every move

2010-04-20 Thread Sanjay
Phones that learn their user's patterns of behaviour can use this
information to provide a cheaper, more reliable service

by Paul Marks

COULD your cellphone learn to predict what you are going to do before
you've even started doing it?

Communications engineer Arjen Peddemors thinks so, and along with
colleagues at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands he
has devised a system that learns users' behaviour patterns to provide
them with an enhanced cellphone service. It could, for example,
prevent the phone starting large downloads such as music tracks or
podcasts when your behaviour suggests you are about to go out of
network range.

Such prediction has become possible because smartphones like the Nokia
N97 and Apple iPhone contain accelerometers that sense motion. They
are normally used to reorient images when the screen is flipped from
vertical to horizontal, or by software that responds to a shake of the
phone. But Peddemors realised that they also generate a data stream
that reflects every move the phone's owner makes.

Routine events such as going to work are likely always to involve
similar sequences of actions: locking the front door, opening the
garage, getting in the car, for instance. The Delft system uses
telltale sequences and timings like this to create an electronic
signature of particular events.

A neural network software app running on the phone is then trained to
predict what happens next and act accordingly. So if your regular
drive to work takes you through a particular phone cell, the going to
work signature could trigger the software to negotiate with the
cellphone network to ensure that the cell will have the 3G capacity to
maintain your streaming music channel as you drive through it.

Peddemors says his team's idea of predicting these mobility events
(Pervasive and Mobile Computing)
could prove especially useful in situations when safeguarding against
loss of data is critical, such as in the emerging field of cellphone
transmission of vital physiological data from heart-rate and
blood-pressure sensors. By predicting the patient's movements, the
upload of that critical data won't be attempted unless their behaviour
says it can be completed, he says.
The upload of critical data won't be attempted unless your behaviour
says it can be completed

The system makes possible an interesting set of applications, says
Ian Brown, a privacy and security specialist at the Oxford Internet
Institute in the UK. But to ensure the user benefits from them - and
not, say, behavioural advertisers or law-enforcement personnel - the
data needs to stay firmly under the control of the individual using
it.

[AI] The future of the PC

2010-04-20 Thread Sanjay

SuperSpeed USB, HTML5, 3D TV, augmented reality and faster Wi-Fi are five new
technologies that could change technology as we know it. Glenn Fleishman takes
a glimpse into the future of the PC

While sipping a cup of organically farmed, artisan-brewed tea, I tap on my
gigabit wireless tablet PC and pull up a 3D film on the razor-thin HDTV hanging
on the wall. A media server streams the film via a SuperSpeed USB connection to
a wireless HD transmitter, which then beams it to the TV. That actor - who
was he? My augmented-reality contact lenses pick up the unique eye motion I
make when I have a query, which I then enter on a virtual keyboard that appears
in the space in front of me. Immediately my field of vision is filled with a
web page showing a list of the actor's movies, complete with embedded video
clips.

It all sounds like the film 'Minority Report', but the only far-fetched part
is the idea that we'd dump our good old-fashioned cuppa. Tomorrow's
computing and entertainment promise subtle but important changes in our
relationship with the digital world around us.

Speed and content (much of it video) will be paired consistently across mobile,
laptop, desktop and home-entertainment systems. New ways of using video -
including adding 3D depth or artificial visual overlays - will require more
speed, storage and computational power.

And the technologies that will provide the connective tissue are just around the
corner. USB 3.0, 802.11ax and 802.11ad will move media - particularly video
- faster, while HTML5 will display content of all kinds consistently across
all devices from PC and laptop to smartphone, digital TV and more.

Augmented reality, meanwhile, will become reality, overlaying what we're
accustomed to viewing with graphics and text. On top of this, 3D TV will give
television programmes image depth and believability - and in far more
convincing fashion than Channel 4's recent 3D TV showcase week.

Here's how the most world-changing technologies of the next three years will
fit in.

USB 3.0

As we reported in our Jan 09 issue ( page 20), SuperSpeed USB is about to
launch, ramping up the transfer rate of your most heavily used PC port to 4.8
gigabits per second (Gbps). And, crucially, you can use current USB 2.0 devices
with the newer jacks. Additional pins on USB 3.0 sockets boost the data
transfers by a factor of 10.

While not the sexiest-sounding concept, USB 3.0 will ratchet up the capabilities
and cut the cables of the technology built into all present-day PCs and most
mobile devices; in other words, it should have a huge effect. Add uncompressed
video transfers and you're in a whole new realm.

