Such carelessly used linguistic prous, void of sensitivity and respect, has a potential to push back disabled people in to complete alienation and helplessness. frequent deriding of ability and capability of persons with disabilities by some of the policy-makers is an indication of systamatic attempt by the political class to reduce welfare schemes which are the sole savier for the majority of disabled people. I hope our disability organisations will revert strongly to such statements given by politicians. Dear All There was a query concerning the accessibility at the Thane mall (Viviana). With regards the same I would like to provide some basic information: 1. Viviana is one of India's largest malls, encompassing over 250 stores, which comprises of 19 large mini anchors tenants. Viviana covers three floors of prime retail and leisure space. Viviana boasts of a unique tenant mix – Cinepolis, a megaplex with 14 screens, 19 anchor tenants for the first time in the country and brands like Shoppers Stop, Lifestyle, Marks Spencer, ZARA, Tommy Hilfiger, Lifestyle, Hamleys, Starbucks, Mainland China, Copper Chimney, Pizza Express, British Brewing Company and many others for the first time in Thane. The mall houses Forever 21 for the first time in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. Within 15 months of operations the mall has garnered over 13 accolades in the areas of architecture, mall marketing, design and mall management category. It has an average footfall of around 20,000 per day and over 50,000 on weekends. 2. The mall management is very keen to be proactive with regards the visually challenged and hence has initiated the following steps:a. Work on audio-tactile floor plans so that a blind / low-vision person can at the reception be shown and find out the store he / she wishes to go to. The map has tactile lines with embedded audio labels which can be read with the help of the sonic labeller. A Braille / large font directory will be added shortly.b. To aid navigation, all stores have Braille labels with embedded audio labels. The latter have been programmed to speak out the name of the store. The current plan is to make these audio files available for download onto an individual sonic labeller. A special series of labels have been created so that no duplication happens.c. The mall is in the process of converting all restaurant menus into audio-tactile. 3. An active sensitisation / training of mall staff has started so that blind visitors / customers can have a comfortable experience at the mall. 4. Future plans include:- website upgradation- working with their multiplex to help build in the potential for audio-described movie experience-locating an accessible ATM The basic idea behind the initiative is to ensure that public spaces have accessibility built in. Blind youth clears CA, wants to teach hopes to inspire others TNN | Jan 21, 2015, 11.34 PM IST Mumbai: While clearing the Chartered Accountancy (CA) exam is never a cakewalk for aspirants, for Thane's Rushabh Kapasi, the task was even more daunting. Kapasi (24) suffers from almost 100% vision loss due to a birth defect. He was born with corneal opacity in both eyes. But determined as he was, Kapasi managed to clear his CA with help from his parents and a few readers. As he was not trained in Braille, study material had to be read out to him. He cleared both Group I and II in his third attempt in results declared on Monday. His parents sat with him for over 10-12 hours each day for four months to read out notes. Kapasi has an exceptional academic track record. He has always scored above 80%. Haresh Kapasi, his civil engineer father, said, With the help of the National Association for the Blind, he continued to get interested readers and writers who helped him clear his education. In the last attempt in the CA exam, he did not take help from any reader as we helped him in his studies. Rushabh aims to get into teaching. In a few years he and his younger brother, who too is pursuing CA, can start their independent practice. My son wants people to take inspiration from him and we are willing to offer guidance to aspirants, said his father. Institute of Chartered Accountants of India officials were also helpful, he said. Arti, You can create and read values on Excel charts. You will find some information in screen help files. The problem with all of these is that you do not get a snse of the shape of the chart. Moreover, creating fancy charts with edit boxes require sight or the use of macros.