Imagine you're about to leave work and you need to back up your computer. You
push a button and, a few minutes later, while you're still packing up, your
system has dumped 150GB of data on to an encrypted 512GB super-fast solid-state
drive (SSD). You take the disk with you for offsite backup.

On your way home, you stop at a kiosk in the town centre to buy a feature-length
3D video download. You plug in your drive, the kiosk checks your credentials
and, within 90 seconds, the 30GB video transfers on to your SSD. You pull out
the drive and head home.

Any task that involves transferring data between your PC and a peripheral device
will be far faster with USB 3.0. In many cases, in fact, the transfer will be
complete before you even realise it's started.

USB 3.0, christened SuperSpeed by the USB Implementors Forum (USB-IF), is on
track to deliver more than 3.2Gbps of actual throughput. It will be five to ten
times faster than other standard desktop peripheral standards, except some
flavours of DisplayPort and the increasingly out-offavour eSATA. USB 3.0 can
shoot full-speed data in both directions at the same time, too.

USB 3.0 jacks will accept 1.0 and 2.0 plug ends for backward compatibility, but
3.0 cables will work only with 3.0 jacks. This technology could be a
game-changer for device connectivity.

One device does it all

Today's desktop PCs include jacks to accommodate ethernet, USB 2.0, FireWire,
DVI, DisplayPort and eSATA. USB 3.0 could eliminate all these except ethernet.
In their place, a PC may have several USB 3.0 ports, delivering data to
monitors, retrieving it from scanners and exchanging it with hard drives. The
improved speed capabilities come at a good time, as much faster flash memory
drives are in the pipeline.

USB 3.0 is fast enough to allow uncompressed 1080p video to stream at 60fps,
according to Jeff Ravencraft, president of the USB-IF. That would enable a
camcorder to forego video compression hardware and patent licensing fees for
Mpeg4. You could either stream video live from a simple camcorder (with no
video processing required) or store it on an internal drive for later rapid
transfer; neither of these methods is feasible today without heavy compression.

Citing USB 3.0's versatility, some analysts see the standard as a possible
complement -

[AI] Net piracy: The people vs the entertainment industry

2010-04-20 Thread Sanjay
New laws to counter illegal downloading
will be intrusive and
  ineffective, say internet service providers

by Paul Marks

THIS is the kind of snooping you'd expect in China, not a modern
western democracy. It raises huge questions over privacy invasion and
freedom of expression. So says Andrew Heaney - who is not, as you
might imagine, a civil liberties campaigner, but a senior executive at
TalkTalk, one of the UK's largest internet service providers. Along
with other ISPs, his company faces the prospect of being forced to spy
on its customers' downloads for signs of potential copyright
infringement.

Heaney's disquiet is shared by web campaigners worldwide, as the
measures contained in a controversial international copyright
treaty are slowly being translated
into national laws variously tipped to bridge, distract from or widen
the gulf between the entertainment industry's desires and those of the
millions who share copyrighted material over the internet.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), suggested by the US
administration in 2007, aims to redefine global trade rules. The
intention is to stem losses from counterfeiting and internet-mediated
piracy of content like music and movies.

It will do that by penalising internet service providers and websites
that carry, or help people to find, pirated content. ACTA has quickly
proved a hit with G8 nations, the European Union, South Korea and
Australia, who are all using it as a basis for future national laws.

ACTA is still being worked up in secret by trade delegations from the
many nations involved. But a series of leaks to the Wikileaks website
reveal that it will require ISPs to become technological sleuths who
monitor their customers' internet use to deter unauthorised storage
and transmission of infringing content. Infringers will face a
graduated response, with disconnection as the ultimate sanction.

The Obama administration's plans to implement ACTA are still hidden in
a thicket of non-disclosure agreements with movie studios and record
labels. The UK's Digital Economy Bill, unveiled in last month, is
clearly inspired by ACTA.

The bill stipulates that people who share copyright-infringing content
should receive two warnings by post, after which they will face
punitive technical measures. These may include having their internet
connection filtered to block attempts to download copyrighted
material, throttled to slow downloads to a crawl, or even cut off
entirely. Spain, Ireland and France have similar plans.

ISPs are wary of being seen to invade customers' privacy by sifting
through their personal data - and of the potential costs involved -
though Nicholas Lansman, head of the European ISP Association,
insists that they oppose illicit file sharing.

Monitoring every single packet going across our network for the
fingerprints of hundreds of copyrighted files will require tens of
millions of pounds' worth of computer systems, Heaney warns. Without
that extra computing power, internet access will slow to a crawl.

ISPs would have to scan the contents of every chunk of data, using
what is known as deep packet inspection technology, which is used by
China and Iran to monitor and censor internet communications. But even
if ISPs install such technology, identifying infringers will be far
from straightforward. The EU has ruled that before anyone can be sent
a warning letter, rights holders must take an ISP to court to get the
name and address of an alleged culprit.
ISPs would have to scan every chunk of data with the sort of software
now used by China and Iran

There is evidence that such threats will deter some people from
illicitly sharing content (see Copyright conundrum). Others, though,
will simply seek ways of carrying on regardless.

Freeloading on an unsuspecting neighbour's Wi-Fi connection is one
option - and is possible even if the connection is secured. YouTube
carries videos on how to use free software to sniff the passwords of
protected connections. The ease with which people can borrow Wi-Fi
in this way undermines the assumption that the owner of a connection
can be blamed for everything downloaded by it. The government knows
there is a wireless hijacking risk but they haven't proposed a process
by which people can be assumed innocent until proven guilty, says
Heaney.

The mobile broadband connections provided via cellphones or computer
USB sticks offer another loophole to the disconnected. Mobile
providers do not assign IP addresses to users as fixed line providers
do, so it's not possible to track file sharing to individuals.

These problems are exacerbated by changes in sharing technology.
BitTorrent, the most popular file-sharing protocol, used to depend on
central websites to host trackers - small files that tell software
where to find particular files. The Pirate Bay site in Sweden was the
most popular tracker host, but it recently shut down after a
refinement to the

[AI] Five ways to revolutionise computer memory

2010-04-20 Thread Sanjay
You can store all your music on a personal MP3 player - which
technology will do the same for your high-definition movie
  collection?

by Joerg Heber

Once upon a time, not so long ago, the idea that you might store your
entire music collection on a single hand-held device would have been
greeted with disbelief. Ditto backing up all your essential computer
files using a memory stick key ring, or storing thousands of
high-resolution holiday snaps in one pocket-sized camera.

What a difference a decade makes. The impossible has become possible
thanks to the lightning rise of a memory technology with the
snazzy name of flash.

So where is the technology that can store our high-definition home
cinema collection on a single chip? Or every book we would ever want
to read or refer to? Flash can't do that. In labs across the world,
though, an impressive array of technologies is lining up that could
make such dreams achievable.

These supermemories are close to realising a vision set out by
revered physicist Richard Feynman 50 years ago this month. In a
lecture to the American Physical Society entitled There's plenty
of room at the bottom, he asked whether it might ever be possible to
write all 24 volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica on a pin head.
Each tiny ink dot used to print each letter would have to be reduced
to the size of just 1000 atoms, he calculated - a square with sides of
just 9 nanometres.

Feynman speculated that people looking back from the year 2000 would
wonder why it took till 1960 before we began to explore this room at
the bottom - what we now know as the nanoscale. Late start or not,
the progress in miniaturising information storage in the decades since
has been stunning. Today, the smallest feature that can store a bit of
information is some 40 nanometres across in commercial flash devices.
The first flash chips capable of storing 64 gigabits of
information were shipped just a couple of months ago.

The kinds of technologies Feynman was talking about, though, would fit
terabytes of data on a single chip. That requires a design simpler
even than the already admirably straightforward flash architecture
(see Flash: memory hero). The mechanism for reading and writing
the memory would also have to be reliable and, above all, fast, taking
just nanoseconds. And the memory should be stable: once written, it
should not degrade for at least a decade.

That is quite a shopping list. Whatever technology fits the bill will
not be flash, but it will be mightily impressive. It won't be easy
establishing it, with flash already so well entrenched, but with the
market for memory chips worth something between $20 billion and $30
billion, you can bet it won't be too long before one or more of the
technologies described in this feature is sitting inside devices in
our pockets. Before that happens, though, the runners and riders in
the supermemory steeplechase have just a few hurdles to clear.

MRAM
The longest-standing pretender to flash's crown is magnetoresistive
random access memory, or MRAM. Under development by several companies
since the 1990s, MRAM chips store information within two thin layers
of magnetic material, each divided into a grid of cells. One layer is
a permanent magnet whose direction of magnetisation does not change.
The other is a temporary magnet whose magnetisation can be flipped 180
degrees by applying a small magnetic field or electrical current. The
relative alignment of the two layers' magnetisations determines
whether a bit is set to 1 or 0 (Science, vol 308, p 508).

MRAM's use of magnetisation is both its strength and its weakness: its
strength because magnetisation is fast and easy to control, allowing
memory to be written and read in as little as a nanosecond; its
weakness because changing the magnetisation of one cell tends to
affect its neighbours too.

This cross-talk is a tough nut for MRAM researchers to crack. They
haven't really been able to solve the problem yet, says James Scott,
a physicist at the University of Cambridge. At the moment it limits
the size of MRAM chips to 32 megabytes, less than one-thousandth of
the capacity of the best flash devices. Electronics companies such as
Hitachi and Toshiba continue to work on improved designs, maintaining
faith in the potential of electrically controlled MRAM for fast,
high-density memory.

o Size: ?
o Speed: ok
o Stability: ok
o Power consumption: ?
FeRAM
Ferroelectric random access memory, or FeRAM, is a close relative of
flash. Like flash, it uses electrical effects to control a
transistor-like structure. But rather than controlling flows of free
electrons, it takes advantage of the strange distribution of electric
charges found in complex crystals known as ferroelectrics.

In a ferroelectric, small external electrical fields can induce
positively and negatively charged ions in the crystal to shift in
position, creating a stable electrical polarisation not unlike the
field between a

[AI] gmail vows

2010-04-20 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Friends
I can not understand why gmail has brought in about two dozen security dialogue
boxes before one is able to access one's inbox on their site.
I am told that switching to basic html view and setting it as default solves
the problem.
But, I am unable to make it default view.
Any guidance, please.

[AI] Software for creating audiobooks

2010-04-20 Thread apoorv kulkarni
Dear All,
I recently came across a software called “Text aloud” from a company
called “Nextup”. The said software can be used to create audio files
from text/word/pdf files. I am sure many of us would find the same
useful for say, reviewing legal documents, news articles, emails,
ebooks converted into audiobook etc. Bothe Sappy 4 and Sappy 5 voices
are supported by the software. Sappy 5 voices can be purchased from
ATNT and a few other companies. I believe that openbook reader from
freedomscientific is another software which can be a substitute of
text aloud. However I did not have the privilege of using the same.
Hope we all find this info useful.

2010-04-20 Thread K. Nageswaraiah

Hi,
I've been using Nokia E63 for the last 7 months quite successfully. Those who
have typing and/or computer knowledge can master it quickly. Chr key, function
key, edit key, delete key, ctrl key are some of the useful keys in the handset.
Besides, built-in accessibility features such as Voice Aide and say caller's
name are also worth noting. There're one touch keys for emailing, reading new
messages, calendar, contacts, etc. I make good use of the dictionary. But
there're some problems with the arrow keys.

Subject: [AI] Motion-sensing phones that predict your every move

Phones that learn their user's patterns of behaviour can use
this
information to provide a cheaper, more reliable service

by Paul Marks

But to ensure the user benefits from them - and
not, say, behavioural advertisers or law-enforcement personnel - the
data needs to stay firmly under the control of the individual using
it.

That new phone or laptop may be giving you a warm glow, but
beware
a stealth attack on your happiness, warns Yair
Amichai-Hamburger

by Yair Amichai-Hamburger

But being truly competent must be
a continuation of our

Dear All,
I recently came across a software called “Text aloud” from a company
called “Nextup”.

Considering both video and only audio track are both copyright stuff it is
not appropriate to post it here.

With this I request all members not to postany messages providing downloads

With this I close all traffic on this thread.

hello mr shankar,
if your system is showing the error for low memory, then probbably
some of your system settings are not proper or so many tasks or
processes are running. so, one way is to kill the unwanted processes
by the help of ctrl+alt+delete, under the processes tab.
another way is to increase the vertual memory by doing the following
steps. press window+pause, go to the advance tab, then select
performance settings button, then again go to the advance tab page,
and now select the change the virtual memory button and change the
memory uses from inicial memory or maximam memory then press the set
button. hope this helps.

[AI] Strong link between child disability and poverty

that the situation is similar in India as well.

Strong link between child disability and poverty

Randeep Ramesh

Wealthy families in Britain are a third less likely to have a disabled
child, a statistic that reveals an alarming social gradient because
poorer families unlucky enough to have such children are pushed
further into poverty by the pressures of caring for them, according to
research.

Despite 15 years of legislation attempting to ease the burden on
affected families, the highest prevalence of childhood disability is
found in poorest families, academics at Warwick University found.

Extra costs

In the paper, published in the journal BMC Pediatrics, researchers
found that households with a disabled child were £50-a-week worse off
than those without. This is despite the fact that the extra costs of
bringing up a disabled child means families need an extra 18 per cent
in income. Nationally, this amounts to a heavy burden on the 950,000
families identified in the paper as having disabled children.

“We think the official [figures] underestimates the actual numbers by
250,000 ... and the huge inequalities that the paper clearly shows
that is of some concern,” said Clare Blackburn of Warwick University's
school of health and social studies. Disability appears to be not
simply an accident of birth, she said, but a confluence of
“intergenerational poverty” and modern medical progress.

Ms Blackburn said the exact extent to which “factors such as low
income precede or follow disability is difficult to tell, but what we
know is that poor diet and stressful living conditions do increase the
chances of premature birth and low birth weight, which are indicators
of future disability. Thanks to science, these babies live longer and
medicine now keeps alive disabled children who may have died 10, 20
years ago.”

The Warwick researchers point out that debt was more common in those
families with disabled children: the parents were unable to keep up
with any local property taxes, water and telephone bills, and were not
likely to be able to afford basic items such as a family holiday once
a year, a bicycle, or even two pairs of shoes. “It is a serious social
gradient disabled families face,” said Ms Blackburn. “A disabled baby
needs more nappies. Families' ability to work grows difficult, and
finding childcare is a real burden. Households with disabled children
will depend more on social security benefits and are faced with the
additional financial costs associated with caring for a disabled
child.”

Struggling to survive

Doctors said that Andrew Lomax's seven-year-old daughter Emily would
not make it “out of hospital” aged two weeks. Born healthy, she
stopped breathing as a tiny baby and those 20 minutes without oxygen
left her with a severe form of cerebral palsy. She was registered
blind, unable to swallow, walk and breathe without an aspirator, so
her two parents gave up their jobs to look after her and their two
other children.

“Our income is £15,000 a year — about a third of what it was before,”
said Andrew. “It's all [social] benefits, and I am a proud man who
does not like to say it but family holidays come from the kindness of
charities.” Andrew says that he cannot afford to buy his elder son the
Nintendo he craves. He is left scouring local papers for presents. His
income is eaten up by fuel and petrol bills. “We have to keep the
house very warm for Emily, who is susceptible to pneumonia and the
cost of running the specially designed car is prohibitive. It only
does six kilometres per litre. Most months we are hit by bank charges
and missed payments. I try to juggle, but it is robbing Peter to pay
Paul.” — © Guardian Newspapers Limited, 2010

To: blind-international-stude...@nfbnet.org

Greetings!

The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute (S-K), in collaboration with
researchers at Accessible Design for the Blind and U.C. Santa Barbara,
is conducting a survey of tools and techniques used by blind and
visually-impaired people in their every-day lives. We want to know how
you get around, how comfortable you feel in various situations, what
other disabilities you have, and what tools and techniques you use in
your daily travels. By participating in the S-K Wayfinding Survey, you
will extend our knowledge of how real blind and visually-impaired people
travel independently. You will also help to improve the independence of
future travelers with visual disabilities by sharing your experience.

You can participate in the S-K Wayfinding survey on the web, by phone,
or by TTY. The survey should take no more than 20 minutes to complete,
and your responses will be completely confidential. We eagerly look
forward to your participation and thank you in advance for your help.

To take the survey on the web or ask questions about it:

[AI] Disabled-friendly DU? Lack of funds

2010-04-20 Thread Gopalakrishnan
Disabled-friendly DU? Lack of funds blocking progress

Urvashi Sarkar

UGC grant of Rs.5 lakh termed insufficient

NEW DELHI: Many Delhi University colleges are in a poor shape with regard to
accessibility of persons with disabilities. While certain colleges have tried
to remedy the situation, the larger problem is perceived to be insufficient
fundsand communication gap between agencies.

DU's Equal Opportunity Cell had prepared a detailed access audit report in 2007
of the accessibility situation in all colleges and departments and had written
to each of them in early 2009 asking them to do the needful. According to the
UGC XI Plan guidelines on grants to colleges, a one-time grant of Rs.5 lakh
would be given to colleges to improve physical accessibility under one
component of the Higher Education for Persons with Special Needs scheme.

Under the HEPSN, colleges can avail of the one-time grant to address
accessibility related issues and ensure that all existing structures and future
construction projects in their campuses are made disabled-friendly.

Colleges are supposed to write to UGC for the grant following which a UGC team
inspects the college facilities and later the grant is sanctioned.

EOC member Dr. Chandra Nisha Singh said: Some colleges may have received money
under merged funds. Colleges may not be aware that they can draw from the
merged funds to upgrade the college infrastructure for persons with
disabilities.

Five lakh is not enough to bring about quality changes. It will cost about
Rs.40-50 lakh for every college to make its infrastructure accessible for all.
Even installing a lift costs about 10-15 lakh. she added.

Colleges such as Lady Sri Ram, Lakshmibai, Shri Ram College of Commerce,
Khalsa College, Mata Sundri, Gargi, Kamala Nehru, Jesus and Mary College and
some others have already started work. According to Dr. Singh, though all the
colleges had been periodically written to, many were either slow to respond or
had not responded regarding the action taken on the basis of the access audit
report.

Work in progress

The EOC has prepared a list of feedback from various DU colleges regarding the
number of ramps, accessible toilets, tactile paths, blind-friendly software,
elevator, signage and parking that are available in the respective colleges.

Some colleges which are not on the list when individually contacted claimed
that work was in progress but maintained that funding from the UGC was
insufficient.

Miranda House College Principal Dr. Pratibha Jolly said a digital resource
centre and scholarships for visually challenged students, ramps and disabled
friendly toilets had been provided. Lifts and hostel rooms for physically
handicapped students were also being planned for the college. These works are
taking place through our own funds, Dr. Jolly said, adding that though the UGC
had sanctioned funds, they were insufficient.

Daulat Ram College Principal Dr. Kanan Nanda too said that ramps and toilets
had been constructed with further plans for installation of lifts.

Acharya Narendra Dev College Principal Dr. Savitri Singh said: We are among
the 12 DU colleges which are not funded by the UGC but by the Delhi Government.
The funds allotted to us for space development is limited as a result of which
we have not been able to do much.

The PWD which has constructed certain structures for accessibility has not
understood the requirements for design and specifications; consequently EOC
guidelines have not been met with.

Deshbandhu College (Evening) teacher Prof. Bipin Tiwari added: We applied to
the UGC almost a year ago and received the funds only last week. The
lackadaisical approach of the university authorities and the UGC has caused
many colleges to remain inaccessible.

Ramjas College which submitted a detailed report on its accessibility situation
almost eight months ago to the UGC, received a letter sanctioning funds only
recently, Ramjas College Principal Dr. Rajendra Prasad said.

Five lakh is peanuts and no quality changes can be brought about with such
funds. It costs Rs.1.25 lakh just to construct one disabled friendly toilet. We
did make our college disabled-friendly about four years ago. But how long can
colleges use their own funds which are needed for other things too? It is the
duty of the Government to provide funds, he added.

They have mentioned the VI column in the advertisement, but didn’t
mention the reserved posts against this column. I observed they did
mention all the categories of physically challenged columns, but
unfortunately not the posts. Have anybody applied for these posts? If
so, please help me in this regard.

I have been struggling with facebook for the last one week but without any
success.

When I try to open the FB lite, the normal FB window opens instead of the
Facebook lite.
Can any one suggest some tips to use it with Jaws?
Also, Please someone tell me how to write on the wall of a friend.

Thanks,

SN

Set the curser mode to letters. You can do that by pressing talks plus long two.

 Hi,
I've been using Nokia E63 for the last 7 months quite successfully. Those
who have typing and/or computer knowledge can master it quickly. Chr key,
function key, edit key, delete key, ctrl key are some of the useful keys in
the handset. Besides, built-in accessibility features such as Voice Aide
and say caller's name are also worth noting. There're one touch keys for
emailing, reading new messages, calendar, contacts, etc. I make good use of
the dictionary. But there're some problems with the arrow keys.

 Dear sachit,
Many thanks for your guidance on mobile handset. I understand that E
63 is a quarty keypad phone. I was wondering if it is difficult to
master the keypad as we do not have the benefit of sight.
Guidance from the group at large would be helpful.

 Dear Apoorv!

You can go for E63 and N79. Both of these sets are good and talks
 supported.
